What is GATE 2026?

GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. It is a national-level entrance exam conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore and seven IITs — Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, and Roorkee — on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE, Ministry of Education, Government of India.

GATE 2026 was organized by IIT Guwahati. The exam tests a candidate’s understanding of undergraduate subjects in engineering, technology, science, and architecture. A good GATE score opens doors to postgraduate admissions at IITs, IISc, NITs, and hundreds of other institutes across India. It is also used by more than 25 Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) for direct recruitment into their engineering and technical cadres.

More than 10 lakh candidates registered for GATE 2026 — the highest registration since 2014. The exam was held across 30 test papers in 235 cities in India. GATE 2026 introduced a new optional paper, Energy Science (XE-I), under the Engineering Sciences umbrella. From GATE 2026 onward, there are no international exam centres — all candidates must appear in India.

The GATE score is valid for 3 years from the date of result announcement. GATE 2026 scores are valid until March 2029, meaning candidates who qualified can use their score for PSU recruitment and M.Tech admissions through 2029.

GATE 2026 Result and Score

IIT Guwahati declared the GATE 2026 result on March 19, 2026. You can check your result and download your scorecard from the official portal by logging in with your Enrollment ID and password. The result is now available for all 30 test papers.

Your result shows two distinct values — marks out of 100 and a GATE score out of 1000. These are different. The marks are your raw or normalized performance on the paper. The GATE score is a standardized value used across all institutes and PSUs for shortlisting. Only the GATE score matters for admissions and recruitment.

How is the GATE Score Calculated?

For papers conducted in multiple sessions — such as CS (split into CS-1 and CS-2) and CE (CE-1 and CE-2) — IIT Guwahati normalizes marks to account for difficulty differences between sessions. The normalized marks are then converted to a GATE score using an official formula:

  • A candidate scoring exactly at the qualifying cutoff (General category) receives a GATE Score of 350
  • A candidate scoring at the mean of the top 0.1% candidates receives a GATE Score of 900
  • Scores above 900 are possible for candidates who outperform the top 0.1% mean

For single-session papers, raw marks are used directly in the score formula. The score scale is always 0–1000.

What Your GATE 2026 Scorecard Shows

Detail on Scorecard Meaning
Marks Out of 100 Raw or normalized marks in the paper
GATE Score (Out of 1000) Standardized score used for admissions and PSU shortlisting
Qualifying Marks Category-wise cutoff for your paper
All India Rank (AIR) Your rank among all qualified candidates in your paper
Score Validity 3 years from result date — valid till March 2029

GATE 2026 Cutoff

IIT Guwahati published the official GATE 2026 qualifying cutoff marks along with the results on March 19, 2026. The qualifying cutoff is the minimum marks (out of 100) you need to receive a GATE scorecard. Candidates scoring below the cutoff do not get a scorecard.

The qualifying cutoff shown below is for receiving a GATE scorecard — not for IIT/NIT admissions. The actual admission cutoff at top institutes is far higher — typically 600–760 GATE score depending on the institute and program.

GATE 2026 Qualifying Cutoff Marks — Major Papers

Paper Code General / UR OBC-NCL / EWS SC / ST / PwD
Computer Science & IT CS 30.0 27.0 20.0
Electronics & Communication EC 26.4 23.7 17.5
Mechanical Engineering ME 25.2 22.6 16.7
Civil Engineering CE 28.7 25.8 19.1

2024 29.0 26.1 19.3
2023 28.0 25.2 18.7

The GATE CS qualifying cutoff has been rising gradually over four years. This reflects the growing number of CS paper candidates — from about 1.5 lakh in 2023 to significantly more in 2026 — which raises competition even at the qualifying level. The OBC-NCL cutoff is 90% of the General cutoff, and SC/ST/PwD cutoff is two-thirds of the General cutoff.

GATE 2026 PSU Recruitment

Direct PSU recruitment is one of the most popular uses of a GATE score. More than 25 major Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) use GATE scores as the primary shortlisting tool for their Junior Engineer and Executive Engineer posts. This makes GATE a direct route to a government sector engineering job — no separate exam needed.

Most PSUs shortlist candidates based on GATE score, then call shortlisted candidates for a Group Discussion (GD) and/or Personal Interview (PI). Each PSU releases its own recruitment notification separately — you should keep checking the individual PSU websites or apply when notified.

GATE 2026 applications were open from August 25 to October 13, 2025. A correction window ran from October 28 to November 10, 2025, allowing candidates to fix errors in name, paper choice, category, or uploaded documents.

GATE 2026 Exam Pattern

GATE 2026 followed the same exam pattern as the past several years — 65 questions, 100 marks, 3 hours, in CBT mode. Here are the complete details:

Parameter Details
Mode Computer-Based Test (CBT), English medium only
Duration 3 hours (180 minutes) — no sectional time limit
Total Questions 65
Total Marks 100
Question Types MCQ, MSQ, NAT
Mark Distribution Mix of 1-mark and 2-mark questions
General Aptitude Section 10 questions — 5 × 1 mark + 5 × 2 marks = 15 marks
Engineering Mathematics (selected papers) 13 marks (CE, CS, EC, EE, ME, IN, and other core engineering papers)
Core Subject 72 marks (for papers with Engg. Math) or 85 marks (for pure science papers)

GATE 2026 added Energy Science (XE-I) as a new optional section under the Engineering Sciences (XE) paper. This is its first appearance in GATE. XE candidates can now choose from 8 optional sections (up from 7 in GATE 2025). The XE-I syllabus covers energy conversion principles, solar and wind energy, biomass and geothermal energy, energy storage systems, energy efficiency, and energy policy and economics.

GATE 2026 Preparation Tips

GATE rewards focused, structured preparation — not just hard work. Here are the most effective strategies for GATE 2027 aspirants:

1. Start With the Official Syllabus — Not a Coaching Module

Download the official GATE syllabus for your paper from the IIT website. Read through it before you open any textbook. The syllabus defines the exact scope — do not waste time on topics not listed in it.

2. Focus First on High-Weightage Topics

Every GATE paper has a few subjects carrying 15–25% of total marks. For CS, that is Algorithms + Data Structures, OS, and DBMS. For ME, that is Manufacturing and Thermodynamics. For EE, it is Electrical Machines and Power Electronics. Clear these first — they alone can take you past the qualifying cutoff.

3. Solve Previous Year GATE Questions — Minimum 10 Years

Solving previous year GATE questions (PYQs) is the single most effective preparation strategy. GATE questions repeat in style, approach, and even concept. After studying a topic from a textbook, immediately solve all GATE PYQs from that topic. This tunes your preparation to GATE’s actual difficulty and style.

4. Do Not Skip Engineering Mathematics or General Aptitude

Engineering Mathematics gives 13 marks in most core engineering papers. General Aptitude gives 15 marks across all papers. These 28 marks are more achievable than core-subject marks at the same level. A candidate who scores full marks in GA and Engineering Mathematics and is average in core subject can still comfortably qualify. Prepare both seriously — do not treat them as afterthoughts.

5. Take Full-Length Mock Tests Under Exam Conditions

GATE is 3 hours for 65 questions. Time management under pressure decides whether you score 40 or 55 out of 100. Start full-length mock tests at least 8–10 weeks before the exam. Do not pause during the mock — simulate the actual exam environment. Review every wrong answer in detail after each test.

6. Be Careful With MCQ Guesses — Use NAT and MSQ Freely

MCQs carry negative marking (−1/3 for 1 mark, −2/3 for 2 marks). Only attempt an MCQ if you can eliminate at least 2 options. NAT (numerical type) and MSQ questions carry no negative marks — attempt all of them even if you are not fully sure.
