Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) are government-owned entities where the government owns a majority stake. Some of the PSUs use the GATE scores to recruit candidates for various executive posts.

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level examination that assesses candidates' understanding in various undergraduate-level subjects such as Engineering, Technology, and Architecture, etc., for admission to various Master’s and Doctoral Programs.

Based on GATE 2026 scores, many PSUs will be recruiting candidates to various posts based on a certain selection process and eligibility criteria. Recently, NPCIL has announced the use of GATE 2026 scores to recruit candidates.

GATE 2026: Role in PSU’s Recruitment

The GATE is organised annually by one of the IITs or the IISc. This year, IIT Guwahati is organising GATE. Apart from admissions to Master’s and Doctoral Programs, GATE scores are used by some PSUs for the recruitment of candidates for executive posts.

  • Low-tier PSUs or reserved categories require lower cutoffs of around 500-600 GATE scores.

Ques. Is there any written test after GATE for PSU selection?

Ans. In most of the PSUs, there is no separate written test, and the shortlisting of candidates is based on the GATE scores.

Ques. Can I apply to multiple PSUs? Will conflicting interview dates be an issue?

Ans. Yes, candidates can apply to as many PSUs as they want, with the condition of fulfilling the eligibility criteria. The interview or group discussion dates may clash, but candidates should always prioritise the top choices. However, some PSUs may have flexible scheduling for the group discussions or personal interviews.

Ques. Is GATE preparation enough, or do I need extra preparation for group discussion or personal interview?

Ans. The GATE preparation will cover the shortlisting for the group discussion and personal interview. However, the GD and PI will require separate preparation, such as PSU-specific information, communication, and discussion on topics like renewable energy, etc.

Mock interviews can help candidates to improve their communication skills. Current affairs and reading newspapers can also improve your thinking skills, which will be helpful for group discussions.
