PSU Recruitment through GATE 2026: Jobs, Eligibility, Selection Process

Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) are government-owned entities where the government owns a majority stake. Some of the PSUs use the GATE scores to recruit candidates for various executive posts.

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level examination that assesses candidates' understanding in various undergraduate-level subjects such as Engineering, Technology, and Architecture, etc., for admission to various Master’s and Doctoral Programs.

Based on GATE 2026 scores, many PSUs will be recruiting candidates to various posts based on a certain selection process and eligibility criteria. Recently, NPCIL has announced the use of GATE 2026 scores to recruit candidates.

In 2025, Many PSUs, such as Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL), Engineers India Limited (EIL), Airports Authority of India (AAI), Engineers India Limited etc, had used GATE 2025 scores for recruitment.

• Tier 1 PSUs such as ONGC, IOCL, NTPC, etc., required a very high score of around 800-900+.
• Tier 2 PSUs such as BHEL, NPCIL, EIL, HAL, etc., required a rank of around 500-1500.

Note: The PSUs use the GATE score and not the GATE marks for recruitment. The GATE marks are normalized to get GATE scores.

What are PSUs?

Public sector undertakings are companies owned by the union government or the state government with a majority stake of 51% or more. The PSUs are divided into various categories based on their net worth, profit, and turnover.

PSUs operate in critical areas like defense, energy, mining, and telecommunications, and they contribute significantly to GDP, employ a large workforce, and develop infrastructure.

Types of PSUs: Maharatna, Navratna, and Miniratna.

GATE 2026: Role in PSU’s Recruitment

The GATE is organised annually by one of the IITs or the IISc. This year, IIT Guwahati is organising GATE. Apart from admissions to Master’s and Doctoral Programs, GATE scores are used by some PSUs for the recruitment of candidates for executive posts.

Every PSU follows a separate recruitment process with different eligibility criteria as per their requirements. The GATE scores filter out the candidates for this recruitment process. This ensures merit-based selection, which promotes transparency and proficiency in these renowned institutions.

The GATE scores are valid for three years, but for PSU recruitment, the candidates must apply within the recruitment cycle following the exam results.

PSU Recruitment: Important Dates

As the recruitment process will be conducted based on the GATE scores, the dates regarding the GATE 2026 exam are crucial. Given below are the important dates for GATE 2026 and the expected dates for the recruitment process for various PSUs.

PSU Recruitment through GATE 2026

The PSU recruitment using GATE scores provides a way to filter out candidates, as there is no centralized system for their recruitment.

The GATE aspirants apply for PSU recruitment due to various reasons given below:

• GATE scores cannot be manipulated, and the shortlisting through GATE scores is anticipated, to be honest.
• The job provides stability with good pay and additional perks.
• There are various additional benefits, such as healthcare facilities, HRA, foreign trips, and extended leaves.

Eligibility Criteria

The most crucial criterion required in PSU recruitment through GATE is a valid GATE score in relevant disciplines. Apart from this, there are other factors considered during the selection of candidates:

• Age limit
• Minimum Pass percentage or CGPA in a Bachelor’s degree
• Medical Standards

The eligibility criteria vary with PSUs for their recruitment process as per their requirements. However, to be eligible for PSU recruitment, each candidate must have qualified for GATE 2026.

How to apply?

There are differences in the procedures used to recruit candidates by PSUs. Some of the PSUs recruit candidates solely based on their GATE score.

Other PSUs first shortlist the candidates based on their GATE score and then conduct an entrance exam, followed by a personal interview.

Most of the PSUs prefer the online mode of application for recruitment. In case of an offline application, candidates have to fill it out and send it with the required documents.

• For online mode, candidates have to register online, upload the documents required, and submit the application form.
• Some of the PSUs may charge an application fee, to be paid either online or offline.
• To fill out the form, GATE details of the candidates, such as registration number and scores, are important.
• The application for PSU recruitments based on the GATE score 2026 will usually be announced after the declaration of the GATE 2026 results.

NPCIL Recruitment through GATE 2026

NPCIL is a PSU under the administrative control of the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, having capabilities in all facets of Nuclear Technology, such as siting of NPPs, design, construction, and maintenance of nuclear reactors in India.

NPCIL is recruiting engineering graduates as Executive trainees in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, and Civil Disciplines based on the GATE 2026 scores. Candidates will be shortlisted for an interview based on the GATE 2026 scores.

NALCO Recruitment through GATE 2025

Recently, NALCO announced on its official website to recruit Graduate Engineer Trainees (GETs) through GATE 2025 scores.

NTPC Recruitment through GATE 2025

NTPC is an Indian government-owned company. It generates and sells electricity to the state-owned power distribution companies. It has even ventured out into oil and gas corporations.

NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) hires Engineering Executive Trainees (ET) on the basis of GATE Scodisciplines re. NTPC will announce the recruitment of GATE-qualified candidates in fields such as Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics, Instrumentation, and Mining Engineering.

IOCL Recruitment through GATE 2025

Indian Oil Corporation is a commercial oil company in the country. It is held accountable for half of India’s petroleum products. The PSU has ventured into the globalization of downstream operations and alternative energy.

Indian Oil Corporation Limited recruits Engineers/ Officers/ Assistant Officers (Quality Control) based on GATE score. IOCL has stated that Indian Citizens who have graduated in engineering disciplines, i.e., Civil, Chemical, Electrical, and Mechanical, will be eligible to apply through the GATE.

IOCL Recruitment through GATE 2025: Eligibility Criteria and Application Process

• Candidate must be an Indian Citizen.
• A graduate degree in Chemical Engineering/ Civil Engineering/ Electrical Engineering/Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university.
• The candidates in the range of 18- 24 years can only apply.

IOCL Recruitment through GATE 2025: Selection Process

Based on the GATE score, the candidates will be shortlisted for a further selection process comprising:

• A written test.
• The candidates need to secure at least 40% in the test.
• There is a relaxation of 5% for the reserved categories.

BARC Recruitment through GATE 2025

BARC is a multi-disciplinary research center. It conducts extensive research in nuclear science, chemical engineering, material sciences & metallurgy, electronic instrumentation, biology and medicine, supercomputing, high-energy physics, and Plasma physics, and associated research for the Indian nuclear programme and related areas.

Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) recruits candidates for the post of Trainee Scientist Officer based on GATE scores. It offers two training programs for selected candidates, i.e., OCES & DGFS.

BARC Recruitment through GATE 2025: Eligibility Criteria and Application Process

• Candidates having M.Sc. (by research) or Ph.D. are not eligible.
• A minimum of 60% marks is required in the qualifying degree.
• The candidates, belonging to the general category, who are at least 26 years of age, are eligible to apply.

BARC Recruitment through GATE 2025: Selection Process

• Candidates will be shortlisted based on their performance in the GATE and BARC Online test.

BHEL Recruitment through GATE 2025

BHEL is the largest manufacturing company of its kind based in India. It produces a variety of electrical, electronic, and mechanical equipment for various sectors. It designs and manufactures a wide range of products for the vital sectors of the economy.

Bharat Heavy Electronics Limited (BHEL) hires Engineer Trainee through the GATE score. BHEL Recruitment through GATE is only for the graduates or postgraduates of the Mechanical and Electrical branches.

BHEL Recruitment through GATE 2025: Eligibility Criteria and Application Process

• Candidates must have passed a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or a 5-year integrated Master’s Degree/ Dual degree program in engineering or technology from a recognized Indian university or institute.

• Physically challenged candidates will be given relaxation in cut off marks in the concerned categories for the interview.

ONGC recruitment through GATE

ONGC is an Indian government-owned crude oil and natural gas corporation. The company has the largest oil and natural gas production in India. The company makes considerable efforts to transform the country’s limited upstream sector into a practical field.

ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited) selects candidates through GATE 2025 for the post of Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE), Geologist, Chemist, Geophysicist, Material Management Officer, Programming Officer, and Transport Officer.

The only prerequisite is that the candidates have to pay a registration fee and upload their photograph and signature along with the application form. The selection will be based on GATE Score, personal interview, and qualification record.

ONGC Eligibility Criteria and Application Process

• Candidates applying for the recruitment process must be citizens of India.
• Candidates must hold an undergraduate engineering degree with a minimum of 60% marks in order to be eligible for the post.
• The candidates belonging to the general category need to be at least 30 years old to be eligible.
• The candidates can apply for the PSU through online applications.

• The application fee for General & OBC Category candidates is INR 370, while SC, ST & PwD candidates are not required to pay any fee.
