GATE scores are calculated based on the marks obtained by candidates in the exam. For papers conducted in a single exam shift, the candidate’s raw or actual marks (out of 100) are used. However, in the case of multi-session papers, GATE raw marks are converted to normalized marks using the score normalization process and these normalized marks are eventually used to calculate GATE scores. Check GATE score calculation
Note that GATE score validity is 3 years, i.e. you can use this score for M.Tech admission till 2026-27. Also, if you have previous valid GATE scorecards of 2023 and 2022, you can use the best of the three for admissions this year. Only those meeting the minimum cut off marks are eligible for participating in the admission process. Based on GATE scores, candidates can secure M.Tech admission to IIT & NIT and recruitment in PSUs like BHEL, NTPC, IOCL, ONGC, etc.

GATE Score Calculation and Normalization
GATE score is calculated based on the actual raw marks for single session papers and based on the normalized marks for multiple session papers. This year, only 2 papers have been conducted in 2 shifts- CS (Computer Science Engineering) and Civil Engineering (CE). Now, to account for the differences in difficulty level across the shifts, the raw scores are first normalized and then GATE score is calculated based on the resultant normalized marks. The formula used to calculate GATE normalized marks for multiple shift papers is provided below:
Now, the GATE score out of 1000 for all students is computed using the below-mentioned formula:
What is the difference between GATE Score and GATE Marks?
GATE marks refer to the actual raw marks obtained out of 100 as per the exam marking scheme. On the other hand, GATE scores are represented out of 1000 based on the qualifying marks. Given below is the GATE score vs marks analysis of AIR 1 based on previous year GATE results.

Ques. Will GATE score card be issued to a student who has not qualified the examination?
Ans. No, GATE scorecards will be issued to only the qualified students. However, the result will be displayed for all students irrespective of whether they meet the minimum qualifying cut off marks or not.
Ques. What is GATE score?
Ans. GATE score is the marks obtained by the candidates out of 1000. These scores are the marks computed based on the qualifying marks and the raw (for single session paper) or normalized marks (for multi-session paper) obtained in the exam.
Ques. How to calculate GATE scores?
Ans. GATE scores are calculated using a special formula which is based on the actual marks obtained in single single-session paper or normalized marks obtained in a multi-session paper and the qualifying marks for GATE 2025 exam. Ques. Is 25 a good score in GATE 2025?
Ans. According to the information brochure for IISc GATE 2025 Result, the minimum qualifying marks for every subject is 25 (out of 100). However, based on the number of candidates who appeared for the exam and have qualified, these qualifying cutoff marks could change. Based on previous year trends, usually 6-7 lakh candidates apply for GATE exam, of these only 15% candidates can qualify the exam. This means that only 15% students can achieve 25 and above marks.
