Ques. What is the minimum GATE score to get into IIT?
Ans. It is not possible to give a single minimum GATE score for IITs since it significantly depends on the specific institute, the area of study, and the candidate's category. In the case of leading IITs and sought-after streams such as Computer Science, the general category cutoffs may be very high, frequently crossing 700 or 750. However, a score in the range of 500 to 650 can be enough for acceptance in less competitive branches or newer IITs.
Ques. What is the rank for 70 marks in GATE?
Ans. The GATE test is scored with 1000 as the highest mark. The score of 70 can be ranked from about 200 to 5000, but this differs a lot depending upon the branch and the year, with Civil being an example, with 200–1000, and another analysis where 2000–5000 for a 70-75 mark range. Difficulty level of the exam and the branch's competition are the main factors that impact the final rank.
Ques: Can I get IIT with 40 marks in GATE?
Ans: A GATE score of 500-600 (around 40 marks) will allow you to get admission in some IITs, but not the premier IITs such as IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, or IIT Madras.
Getting admission to an IIT with 40 marks in GATE depends on numerous variables, including the paper, category, and competition level. As GATE is held out of 100 marks, raw scores are normalised to a GATE Score (out of 1000) for ranking and admissions.

FAQs
Ques. Is it possible to get into IIT Tirupati just by the GATE qualifying marks?
Ans: Yes, it is possible to get into IIT Tirupati with GATE 2026 results.
- IIT Tirupati is a very new IIT, established in 2015.
- It is not well known currently, especially in North India.
- It releases its applications quite early.
- It's MS and Phd. Batches started only a few years ago, so those with better scores will prefer NITs over IIT Tirupati.
- The cutoff for MS is also low in IIT Madras because very few students are interested in pursuing the course.
Ques. How to get admission in MTech through GATE?
Ans. To get into an M.Tech program through the GATE exam, you need to
- Sign up on the COAP portal for IITs
- Sign up on CCMT portal for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
Once you have registered and have your COAP/CCMT ID, you’ll then need to apply separately to each IIT and NIT through their individual websites, where you'll provide your GATE details and your preferred branches of study.
Ques. What is a good GATE rank for IIT?
Ans. For the M.Tech program at an IIT, a GATE rank of around 200 is typically the threshold for admission. A GATE rank in the range of 600-800 can still be considered as a good chance. Some branches like Computer Science and Electrical Engineering often need very high ranks that are much above for the others.
Ques. Can I join MTech without GATE in IIT?
Ans. Yes, there are certain IITs where one can obtain an M.Tech degree without a GATE score. These seats include:
- Sponsoring seats for working professionals
- A self-sponsoring category
- Direct admission for a high CGPA.
Some IITs also provide admission based on the Quality Improvement Programme (QIP).
