GATE 2025 Response Sheet to Marks

The GATE 2025 Response Sheet is anticipated to be released by IIT Roorkee on 21st February 2025, approximately 5–10 days after the completion of the examination. The GATE Response Sheet is a document provided by the GATE exam authority that contains the answers marked by the candidate during the exam. By comparing the response sheet with the official answer key, candidates can estimate their scores.

Calculating Estimated Marks:

  1. Obtain the Official Answer Key: Download the official GATE answer key from the conducting body's website.
  2. Compare Responses: Match your responses with the correct answers in the answer key.
  3. Apply the Marking Scheme: GATE employs specific marking schemes:

Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs):

  • 1-mark questions: Correct answer = +1 mark; Incorrect answer = -1/3 mark
  • 2-mark questions: Correct answer = +2 marks; Incorrect answer = -2/3 mark

Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions:

  • No negative marking
  1. Calculate Total Marks: Sum the marks for all correct answers and subtract the penalties for incorrect answers.

Gate Response Sheet to Marks Calculation

Suppose a candidate answers 50 questions:

  • 30 MCQs: 20 correct and 10 incorrect
    • Correct answers: 20 × 1 = 20 marks
    • Incorrect answers: 10 × (1/3) = 3.33 marks deducted
  • 20 NAT Questions: 15 correct and 5 incorrect
    • Correct answers: 15 × 2 = 30 marks
    • Incorrect answers: No deduction

Total Marks = 20 + 30 - 3.33 = 46.67 marks

Type of Question Correct Answers Marks per Correct Answer Marks for Correct Answers Incorrect Answers Marks per Incorrect Answer Marks Deducted for Incorrect Answers
MCQs (1-mark questions) 20 1 20 10 -1/3 3.33
NAT (2-mark questions) 15 2 30 5 No deduction 0
Total 35 50 15 -3.33
Final Score 46.67

GATE Cutoff Marks for IIT and NIT

The cutoff marks for IITs are usually higher than those of NITs because of the limited seats and the high level of competition. For example, streams such as CSE (Computer Science Engineering), EE (Electrical Engineering), and ME (Mechanical Engineering) usually have higher cutoffs, i.e., 85 to 90 for General category students in IITs, indicating the high demand.

On the other hand, NITs have slightly lower cutoffs, usually between 70 and 80 for General category students, although the range varies based on discipline.

Moreover, the cutoffs for OBC (NCL) students are typically 10% lower than General category students, while for SC/ST/PwD students, the cutoffs are approximately 50% of those for General category students.

GATE Cutoff Marks for IITs

Highly competitive courses like CSE, ME, and EE usually have cutoffs of 85-90 for General Category students, which is the large demand and limited seats in those courses. For OBC candidates, the cutoffs are normally around 10% less than that of the General Category candidates, whereas cutoffs for SC/ST/PwD candidates are normally around 50-60% of that of the General category cutoff.

As per the previous years’ trends the cutoffs for CSE and EE in IITs have always remained high because of their popularity and the fact that there are very few seats, and it is likely that these cutoffs will be in the higher range (above 85) for GATE 2025.

IIT GATE 2025 Cutoff Marks (Expected Range)

Discipline General Category OBC (NCL) SC/ST/PwD
Mechanical Engineering (ME) 85-90 75-80 60-65

Ques. Is it possible to get into IIT Tirupati just by the GATE qualifying marks?

Yes, it may be possible. Here are the reasons why- IIT Tirupati is a very new IIT, established in 2015. It is not well known currently, especially in North India.  It releases its applications quite early. Its MS and Phd. batches started only a few years ago, so those with better scores will prefer NITs over IIT Tirupati. The cutoff for MS is also low in IIT Madras because very few students are interested in pursuing the course. Ultimately, the number of applicants and the interview round will decide your fate. ...Read More

Ques. My son has scored 42.33 marks in GATE (CSE). Could you please suggest which IITs, NITs, or IIITs he might be eligible for an M.Tech in Computer Science?

With a GATE 2025 score of 42.33 marks in Computer Science, your son has comfortably crossed the General category qualifying cut-off mark of 29.2 marks and can be eligible for admission into a number of top institutes in India. Here is a quick analysis of where he stands and the options that actually confront him: Admission Possibilities Institute Type Chance for Admission in CSE Top IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, etc.) Unlikely, as cutoffs are usually 55–65+ marks Newer IITs (Jodhpur, Patna, Dhanbad, etc.) Possible in later rounds or for allied CSE branches Top NITs (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal) Competitive, but admission more likely in later rounds or for specializations like information security and data science. Mid/Lower NITs Good chance for direct admission in CSE Top IIITs (Allahabad, Gwalior, Jabalpur) Competitive; possible depending on the round and specialization Other IIITs Good chances for CSE or related programs Recommendations: Apply through COAP (for IITs) and CCMT (for NITs/IIITs). Keep looking for related fields like Data Science, Cybersecurity, or Information Technology, which may have slightly lower cutoffs. And take all rounds of counseling, including spot rounds, as cutoff trends fluctuate every year. Also visit state universities and centrally funded colleges that accept GATE scores. Your son is rightly positioned for M.Tech admissions in all NITs, IIITs, and new IITs. CSE and this score will not make the top 5 IITs feasible, but there are plenty of good colleges where he can build a strong academic and professional life. Wishing your son best of luck for future admissions....Read More
