GATE 2027 Scholarship: Stipend ₹12,400 Per Month, Government Schemes and PMRF Fellowship

MHRD Post Graduate Scholarship (GATE Stipend)

The Ministry of Education (formerly MHRD) Post Graduate Scholarship is the most widely accessed financial benefit for GATE qualifiers. GATE-qualified students admitted to full-time M.Tech, M.E., M.Arch., or M.Pharma programmes at IITs, NITs, IISc, and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs) receive a monthly stipend of ₹12,400. The stipend was enhanced from ₹8,000/month following a Pay Commission revision and has remained at ₹12,400 since 2016. Note: there is a pending Ministry of Education proposal to revise this to ₹18,600/month, but as of the publication of this article (August 2026), the enhancement has not been officially notified — GATE 2027 students should treat ₹12,400 as the confirmed current amount and monitor official updates before joining programmes in 2027.

Eligibility Conditions:

• You must hold a valid GATE score at the time of admission — GATE qualification after joining a programme does not make you eligible retroactively.
• You must be admitted to a full-time M.Tech, M.E., M.Arch., or M.Pharma programme at an IIT, NIT, IISc, or other CFTI.
• You must NOT be employed in any government or private organisation during the tenure of the scholarship.
• Part-time students, management-quota admissions, and students admitted without a valid GATE score are not eligible.
• You must maintain satisfactory academic progress — most institutes set a minimum CGPA of 6.0 to 6.5 on a 10-point scale — for semester-by-semester renewal.
• Students in receipt of any other government stipend or fellowship cannot draw the GATE stipend simultaneously.

• There is no separate application portal for the MHRD stipend. Admission through CCMT or direct IIT/NIT processes automatically qualifies you, provided you have a valid GATE score on record.
• After joining, submit the stipend activation form (TA/Stipend Claim Form) to your department’s academic section within the first 30 days of the semester.
• Stipend disbursement begins typically from the second month of the first semester, after enrolment is verified.
• Renewal is semester-based — your department submits a continuation certificate after each semester’s result.

Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF)

The Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship is the most lucrative and prestigious doctoral fellowship for engineering and science students in India. GATE qualifiers admitted to PhD programmes at IITs, IISc, IISERs, and NIT-Trichy may apply for the PMRF, which pays between ₹70,000 and ₹80,000 per month depending on the year of their PhD, plus a ₹2 lakh annual research grant. The minimum GATE score requirement for PMRF was revised from 750 to 600, broadening eligibility for GATE 2027 qualifiers significantly. The fellowship is managed by IIT Kharagpur as the national coordinating institute, under the Ministry of Education. The PMRF 2027 first selection cycle is tentatively expected to open in December 2026, with a second cycle around May 2027.

Eligibility Conditions:

• You must have a valid GATE score of 600 or above in the discipline relevant to your PhD programme (the score requirement was recently revised downward from 750).
• You must hold a B.Tech/M.Tech/Dual Degree with a minimum CGPA of 8.0 on a 10-point scale (or equivalent).
• You must have secured or be in the process of securing admission to a full-time PhD programme at a PMRF-recognised institute: IITs, IISc, IISERs, NIT-Trichy, and select central universities.
• You must be within the first year of PhD enrolment (some cohorts extend lateral-entry eligibility to within 2 years of joining).
• You must NOT be receiving any other government fellowship or stipend (GATE stipend, CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF, etc.) at the time of PMRF award.
• Candidates with BTech from NIRF top-25 institutes may apply through a direct-entry route without a GATE score requirement, but GATE remains the primary route for most applicants.

The PMRF fellowship is substantially higher than the standard PhD research assistantship at IITs (₹31,000–₹35,000/month) — the ₹70,000–₹80,000 slab represents roughly 2–2.5× the standard rate, designed to match comparable doctoral compensation globally.

AICTE Post Graduate Scholarship

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) Post Graduate Scholarship extends the government’s GATE stipend policy to students who qualify GATE but join M.Tech programmes at AICTE-approved colleges that are not Centrally Funded Technical Institutions. This scheme ensures parity — if you qualify GATE and join an AICTE-approved, non-CFTI institution, you still receive the same ₹12,400/month that IIT and NIT students receive under the MHRD scheme. A student cannot receive both the MHRD and AICTE scholarships simultaneously — the two are mutually exclusive based on the type of institution you attend.

Eligibility Conditions:

• You must have a valid GATE score from the year of admission (GATE 2027 for the 2027–28 academic session).
• You must be admitted to a full-time M.Tech or M.E. programme at an AICTE-approved institution that is NOT a CFTI (IIT, NIT, IISc).
• Part-time students, students admitted under management quota, and distance-mode learners are not eligible.
• You must NOT be employed or in receipt of any other government stipend or scholarship during the award period.
• Academic performance (passing all semester examinations) is required for semester-wise renewal.

SC/ST and PwD Category Scholarships

Students from Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Persons with Disability (PwD) categories who qualify GATE 2027 are eligible for additional government scholarship schemes that run parallel to — and do not replace — the standard GATE stipend. Crucially, SC/ST category NSP scholarships are sourced from different government ministries than the MHRD/AICTE stipend, so you can receive both simultaneously — provided you apply for each separately and meet the income and enrolment conditions. GATE 2027 also gives direct cost savings: SC/ST and PwD applicants pay a reduced exam fee of ₹900 versus ₹1,800 for general category students.

Post-Matric Scholarship for SC Students (NSP — Ministry of Social Justice):

• Covers tuition fees and non-refundable charges for SC students in recognised postgraduate technical programmes.
• Maintenance allowance: ₹820 per month for hostellers and ₹530 per month for day scholars at the postgraduate level.
• For students in private institutions, tuition reimbursement is capped at ₹2 lakh per year.
• Income ceiling: family income must not exceed ₹2.5 lakh per annum for full benefits.

DST-INSPIRE Fellowship

The Department of Science and Technology’s INSPIRE (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) Programme offers a doctoral fellowship for students working in Natural and Applied Sciences at the interface of science and engineering. GATE qualifiers in the top percentile of science-adjacent engineering disciplines (such as Engineering Sciences, Environmental Science, or Physics-based specialisations) who pursue PhD programmes at IITs, IISc, IISERs, and national institutes may apply for the INSPIRE Fellowship. Unlike PMRF — which is exclusively managed by the Ministry of Education — INSPIRE is awarded by DST and covers a broader disciplinary spectrum, making it relevant for students whose research straddles science and technology.

Eligibility Conditions:

• You must be enrolled full-time in a PhD programme in Natural or Applied Sciences at a recognised Indian university or research institution.
• A top-1% performance in a qualifying examination (GATE qualifiers in the top percentile of their paper typically satisfy this criterion).
• Your research area must align with DST’s priority science and technology domains.
• Age limit: below 32 years at the time of application (relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST/PwD/women candidates).
• You must NOT be receiving any other DST fellowship, national fellowship, or full government stipend concurrently.

Teaching Assistantships (TA) and Research Assistantships (RA) are the two most common institute-funded positions — both carry stipend levels equivalent to or higher than the standard MHRD GATE stipend. These positions are awarded by departments based on availability and your academic or research profile at the time of admission. You cannot draw the MHRD stipend and an institute TA stipend simultaneously — the TA or RA replaces the government stipend.

Teaching Assistantship (TA) at IITs:

• Available to GATE-qualified M.Tech and PhD students who assist faculty with undergraduate lab sessions, tutorials, problem sessions, or grading.
• Stipend: ₹12,400/month — the same rate as the MHRD stipend; this is the institute-funded equivalent, not an addition to it.

Research Assistantship (RA) at IITs and IISc:

• Funded from faculty research project grants (SERB, DST, industry-sponsored, international grants).
• Typical RA stipend for PhD students: ₹14,000–₹18,000 per month at most IITs, depending on the sponsoring agency and project level.
• Selected directly by faculty supervisors — not through a central portal; contact potential supervisors before admission to discuss RA availability.

IISc Junior / Senior Research Fellowship:

• IISc students in Integrated PhD and PhD programmes receive CSIR/UGC-aligned stipends: ₹31,000/month at JRF level (Years 1–2) and ₹35,000/month at SRF level (Year 3 onwards).
• GATE-qualified students admitted through IISc’s admissions process are automatically considered for these fellowships — no separate application is needed.

NIT Merit-cum-Means Scholarships:

• Some NITs offer merit-cum-means awards for top-ranked GATE-admitted M.Tech students that supplement the standard MHRD stipend.
• Amounts and eligibility criteria vary significantly by institution — contact your specific NIT’s postgraduate office after CCMT counselling for details.

PSU Recruitment and Financial Benefits through GATE

Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) use GATE scores to shortlist candidates for direct engineering-grade employment. While these are not scholarships, they represent one of the most significant financial outcomes of a good GATE score, particularly for students who wish to enter the workforce rather than pursue postgraduate studies. A strong GATE 2027 score can directly shortlist you for positions at PSUs like BHEL, ONGC, NTPC, IOCL, GAIL, and Power Grid Corporation, with starting packages typically ranging from ₹7 LPA to ₹13 LPA. PSU recruitment notifications are released independently by each organisation and are not managed by IIT Madras (the GATE 2027 organiser).

Key PSUs That Use GATE Score for Shortlisting:

GATE score is only the shortlisting criterion for PSUs — each PSU runs its own subsequent selection process including Group Discussion, Technical Interview, and Medical Examination before issuing an offer letter.
