GATE Qualifying Cut-off (2023 VS 2024)
The GATE qualifying cutoff refers to the minimum marks a candidate must secure to qualify for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).
The cutoff varies each year based on several factors such as:
- Difficulty level of the exam,
- Number of candidates appearing
- Overall performance of the candidates.
Comparing the cutoff scores from different years provides insights into trends and changes in the competitive landscape of the exam.
Now, let's compare the GATE qualifying cutoffs for 2023 and 2024.

Cut-off Trend for the Past Two Years :
- Courses like Computer Science and IT, Electronics & Communication, and Chemical Engineering have witnessed a hike in the cutoff marks. Possible reasons could include:
- High competition or interest in these fields.
- Better performance in the exam by a majority of the students.
- Variations in the difficulty level of the exam for these subjects
- Statistics, Physics, and Civil Engineering saw a decrease in cutoffs. This might indicate a reduction in the average performance or increased difficulty in the previous year's exams.
- Engineering Sciences, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering showed only minor changes, suggesting stability in performance or difficulty.
- The comparison of GATE qualifying cut offs between 2023 and 2024 reveals both significant increases and decreases across various subjects. Understanding these changes involves exploring factors such as exam difficulty, student performance, syllabus adjustments, and external trends.
- Further research in these areas can provide valuable insights for future candidates and help in aligning preparation strategies effectively.
The following cut-off trends for the year 2025 could be predicted based on the comparison of GATE qualifying cut offs between 2023 and 2024:
Increased Cutoffs for High-Demand Fields Computer Science & IT, Electronics & Communication, and Chemical Engineering are likely to continue seeing increased cutoffs, driven by:
- Growing competition in tech-related fields and the rising demand for professionals in these areas.
- Advancements in digital transformation, data science, and AI, leading to more candidates opting for these disciplines.
- Students become better prepared due to increased access to quality learning resources and coaching.
Any changes in the GATE syllabus or structure for 2025 could influence cutoff trends, especially if newer topics or more difficult concepts are introduced. Next year's GATE cutoff trends may continue to reflect growing competition in technology-driven fields, while traditional engineering disciplines could remain stable. Predicting these trends can help candidates better prepare and focus their efforts on areas with anticipated changes, aligning their strategies with evolving industry demands and exam patterns

GATE 2025 Marks vs Rank
GATE 2025 Marks vs Rank Analysis helps candidates know their expected ranks based on the scores in respective papers. The table below covers the Marks vs Rank analysis for top branches of GATE 2024 including Mechanical Engineering (ME), Computer Science Engineerig (CS), Civil Engineering (CE), Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC) and Electrical Engineering (EE).
Rank | Marks in GATE Exam | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
ME | CS | CE | EC | EE | |
1-10 | 92+ | 80+ | 90+ | 73+ | 91+ |
10-50 | 87-92 | 75-80 | 85-90 | 67-73 | 87-91 |
50-100 | 85-87 | 72-75 | 78-85 | 63-67 | 84-87 |
100-200 | 82-85 | 68-72 | 74-78 | 60-63 | 81-84 |
200-500 | 79-82 | 62-68 | 70-74 | 56-60 | 77-81 |
500-1000 | 75-79 | 56-62 | 64-70 | 50-56 | 72-77 |
1000-2000 | 71-75 | 50-56 | 57-64 | 45-50 | 66-72 |
2000-5000 | 63-71 | 40-50 | 50-57 | 38-45 | 57-66 |
5000-10000 | 51-63 | 32-40 | 40-50 | 28-38 | 46-57 |
Aspirants must not get confused between GATE rank and score. Suppose a student who gets marks around 67 and GATE score around 810 is likely to get rank near 170 in Electronics and Communication Engineering. Similarly, a candidate expecting the rank under 1000 has good chances of getting into a preferred branch in NITs. Although, a student must prepare for an interview and GD in order to proceed in the admission process.
GATE Rank Vs Institute
While cut off marks may vary each year, the rank required for selection in a particular college and course is almost the same because seats for a particular course do not change on a regular basis. Thus, it is advisable to score an AIR rank around 100 in GATE 2024 in order to get admission into IISc and Top IITs.
Name of the Institute(s) | Required GATE Rank |
---|---|
Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay | (1) For Direct Admission: AIR < 100 (2) For some courses: ≤ AIR ≤ 600 |
Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi Indian Institute of Technology, Madras | (1) For Direct Admission: AIR < 100 (2) For some courses: ≤ AIR ≤ 300 |
Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur | AIR ≤ 600 |
Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati Indian Institute of Technology, BHU | AIR ≤ 1000 |
National Institute of Technologies Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad Indian Institute of Technology, Patna, etc | AIR ≤ 1500 |
Government Engineering Colleges (National & State level) | AIR ≤ 2500 |
Private Engineering Colleges (National & State level) | AIR ≥ 2500 |
