What is CLAT 2026?

CLAT 2026 is the Common Law Admission Test, a national-level entrance exam for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate law programmes. The Consortium of National Law Universities conducts the exam once a year. You can use the CLAT score to get admission into 24 National Law Universities in India.

The exam is held for two courses. The UG exam is for the 5-year integrated LLB programme after Class 12. The PG exam is for the one-year LLM programme after a law degree. CLAT is one of the most competitive law entrance exams in the country.

A record 92,344 candidates registered for CLAT 2026, the highest ever. They competed for more than 3,400 UG seats and over 1,300 PG seats across the NLUs. This makes it one of India’s top law entrance examinations. Many private and self-financed law colleges also accept the CLAT score for admission.

A law degree from an NLU is highly valued in India. After the 5-year LLB, you can work as an advocate, join a law firm, become a corporate counsel, or sit for the judiciary exams. Many students also use the degree for careers in policy, civil services and academics. This wide scope is one big reason why CLAT is so popular.

The CLAT 2026 exam was held on 7 December 2025 in offline mode. The result came out on 16 December 2025. After five rounds of counselling, the final admission window closed on 30 May 2026. So the CLAT 2026 cycle is now complete.

CLAT 2026 Eligibility Criteria

The CLAT 2026 eligibility criteria are set by the Consortium of NLUs. The rules are different for the UG and PG courses. You should check the eligibility before applying so that your form is not rejected.

CLAT 2026 UG Eligibility:

  • You must have passed Class 12 or an equivalent exam from a recognised board.
  • General, OBC and other category candidates need at least 45% marks.
  • SC, ST and PwD candidates need at least 40% marks.
  • Students appearing in the Class 12 exam in 2026 can also apply.
  • There is no upper age limit for CLAT 2026.

CLAT 2026 PG Eligibility:

  • There is no minimum or maximum number of attempts for CLAT.
  • NRI and NRI-sponsored candidates can also apply under the special seats offered by some NLUs.
  • The marks requirement is checked at the time of admission, not just at the form stage.

There is no upper age limit to appear for CLAT. Candidates of any age who meet the marks requirement can apply.

CLAT 2026 Application Process

The CLAT 2026 application process was fully online on the official website. The registration window was open from 1 August 2025 to 7 November 2025. The application process is closed now, but the steps remain the same every year.

You should complete each step carefully to avoid rejection. The CLAT registration is a multi-step process. Here are the main steps:

  • Registration: Sign up with your name, mobile number and email to create a login.
  • Form Filling: Enter your personal, academic and category details.
  • Document Upload: Upload your photo, signature, category certificate and other documents.
  • NLU Preferences: Choose your preferred NLUs in order of choice.
  • Fee Payment: Pay the application fee online to complete the form.

You need a few documents ready before you start the form. Keeping them scanned in advance saves time and avoids last-minute errors. The main documents are:

  • A recent passport-size photograph in the given size and format.
  • Your signature scanned in the correct size.
  • Category certificate (SC, ST, OBC) if you are applying under a reserved category.
  • PwD certificate and BPL certificate, if these apply to you.
  • A valid government photo ID such as Aadhaar.

You should keep a printout of the submitted form for your records. The fees should be paid online and will be non-refundable. Always use a working email and mobile number because all updates come there.

CLAT 2026 Application Fee

The CLAT 2026 application fee depends on your category. You can pay the fee online using a debit card, credit card, net banking or UPI. The fee is non-refundable once paid.

Category Application Fee
General / OBC / PwD / NRI Rs. 4,000
SC / ST / BPL Rs. 3,500

The cost of previous year question papers is extra if you want to buy them during the application. You should pay the fee before the deadline because late forms are not accepted.

CLAT 2026 Exam Pattern

The CLAT 2026 exam pattern was different for the UG and PG courses. Both papers were held in offline mode for 2 hours. The exam used objective-type questions with negative marking. You should understand the pattern well because it shapes your preparation.

CLAT 2026 UG Exam Pattern:

Particulars Details
Mode Offline (OMR based)
Duration 2 hours
Total Questions 120
Total Marks 120
Question Type Multiple choice (comprehension based)
Marking Scheme +1 for correct, -0.25 for wrong

The UG paper has five sections. All the questions are comprehension based, so you have to read passages and answer questions from them. The section-wise split is given below.

Section Approx. Questions Weightage
English Language 22 to 26 20%
Current Affairs including GK 28 to 32 25%
Legal Reasoning 28 to 32 25%
Logical Reasoning 22 to 26 20%
Quantitative Techniques 10 to 14 10%

Each UG section has its own focus. The English section uses passages of about 450 words, and you answer questions on meaning and inference. The Current Affairs section also gives a passage, followed by questions on news and static GK linked to it. In Legal Reasoning, you read a rule or principle and apply it to a new set of facts, so no prior law study is needed.

The Logical Reasoning section checks how you handle arguments and patterns. You find premises, conclusions and weak points in short passages. The Quantitative Techniques section gives data in the form of graphs or tables, and you solve Class 10 level maths from it.

CLAT 2026 PG Exam Pattern: The PG paper had 120 objective questions for 120 marks. It was based on the compulsory subjects of the LLB course. The marking scheme was the same, with +1 for correct and -0.25 for wrong answers.

The PG paper does not have a separate subjective part now. Earlier, the LLM exam had descriptive questions, but the format was changed to fully objective. So you should focus on accuracy and quick reading of legal text for the PG paper. The questions are often based on extracts from important judgments and bare acts.

CLAT 2026 Syllabus

The CLAT 2026 syllabus tests your reading, reasoning and awareness skills. The UG paper does not need any law knowledge in advance. Instead, it checks how well you read and apply information. Here is the section-wise syllabus for the UG exam.

  • English Language: Passage-based questions on comprehension, meaning, inference, vocabulary and summary.
  • Current Affairs including GK: News, events, arts, culture, international affairs and historical events of importance.
  • Legal Reasoning: Passages on legal matters, public policy and moral questions. You apply given rules to facts.
  • Logical Reasoning: Arguments, patterns, premises and conclusions, and analogies.
  • Quantitative Techniques: Class 10 level maths on ratios, percentages, graphs and basic algebra.

For the PG exam, the syllabus covers the main LLB subjects. These include Constitutional Law, Jurisprudence, Law of Contract, Torts, Criminal Law, International Law, Family Law and Intellectual Property Law. The focus is on these core subjects of the law degree.

The most scoring sections in the UG paper are Legal Reasoning and Current Affairs. Together they carry 50% of the marks. So you should give these sections extra attention during preparation.

CLAT 2026 Admit Card

The CLAT 2026 admit card was released on 22 November 2025, about two weeks before the exam. You could download it from the official website by logging in with your application number and password. The admit card is now over for the 2026 cycle.

The admit card carried important details. You should always check these before the exam day:

  • Your name, roll number and photograph.
  • The exam date, reporting time and shift.
  • The exam centre name and full address.
  • The exam day instructions and dress code.

Candidates had to carry a printed admit card with a valid photo ID to the exam centre. Entry was not allowed without the admit card.

CLAT 2026 Answer Key

The CLAT 2026 answer key was released in two stages. The Consortium first put out a provisional answer key on 10 December 2025. The final answer key came with the result on 16 December 2025. The answer key helped candidates check their answers and estimate their score.

The objection window is an important part of this stage. You should know how it worked:

  • The Consortium released the provisional answer key with the question paper and recorded responses.
  • Candidates could raise objections against any answer between 10 and 12 December 2025.
  • A fee of Rs. 1,000 was charged for each objection raised.
  • An expert panel reviewed all objections before the final answer key.
  • If an objection was correct, the answer was changed for all candidates and the fee was refunded.

You could calculate your expected marks using the final answer key. For each correct answer you add 1 mark, and for each wrong answer you subtract 0.25 marks. This gave a clear idea of the score before the rank was announced.

CLAT 2026 Result

The CLAT 2026 result was declared on 16 December 2025 on the official website. The Consortium released the result as a merit list along with the final answer key. You could check your score and rank by logging in to the candidate portal.

The result showed your total marks, sectional marks and your All India Rank. The rank is the most important part because seat allotment is based on it. Candidates with a better rank get the top NLUs first. Geetali topped CLAT 2026 with All India Rank 1 and a score of 112.75 out of 120, and was allotted NLSIU Bengaluru.

You can check the CLAT 2026 result with a few simple steps. The process is the same every year:

  • Go to the official website of the Consortium of NLUs.
  • Click on the CLAT 2026 result or login link.
  • Enter your application number and password.
  • Your scorecard with marks and rank will open on the screen.
  • Download and save the scorecard for counselling.

The Consortium also uses tie-breaking rules when two candidates get the same marks. In the UG exam, a higher mark in Legal Reasoning is considered first. If the tie remains, age and a computerised draw of lots are used. This makes sure each candidate gets a unique rank.

The CLAT result is used by all 24 participating NLUs and many other law colleges that accept the CLAT score for admission.

CLAT 2026 Marks vs Rank

The CLAT marks vs rank shows how your score links to your All India Rank. The top NLUs need a very high score. Even a small change in marks can shift your rank by many places because of tight competition at the top.

The table below gives an indicative marks vs rank range based on previous years’ trends. These are approximate figures, not the official CLAT 2026 data.

Marks (out of 120) Expected Rank Range
105 and above Top 100
95 to 105 100 to 500
85 to 95 500 to 1,500
75 to 85 1,500 to 3,000
65 to 75 3,000 to 6,000

The marks vs rank changes every year. It depends on the paper difficulty and the number of candidates. A tough paper lowers the score needed for a good rank.

A score of around 90 to 105 is usually seen as a good score for the top NLUs. The CLAT 2026 topper scored 112.75 out of 120, which shows the very high level at the top. To get NLSIU Bengaluru or NALSAR Hyderabad, you generally need a rank within the top few hundred.

CLAT 2026 Cutoff

The CLAT 2026 cutoff is the rank or marks needed to get a seat in a particular NLU. The cutoff is different for each NLU and each category. The top NLUs like NLSIU Bangalore and NALSAR Hyderabad have the highest cutoffs because of heavy competition.

The cutoff depends on a few factors every year:

  • The number of candidates who appear for the exam.
  • The difficulty level of the paper.
  • The number of seats available in each NLU.
  • The category and reservation of the candidate.

The table below shows the indicative general category closing ranks for some top NLUs, based on previous years’ trends. These are approximate figures and not the official CLAT 2026 cutoff.

NLU Indicative General Closing Rank
NLSIU Bangalore Around 100 to 150
NALSAR Hyderabad Around 150 to 250
WBNUJS Kolkata Around 250 to 450
NLU Jodhpur Around 400 to 700
GNLU Gandhinagar Around 600 to 900

The ranks above are indicative trends from earlier years. The actual cutoff changes every year based on the paper and competition.

The cutoff is also different for each category. The general category cutoff is the highest. The SC, ST, OBC and PwD cutoffs are lower because of reservation. So a reserved category candidate can get the same NLU at a lower rank than a general candidate.

You should not compare the cutoff of one NLU with another directly. A higher cutoff usually means more demand and better placements. The top three NLUs fill their general seats within a few hundred ranks, while newer NLUs accept ranks in the thousands.

CLAT 2026 Counselling Process

The CLAT 2026 counselling was a centralised online process run by the Consortium of NLUs. Seats were allotted across the 24 NLUs based on merit, your NLU preferences and your category. The counselling started after the result and ran in five rounds.

The final admission window closed on 30 May 2026, after the last fee payment deadline. So the CLAT 2026 counselling is now complete. The table below shows the round-wise schedule that was followed.

Counselling Stage Date Status
Counselling Registration 17 to 27 December 2025 (Over)
Round 1 (First Allotment) 7 January 2026 (Over)
Round 2 (Second Allotment) 22 January 2026 (Over)
Round 3 (Third Allotment) 25 February 2026 (Over)
Round 4 (Fourth Allotment) 9 May 2026 (Over)
Round 5 (Final Allotment) 20 May 2026 (Over)
Final Fee Payment Deadline 30 May 2026 (Over)

The counselling followed a clear set of steps in each round. Knowing these steps helps you understand how seats were given:

  • Candidates paid the counselling registration fee after the result.
  • They locked their NLU and course preferences in order of choice.
  • The Consortium released the seat allotment for each round based on merit.
  • Allotted candidates paid the confirmation fee to hold the seat.
  • Final document verification was done at the allotted NLU.

The counselling registration fee was Rs. 30,000 for general candidates and Rs. 20,000 for reserved candidates. A part of this fee was adjusted later against the admission fee. In each round, you could choose to freeze, float or exit. If you floated, you stayed in the process for a better seat in the next round.

The final admission window closed on 30 May 2026. No further counselling round is open for the CLAT 2026 cycle.

The Consortium conducts the counselling, but each NLU completes the final document verification and admission at the campus level.

Participating NLUs and Seats

A total of 24 National Law Universities accept the CLAT 2026 score for admission. Together they offer more than 3,400 UG seats and over 1,300 PG seats. NLU Delhi is the only National Law University that does not use CLAT; it conducts its own exam called AILET.

Some of the top NLUs that accept the CLAT score are:

  • NLSIU Bangalore: The oldest and most preferred NLU in India.
  • NALSAR Hyderabad: Known for its strong academics and placements.
  • WBNUJS Kolkata: A top choice for students in the east.
  • NLU Jodhpur: Popular for its management and law programmes.
  • GNLU Gandhinagar: One of the leading NLUs in the west.

Apart from the NLUs, many private and deemed law universities also accept the CLAT score. So the exam opens doors to a large number of law colleges across India.

CLAT 2026 Exam Centres

The CLAT 2026 exam was held across around 140 cities in India. This wide spread means most candidates get a centre close to their home town. You had to choose your preferred test cities while filling the application form.

The Consortium allotted the final centre based on your choices and seat availability. Some points you should know about the exam centres:

  • You could select multiple cities in order of preference during the application.
  • The exact centre and address were printed on the admit card.
  • The centre once allotted could not be changed later.
  • You had to reach the centre before the reporting time on exam day.

The big cities had many centres because of the high number of candidates. So you should always reach early to find your room and complete the entry checks without stress.

CLAT 2026 Preparation Tips

Good preparation is the key to a high CLAT score. The exam tests your speed, reading and reasoning. If you are going to appear for the next cycle, you should start early and follow a clear plan. Here are some useful tips.

  • Read daily: Read newspapers and editorials to improve reading speed and current affairs.
  • Focus on weightage: Give more time to Legal Reasoning and Current Affairs, as they carry 50% of the marks.
  • Practice passages: Solve comprehension passages because the whole UG paper is passage based.
  • Take mock tests: Attempt full-length mocks every week to build speed and accuracy.
  • Revise current affairs: Keep monthly notes of important news and events.
  • Manage time: Practice finishing 120 questions in 2 hours with proper time per section.

A study plan also needs the right material. You should pick a few good sources and stick to them instead of using too many books. Some useful resources are listed below.

Section What to Use
English Language Daily newspaper editorials and comprehension practice sets
Current Affairs and GK Monthly current affairs notes and a yearly GK compendium
Legal Reasoning CLAT-specific legal reasoning passage books
Logical Reasoning Reasoning practice books with critical reasoning sets
Quantitative Techniques Class 10 NCERT maths and data interpretation sets

Along with these, you should solve the previous year CLAT papers. They show the real level and style of the questions. Solving them under a timer is the best way to build exam-day speed.

CLAT Registration Trends

The number of CLAT registrations has been rising over the years. This shows the growing interest in law as a career. A record 92,344 candidates registered for CLAT 2026, the highest ever, with around 17% growth over the previous year.

Course Registered Appeared
CLAT UG 75,009 72,631
CLAT PG 17,335 16,026
Total 92,344 88,657

The high number of applicants makes the race for the top NLUs very tight. Geetali topped CLAT 2026 with All India Rank 1 and a score of 112.75 out of 120, which shows the level needed to lead the merit list. Even a small drop in marks can push your rank down by hundreds of places.

The rise in registrations means the competition keeps getting tougher each year. As the number of seats stays nearly the same, a higher score is needed to get a top NLU. So you should aim for a strong, well-rounded performance across all sections.
