GATE 2027 Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme

Each GATE 2027 paper carries 100 marks and is completed in 3 hours in CBT mode. The exam is conducted across multiple shifts in February. The overall structure is expected to remain the same as GATE 2026, based on previous year trends.

Component Details
Total Marks 100
Total Questions 65
Duration 3 hours
Question Types MCQ, MSQ, NAT
General Aptitude (GA) Section 10 questions — 15 marks (mandatory for all papers)
Subject-Specific Section 55 questions — 85 marks
Negative Marking — MCQ (1-mark) 1/3 mark deducted per wrong answer
Negative Marking — MCQ (2-mark) 2/3 mark deducted per wrong answer
Negative Marking — MSQ and NAT No negative marking

The General Aptitude section tests verbal ability, critical reasoning, and numerical ability and is identical in format across all 30 papers. Students should not neglect GA — it is 15 marks with no subject-specific difficulty and can improve the overall score significantly.

Changes in GATE 2027 Compared to GATE 2026

Each GATE cycle introduces the possibility of syllabus updates, revised paper-combination rules, or structural tweaks. The following table summarises what is confirmed and what is expected for GATE 2027, based on GATE 2026 trends:

Aspect GATE 2026 GATE 2027 (Expected)
Organising Institute Previous organising IIT IIT Madras
Official Portal Previous cycle’s portal gate.iitm.ac.in
Number of Test Papers 30 30 (expected unchanged)
Total Marks per Paper 100 100 (expected unchanged)
Exam Duration 3 hours 3 hours (expected unchanged)
GA Section Weightage 15 marks 15 marks (expected unchanged)
DA Paper (Data Science and AI) Active (introduced GATE 2024) Active and continuing
Syllabus Revisions As per GATE 2026 brochure To be confirmed; select papers may see updates
Two-Paper Combinations Permitted list in GATE 2026 brochure To be confirmed in GATE 2027 brochure
Score Validity 3 years 3 years (expected unchanged)

Key points students should note for GATE 2027:

  • The DA (Data Science and Artificial Intelligence) paper, introduced in GATE 2024, continues in GATE 2027 and has seen growing registration numbers.
  • Any syllabus additions or deletions will be formally announced in the GATE 2027 information brochure — students must download it from gate.iitm.ac.in before beginning topic-wise preparation.
  • Permitted two-paper combinations may be updated each cycle; always verify the approved pairings in the new brochure rather than relying on the GATE 2026 list.
  • The GATE score normalisation formula (used when a paper is held across multiple sessions) is applied consistently across cycles and is expected to continue for GATE 2027.

Interdisciplinary Papers: XE, XH and XL

Three of the 30 GATE papers — XE, XH, and XL — are multi-section interdisciplinary papers that allow students from diverse academic backgrounds to sit for GATE. Each paper has a mandatory section and optional sections that students choose from:

Paper Full Name Mandatory Section Optional Sections
XE Engineering Sciences Section A — Engineering Mathematics Any 2 from Sections B to H (Fluid Mechanics, Materials Science, Solid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Polymer Science, Food Technology, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences)
XH Humanities and Social Sciences Section B1 — Reasoning and Comprehension One from Sections C1–C6 (Economics, English, Linguistics, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology)
XL Life Sciences Section P — Chemistry Any 2 from Sections Q to U (Biochemistry, Botany, Microbiology, Zoology, Food Technology)

Students opting for XE, XH, or XL should check the updated list of available sections in the GATE 2027 information brochure. The number of available optional sections may be revised, and the marks distribution within these papers should be confirmed from the official source at gate.iitm.ac.in.
