GATE 2026: Subject Wise Geology and Geophysics Paper Analysis

Based on the previous year's analysis and the expert predictions from various coaching institutes, the Geology and Geophysics paper is expected to be challenging.

Core subjects are expected to be more conceptually deep. We can expect more questions on petrology and structural geology. Expect Seismology questions to be more challenging.

In the GATE 2025 GG paper, students found a significant focus on Earth and planetary systems in the common sections. A few students noted that the Geophysics questions needed heavy calculations.

Subjects Expected Difficulty Level Expected Key Topics and High Weightage
General Aptitude Easy Reading comprehension, series completion, data interpretation
Common section Moderate Earth’s internal structure, plate tectonics, isostacy, remote sensing
Geology Moderate to difficult Stress strains, folds, and faults, petrology, geomorphology, paleobiology
Geophysics Difficult Seismic tomography, anomaly analysis, resisting sounding
