NTA is set to release JEE Main eligibility criteria over its official website: jeemain.nta.ac.in in November 2024. The candidate must qualify the conditions provided by NTA to be eligible for JEE Main 2025. This includes- age limit, educational qualification, nationality, class 12 marks and State code of eligibility. Applications not meeting these conditions will be disqualified.

According the official data, published by NTA, a net-sum of 14,76,557 candidates were recorded to have registered in JEE Main 2024. Out of these only 14,15,110 candidates appeared for the exam.

The candidate must register only application and not more than that. Therefore, the present article will impart clarity over JEE Main eligibility criteria 2025 to prevent candiate’s application from disqualification by NTA.

  • To sit in JEE Main, there is no compulsion to score 75% in class 12 or equivalent qualifying examination.
  • But, to be eligible for JoSAA counseling you need to score either 75% in class 12

OR

You must be in the top 20 percentile of your state board.

  • If the candidate belongs to any reserved category then they are required to score a minimum of 65% in the qualifying examination to get admission in institutions like IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs.

In which subjects do I have to score 75%?

The candidate must take note that 75% should be your aggregate score. This means that on adding up your marks from the main subjects: Physics+Chemistry+Maths and One language Subject + one additional subject should add up to a total of 75% or above. The top score of any one additional subject will be counted.

There’s no age limit restrictions laid on candidates appearing for JEE Main 2025.

It is only for the specific institute the candidate may wish to apply, for which they might be required to fulfill the eligibility requirements.

JEE Main Qualifying Examination

Here is a list of examinations -out of these you are required to pass any one of them to be considered eligible to sit in JEE Main 2025:

  • The final examination of the 10+2 system is conducted by a Central or State Board like the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), etc.
  • Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination conducted by a recognized Board/ University.
  • Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.
  • Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects.
  • Any Public School/ Board/ University examination in India or any foreign country is recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
  • Higher Secondary Certificate Vocational Examination.
  • A Diploma recognized by AICTE or a State board of technical education of at least 3 years duration.
  • General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London/Cambridge/Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level.
  • High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.
  • Those Candidates who have completed the Class 12 (or equivalent) examination outside India or from a Board not specified above should be able to produce a certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) to the effect that the examination they have passed is equivalent to the Class 12 Examination.
  • In case the Class 12 Examination is not a public examination, the candidate is required to have passed at least one public (Board or Pre-University) examination earlier.

Nationality requirement in JEE Main 2025

The nationality must be Indian.

Additionally, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) are also eligible to sit in JEE Main 2025 if they are able to provide documents proving their respective status while filling up the form and their application fee may vary depending on that.

Year of Appearance in Qualifying Examination for JEE Main 2025

Those candidates who have qualified their class 12 or equivalent exam in 2022 or in years preceding that along with those who will not appear for class 12 exam in the current year are not eligible to sit in JEE Main 2025.

Candidates are required to have successfully completed their class 12 examinations or any other equivalent examination in the years: 2024, 2024 or they must currently be in the process of appearing for it.

State code of Eligibility for JEE Main 2025

The state from which the candidate has passed their class 12 (or equivalent) examination will determine their state code of eligibility.

Here, it must be made clear that it does not matter which state the candidate is from, their state code of eligibility depends solely upon the state in which the student appeared for the qualifying examination which made them eligible to sit in JEE Main 2025.

What if you passed class 12 from one state but appeared for improvement from another state?

In this case, the State code of eligibility will be from where the candidate has first passed their class 12 (or equivalent) qualifying examination. The state from which they appeared for improvement will NOT determine the State code of eligibility.

  • The candidates who have either passed or are appearing for Class 12 from NIOS are requested to select the State of Eligibility according to the State in which the study Centre is located.
  • For Indian nationals who have passed their Class 12 (or equivalent) qualifying examination from Nepal/Bhutan, the State code of eligibility will be determined on the basis of the permanent address in India as provided in the passport of the candidate.
  • “The State code of eligibility of OCI passing Class 12 (or equivalent) examination in India is at par with Indian nationals. However, OCI passing the Class 12 (or equivalent) examination from an institution abroad are eligible for Other State quota seats or All India quota seats (but NOT for Home State quota seats) in all NITs, IIITs and Other-CFTIs.”

  1. What if I am appearing for improvement from a different state than the state I have passed my class 12 from, am I still eligible?

Irrespective of whichever state the candidate appeared for their improvement examination, the state code of eligibility will still be determined by the state the student has first passed their class 12 from.

  1. How many attempts are allowed for both JEE Main and Advanced?

For JEE Main, which takes place twice a year in January and April, you are allowed a maximum of three attempts whereas for JEE Advanced there are only two attempts.

  1. What is the age limit for students belonging to a specific category?

Candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 2000.

Five year age relaxation is given to SC, ST and PwD candidates.

  1. What if I have cleared my Class 12 in 2023, am I allowed to sit in JEE Advanced?

If the candidate has cleared their class 12 in 2024/2025 then they are allowed to sit in JEE Advanced but not for the year 2023.

You are eligible to sit in JEE Main if you have cleared your class 12 in 2023 but not JEE Advanced.

  1. What are the compulsory subjects for JEE Main 2025?

There are three papers for three separate courses: B. Tech, B Arch and B Plan. The specific subject requirements for each of these have been provided above in the present article.

  1. Is 75% criteria also applicable for students from a specific category?

No, for SC/ ST candidates, the qualifying marks should be 65% in the class 12 (or equivalent) qualifying examination.

  1. What if I don't meet the 75% criteria?

75% criteria is only for JoSAA counseling.

But if you don’t meet the 75% criteria then you must score in the top 20 percentile of your respective state board. NTA clarifies that either of these two conditions can be met by a candidate to be eligible for JoSAA counseling.
