UCEED 2026 (Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design) is a national-level entrance exam conducted by IIT Bombay for admission to the B.Des programme at 7 premier institutes — including 6 IITs and IIITDM Jabalpur — with a total of 245 seats available. The exam was held on January 18, 2026, the result was declared on March 6, 2026, and counselling is currently active with Round III seat allotment released today on June 10, 2026; Rounds IV and V for vacant seat filling are still ahead.
- Round III Fee Payment: Candidates allotted a seat in Round III must pay the Seat Acceptance Fee by June 14, 2026 (6:00 PM). The fee is Rs. 60,000 for General/OBC-NCL/EWS candidates and Rs. 15,000 for SC/ST/PwD candidates. Non-payment will cancel the allotment.
- Round IV Seat Allotment: Round IV for vacant seats is scheduled for June 24, 2026. Candidates who chose Float status after Round III will be automatically considered for upgraded allotments. In UCEED 2025, Round IV filled remaining seats at IIT Hyderabad and IIT Indore that had been vacated from earlier rounds.
- Round V Seat Allotment: The final allotment round is scheduled for July 3, 2026, with fee payment open until July 9. Round V is the last opportunity for candidates in float status to receive their final seat assignment before UCEED 2026 admissions close.
- Scorecard Download Deadline: UCEED 2026 scorecards can be downloaded from the official portal until July 31, 2026. Qualified candidates who have not yet downloaded their scorecard should do so before this window closes permanently.
What is UCEED 2026?
UCEED stands for Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design. IIT Bombay conducts this exam every year on behalf of all participating design institutes. The exam tests a candidate’s aptitude for design — covering visualization, creativity, observation, analytical thinking, and language skills — and is the only entrance pathway to B.Des programmes at the participating IITs and IIITDM Jabalpur. UCEED was first held in 2015.
For UCEED 2026, the exam was held on January 18, 2026 in two parts: Part A (a computer-based test of 2 hours and 200 marks) and Part B (a pen-and-paper drawing test of 1 hour and 100 marks). Around 16,000 candidates registered and more than 15,000 appeared for UCEED 2026. Counselling is now in its final rounds, with Round III seat allotment released today on June 10, 2026.
The exam opens doors to B.Des programmes at 7 institutes: IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Indore, IIT Roorkee, and IIITDM Jabalpur. A total of 245 seats are available across all categories, making UCEED one of India’s most competitive design entrance exams with over 60 candidates competing for every available seat.

UCEED 2026 Exam Pattern
UCEED 2026 has two distinct parts — Part A (computer-based, 2 hours, 200 marks) and Part B (pen-and-paper drawing, 1 hour, 100 marks). Total exam duration is 3 hours and the total score is 300 marks. Part B carries 75% weightage in the final merit list, making it the most critical section for determining your rank.
Part A — Computer-Based Test (CBT)
| Section | Question Type | No. of Questions | Marks Per Question | Total Marks | Negative Marking |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Section 1 | NAT (Numerical Answer Type) | 14 | 4 | 56 | None |
| Section 2 | MSQ (Multiple Select Questions) | 15 | 4 (with partial marking) | 60 | -1 if any wrong option selected |
| Section 3 | MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions) | 28 | 3 | 84 | -0.71 per wrong answer |
| Part A Total | 57 | 200 |
MSQ Partial Marking: In Section 2, you get +4 only if all correct options are selected and no wrong option is chosen. Selecting fewer correct options (without any wrong choice) earns +3, +2, or +1. Selecting even one wrong option applies a -1 penalty regardless of how many correct options were also selected.
Part B — Pen and Paper Drawing Test
| Question | Type | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 | Drawing — products, people, or scenes with correct proportion, perspective, composition, and shading | 50 |
| Q2 | Design Aptitude — practical and creative response to a design problem or real-world situation | 50 |
| Part B Total | 100 |
There is no negative marking in Part B. Answer booklets are evaluated by design faculty from the participating IITs. Evaluators look for creative thinking, clarity of visual communication, and accuracy of form — not just artistic polish.
Merit List Weightage
Your final rank on the UCEED 2026 merit list is based on a weighted total:
- Part A: 25% of the total score contributes to your rank
- Part B: 75% of the total score contributes to your rank
This weighting means a strong Part B performance can offset an average Part A score to a significant extent. Candidates who score above 70 in Part A (out of 200) and excel in Part B consistently rank in the top 100.
UCEED 2026 Syllabus
The UCEED 2026 syllabus covers 7 broad topic areas in Part A and 2 competency areas in Part B. IIT Bombay does not prescribe a specific textbook list. The best preparation comes from regular drawing practice, visual observation, and awareness of design, environment, and everyday science.
Part A Syllabus: 7 Topic Areas
| Topic Area | What It Tests |
|---|---|
| Visualization and Spatial Reasoning | Mentally rotating 2D shapes and 3D objects; understanding spatial relationships, orthographic projections, and isometric views |
| Observation and Design Sensitivity | Detecting hidden properties in everyday objects; attention to detail, classification, analysis, inference, and design criticism |
| Environmental and Social Awareness | Awareness of environmental issues, sustainability, Indian art forms, culture, heritage, and how design connects with society |
| Analytical and Logical Reasoning | Analyzing qualitative and quantitative information; pattern recognition, series, analogies, and matrix-based reasoning |
| Language | Reading comprehension and understanding of standard English; vocabulary, grammar, and inference from passages |
| Creativity | Verbal and non-verbal analogies, metaphors, signs, and symbols; associative thinking and alternative uses of objects |
| Practical and Scientific Knowledge | Understanding of everyday scientific principles, materials, mechanisms, and how common objects work |
Part B Syllabus: 2 Competency Areas
- Drawing (Q1 — 50 marks): You must sketch products, people, or scenes with correct proportion, perspective, line quality, composition, and shading. This tests your ability to visually represent form and space accurately.
- Design Aptitude (Q2 — 50 marks): You must respond practically and creatively to a design problem or real-world situation, identifying user needs and proposing workable, innovative solutions through sketches and annotations.
There is no single "correct" answer in Part B — evaluators assess your design thinking process, clarity of communication, and overall quality of response.
UCEED 2026 Result and Scorecard
The UCEED 2026 result was declared on March 6, 2026. The scorecard download opened on March 10, 2026, and remains available until July 31, 2026. Candidates who qualified (cleared the Part A cutoff) received an All India Rank (AIR) and were eligible to apply for B.Des admissions through the joint counselling process.

Simply qualifying does not guarantee a seat. With only 245 seats and approximately 5,500–6,000 qualified candidates, only the top-ranked candidates (based on the weighted total where Part B has 75% weight) receive allotments through counselling.
UCEED 2026 Marks vs Rank Analysis
Your rank in UCEED 2026 depends on the total weighted score out of 300 — Part A contributing 25% and Part B contributing 75%. Because Part B carries greater weightage, your drawing and design aptitude performance has the most influence on your final rank. The table below gives approximate rank ranges based on UCEED 2025–26 trend data.
UCEED 2026: Approximate Score vs Rank
| Total Score (Out of 300) | Approximate AIR | Likely Institutes in Counselling |
|---|---|---|
| 218 or above | ~1 to 9 | IIT Bombay (top preferences) |
| 205 – 217 | ~10 to 30 | IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi |
| 190 – 204 | ~31 to 75 | IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad |
| 170 – 189 | ~76 to 334 | IIT Hyderabad, IIT Indore, IIT Roorkee |
| 150 – 169 | ~335 to 981 | IIT Roorkee, IIITDM Jabalpur |
| 135 – 149 | ~982 to 2,000 | IIITDM Jabalpur (if within seat count) |
| 104 or below | 5,895+ | Qualified but unlikely to receive a seat |
Note: The figures above are approximations based on UCEED 2025–26 trend analysis. Actual ranks depend on the distribution of Part B scores in a given year’s cohort, which can shift rank bands upward or downward.
Tie-Break Rules in UCEED 2026
If two candidates have identical total scores, UCEED uses the following tie-break sequence:
- Higher Part B score gets the better rank
- If still tied, higher score in Section 2 of Part A (MSQ) is used
- If still tied, higher score in Section 1 of Part A (NAT) is used
- If all three tie-breakers are equal, both candidates receive the same rank
UCEED 2026 Cutoff
UCEED 2026 has two types of cutoffs: the Part A qualifying cutoff (mandatory threshold to be eligible for counselling) and the institute-wise closing rank (actual admission cutoff based on seat availability after each round). You must clear Part A cutoff first; your final admission depends on institute-wise closing ranks.
UCEED 2026 Part A Qualifying Cutoff
The Part A cutoff is calculated as: General cutoff = Mean + (0.5 × Standard Deviation) of all Part A scores. For UCEED 2026, the mean Part A score was 70.86 and the standard deviation was 25.77.
| Category | Part A Qualifying Marks (Out of 200) |
|---|---|
| General / Open | 83.75 |
| OBC-NCL / EWS | 75.37 (90% of General cutoff) |
| SC / ST / PwD | 41.87 (50% of General cutoff) |
For comparison, UCEED 2025 had a General cutoff of 74.35 (Mean: 61.50, SD: 25.69). The higher 2026 cutoff reflects a relatively better-attempted Part A paper — the mean rose by over 9 points compared to 2025, indicating this year’s cohort performed stronger in Part A overall.
UCEED 2026 Institute-Wise Opening and Closing Ranks — Round I (Open Category)
| Institute | Opening Rank (AIR) | Closing Rank (AIR) |
|---|---|---|
| IIT Bombay | 1 | 14 |
| IIT Delhi | 17 | 28 |
| IIT Hyderabad | 19 | 40 |
| IIT Indore | — | 66 |
| IIT Guwahati | 15 | 77 |
| IIT Roorkee | — | 90 |
| IIITDM Jabalpur | 91 | 142 |
Note: These are Round I closing ranks for the Open (General) category. OBC-NCL, EWS, SC, ST, and PwD category closing ranks differ. Subsequent rounds may show minor adjustments as vacated and upgraded seats are filled in Rounds IV and V.
UCEED 2026 Participating Institutes and Seat Intake
UCEED 2026 provides access to the B.Des programme at 7 design institutes — 6 IITs and IIITDM Jabalpur. A total of 245 seats are available across all categories. Seats are distributed across Open, OBC-NCL, EWS, SC, ST, and PwD categories as per Government of India reservation policy.

| IIT Roorkee | B.Des | 20 | PCM mandatory |
| IIITDM Jabalpur | B.Des | 68 | PCM mandatory |
| Total | 245 |
IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi are the most competitive institutes in UCEED counselling, with Round I closing ranks of AIR 14 and AIR 28 respectively in the Open category. IIT Guwahati has the second-highest seat count (56) but requires PCM, limiting it to science stream candidates. IIITDM Jabalpur offers the most seats (68) and closes at the highest rank range (AIR 91–142), making it the most accessible option for candidates ranked beyond AIR 90.
Arts and commerce stream candidates should note that they are eligible only for IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, and IIT Indore. They should fill institute preferences accordingly during the B.Des application process to avoid receiving allotments at ineligible institutes.
UCEED 2026 Preparation Tips
UCEED preparation is different from most entrance exams. It rewards creative thinking, visual communication, and design observation — skills that develop through consistent practice over months, not last-minute cramming. These tips are especially useful for UCEED 2027 aspirants starting their preparation now.
1. Make Part B Your Top Priority — It Carries 75% Weight
Most candidates spend too much time on Part A (objective questions) and too little on Part B (drawing). But Part B carries 75% of your total weighted score, meaning it has three times the impact on your rank. You should dedicate at least 2 hours daily to drawing practice — sketching products, people, environments, and design scenarios from direct observation. Focus on proportion, perspective, line quality, and shading. Work from life, not just photographs.
2. Practice with Official Previous Year Papers
IIT Bombay has released official previous year question papers and answer keys for UCEED from 2016 to 2025 on its website. These give you the most accurate simulation of the actual exam. Use previous year Part B prompts to run timed drawing sessions under exam-like conditions. Candidates who practice 10 or more papers develop a feel for the expected depth and style of responses.
3. Build Observation and Design Sensitivity Every Day
Observation and Design Sensitivity is one of the most heavily weighted areas in Part A. You can sharpen this skill by:
- Studying everyday objects closely — their form, material, purpose, and why they are designed the way they are
- Practicing spot-the-difference and visual puzzle exercises to train attention to detail
- Following design blogs, museum digital collections, and product design reviews to build your design vocabulary
4. Strengthen Spatial Reasoning Systematically
Section 1 of Part A (NAT) includes questions on 3D visualization, mental rotation, orthographic projection, and spatial pattern completion. Use R.S. Agarwal’s Non-Verbal Reasoning book and practice paper-folding, mirror-image, and cube-net problems regularly to build this skill.
5. Read and Build Awareness in Design and Environment
The Environmental and Social Awareness section covers Indian art forms, heritage, sustainability, and design history. Reading about architecture, product history, and environmental issues will help you answer these intuitively. A simple habit of reading one design-related article per day over six months can significantly improve your performance on this section.

FAQs on UCEED 2026
Ques. What is UCEED 2026 and who conducts it?
Ans. UCEED stands for Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design. IIT Bombay conducts it every year on behalf of 7 participating design institutes, including 6 IITs and IIITDM Jabalpur. UCEED 2026 was held on January 18, 2026, and the result was declared on March 6, 2026. The exam is the only route to B.Des admissions at these institutes, which together offer 245 seats.
Ques. Has UCEED 2026 Round III seat allotment been released?
Ans. Yes. UCEED 2026 Round III seat allotment has been released on June 10, 2026. Candidates who were in Float status after Round II can log in to the official UCEED portal to check their allotment. The fee payment deadline for Round III is June 14, 2026 (6:00 PM). After paying, you must choose Freeze or Float before the Round III withdrawal deadline of June 19, 2026.
Ques. What is the UCEED 2026 Part A qualifying cutoff?
Ans. The UCEED 2026 Part A qualifying cutoff (out of 200) is: General/Open — 83.75, OBC-NCL/EWS — 75.37, and SC/ST/PwD — 41.87. These cutoffs are calculated using the formula: General cutoff = Mean + (0.5 × SD), where the 2026 mean was 70.86 and SD was 25.77. Only candidates who clear this threshold receive an All India Rank and become eligible for counselling.
Ques. How many attempts are allowed in UCEED?
Ans. UCEED allows a maximum of 2 consecutive attempts. If UCEED 2026 was your second attempt, you cannot appear for UCEED 2027. This limit applies regardless of whether you qualified or cleared the cutoff in your first attempt. There is no provision for a gap year — both attempts must be taken in consecutive years.
Ques. Can arts or commerce stream students apply for UCEED 2026?
Ans. Yes. Arts and commerce stream candidates can appear for UCEED and seek admission at IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, and IIT Indore, which accept any stream. However, they cannot apply to IIT Guwahati, IIT Roorkee, and IIITDM Jabalpur, which require Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) in Class XII. Arts candidates should plan institute preferences accordingly during the B.Des application process.
Ques. What is the weightage of Part A and Part B in UCEED?
Ans. In the UCEED 2026 merit list, Part A (computer-based test, 200 marks) carries 25% weightage and Part B (pen-and-paper drawing, 100 marks) carries 75% weightage of the total 300-mark score. This means Part B has three times the impact on your rank compared to Part A. A candidate with an average Part A score but an excellent Part B score can still achieve a top rank.
Ques. What is the seat acceptance fee for UCEED 2026 counselling?
Ans. The UCEED 2026 seat acceptance fee is Rs. 60,000 for General, EWS, and OBC-NCL candidates, and Rs. 15,000 for SC, ST, and PwD candidates. This fee is payable when you receive a seat allotment in any counselling round. Fees paid from Round III onward are non-refundable — withdrawing after paying the Round III fee does not entitle you to a refund.
Ques. What is the total number of seats in UCEED 2026?
Ans. UCEED 2026 offers a total of 245 seats across 7 institutes. The distribution is: IIT Bombay — 37, IIT Delhi — 20, IIT Guwahati — 56, IIT Hyderabad — 28, IIT Indore — 16, IIT Roorkee — 20, and IIITDM Jabalpur — 68. All seats are distributed across Open, OBC-NCL, EWS, SC, ST, and PwD categories as per Government of India reservation norms.
Ques. When is the last date to download the UCEED 2026 scorecard?
Ans. The UCEED 2026 scorecard download facility closes on July 31, 2026. Qualified candidates should download their scorecard from the official UCEED portal before this date. After July 31, IIT Bombay will not provide scorecards or duplicate score certificates through any means. The scorecard contains your Part A score, Part B score, total weighted score, All India Rank, and qualifying status.
Ques. What is the difference between Freeze and Float in UCEED counselling?
Ans. If you choose Freeze after receiving a seat allotment, you accept that institute as your final choice and exit the counselling process permanently. If you choose Float, you provisionally accept the current allotment but remain eligible for a better allotment in the next round. If you receive a better seat in the next round, your current allotment is cancelled automatically. If no better seat is available, you retain your current seat. Float does not guarantee an upgrade — it only keeps you in the running for the next round.
Ques. Which institute is considered the best for B.Des through UCEED?
Ans. IIT Bombay is widely considered the top choice, with its Industrial Design Centre (IDC) — one of India’s oldest and most reputed design schools, established in 1969. IIT Bombay closes at AIR 14 in the Open category, making it the most competitive. IIT Delhi is the second most preferred, closing at AIR 28. For candidates ranked beyond AIR 90, IIITDM Jabalpur offers a strong B.Des programme with the most available seats (68) and closes in the AIR 91–145 range in the Open category.
Ques. What marks are needed to get into IIT Bombay through UCEED 2026?
Ans. To secure a seat at IIT Bombay in the Open category, you generally need a total weighted score of around 218 or above (out of 300) to finish within AIR 14 — the Round I closing rank for IIT Bombay. Since Part B carries 75% weight, an excellent drawing and design aptitude score is essential for this level of performance. SC and ST candidates can seek admission at lower rank thresholds as per category-specific seat allotment rounds.
