What is JEE Main 2026 Cutoff?
The JEE Main cutoff is a percentile or minimum score requirement to give the JEE Advanced and thus gain admission into IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs through JoSSA counselling.
There are only two types of JEE cutoffs:
- Qualifying Cutoff for JEE Advanced: The first is the qualifying cutoff, which is the corresponding number of percentiles required to qualify for JEE Advanced.
- Admission Cutoff for Colleges: The second is the admission cutoff, which is a score or rank required to obtain admission to schools such as NIT and IIIT through JoSSA counselling. This basically depends on the college, branch demands and category.

Ques. What is a good score in JEE Mains 2026?
Ans. A JEE Main score of 200 out of 300 is considered good. These marks mean 98 to 99.9th percentile. It means you will have high chances of admission to the Top NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. If you have a lower percentile, which is below 95%, you will have to look at GFTIs and the state government colleges.
Ques. Can I get NIT at 95 percentile?
Ans. Yes. When you score 95% on JEE Mains, you may gain access to the middle-tier and newer NITs through the JoSSA Counselling system. If you want the top branches, you can apply at GFTIs and the state government colleges.
Ques. Is JEE Main 2026 Harder than 2025?
Ans. The difficulty of the JEE Mains exam (2026) will be intermediate level. Last year, the general cutoff was 93%. Since this year’s total candidates have likely almost doubled since last year, the expected cut-off to qualify for the JEE mains will be 93.5% -95%.

Factors Affecting JEE Main Cutoff 2026
Various factors such as the difficulty of the paper, the number of candidates who appeared, and seat availability, etc., influence the JEE Main cutoff 2026.
- Difficulty of Paper: The difficulty of the paper influences the cutoff as a tougher paper will decrease the cutoff, and an easier paper will increase the cutoff.
- Number of Candidates Appearing: In session 1, around 13 lakh candidates appeared, and in session 2, around 11 lakh candidates appeared, which is likely to increase the cutoff as more candidates will result in more correct answers.
- Overall performance of the candidates: The performance of the candidates will be determine the cutoff, as better collective performance will result in a higher cutoff.
- Normalisation Process: NTA uses percentile normalisation across multiple shifts to ensure fairness, and final percentile scores will be used for the cutoff.
- Previous Years’ Cutoff Trends: NTA maintains consistency in the JEE Main cutoff, and previous years’ cutoff will be used as reference.
- Seat Availability: If a larger number of seats are available, then the cutoff is likely to be reduced if the number of candidates does not increase significantly.
- Category-wise Reservation Policies: Separate cutoff will be released for various categories. Reserved categories' cutoffs are often lower than the general or unreserved categories.
JEE Main Previous Years Cutoff Trends (2025-2021)
As per the previous year's cutoff trends, we can estimate that the 2026 JEE Main cutoff will be around 1-2 percentiles higher than that of 2025 and not more than that.
- The JEE Main cutoff in 2025 was reduced by around 1 percentile compared to the 2024 cutoff due to the increase in the difficulty level of the paper.
- In 2025, the cutoff was reduced for General, OBC and EWS categories, but was increased for SC, ST and the PwD categories.
