In JEE Main 2025 January session, the high-weightage chapters were calculus in mathematics, mechanics and current electricity in physics, and physical chemistry.

  • Along with calculus and algebra, matrices and determinants accounted for 18% of questions. 3D geometry and vectors contributed significantly, often totalling 12-16% of the section.
  • Optics was one of the most scoring chapters in physics. 24 questions appeared across all shifts in JEE Main 2025.
  • Aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids have become one of the ‌frequently asked questions in the organic section. Approximately 18 questions appeared across shifts.

In this article, we will break down highly weighted chapters across subjects to prioritise in the JEE Main 2026.

Key Summary

  • In Mathematics, Calculus and algebra dominate. Matrices, determinants, and 3D geometry together contribute significant weightage.
  • Electromagnetism, mechanics, and optics are the highest-scoring in physics. Modern physics has a consistent appearance in JEE Main.
  • Physical chemistry led the chemistry section in 2025. Chemical bonding and coordination questions appear frequently.
  • Prioritize consistent high-weightage chapters, but maintain balanced preparation due to frequent NTA weightage changes.

Physics: High Weightage Chapters to Prioritise for JEE Main 2026

In the January 2025 JEE Main session, the Physics paper focused on conceptual understanding and numerical problems.

  • A high volume of questions mainly came from electromagnetism and mechanisms. An average of 6-7 questions per shift.
  • Questions from optics were quite high in the January session, a ‌total of 24 questions across shifts.

Students preparing for JEE Main 2026 should practice problems from these high-weightage topics to boost scores.

Chapters Average number of questions per shift Quick study tip
Electromagnetism 6-7 Revise formulas and sign conventions
Mechanics (Kinematics, Newton’s law, & work and energy) 6-7 Strong basics + Many numerical.Practice 20+ mixed problems
Optics 3-4 Ray diagram + lens formula practice
Thermodynamics 2-4 Practice Heat-work-energy
Modern physics 2-3 Memorize key concepts and units

Ques. What are the most important topics in physics for JEE Main 2026?

Ans. Based on January 2025 trends, focus on high-weightage chapters like thermodynamics, modern physics, optics, and mechanics.

Ques. How to prepare for a tricky and moderately difficult paper in JEE Mains?

Ans. For JEE Main physics, practice numerical problems daily along with revision. Revise highly weighted chapters. Take mock tests regularly to build speed and accuracy. Solve the last 5 years of JEE Main papers.

High Weightage Chapters in Chemistry to Prioritise for JEE Main 2026

Chemistry was comparatively easier in JEE Main 2025. Organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry were equally balanced. However, the physical chemistry questions were higher than in previous years.

  • There were 11-12 physical chemistry questions per shift in 2025. It is better to prepare for the surprises this year as well.
  • Organic chemistry had a slight edge in most shifts. Chemical bonding and coordination compounds questions were consistent across shifts.

Even though focusing on high weightage can boost your score, try to balance all chapters to not to be surprised in the exam.

Chapter Average number of questions per shift Total number of questions across shifts
General Organic Chemistry 3-4 23
Coordination compounds 2-3 19
Thermodynamics 2 17
d and f block elements 2-3 14
Electrochemistry 1-3 13
Chemical bonding 1-3 13
Basic concepts of chemistry 2 13

Ques. What books to use for chemistry last-minute preparation?

Ans. Use OP Tandon for chemistry along with NCERT. These will cover all the highly weighted topics in JEE Main.

High Weightage Chapters in Mathematics to prioritise in JEE Main 2026

Mathematics in JEE Main 2025 was challenging. Questions spanned the entire syllabus, and it was balanced.

  • A high number of questions came from calculus and algebra. 3D geometry and matrices questions appeared frequently across shifts.
  • There were 16 sequence and series questions that appeared across shifts in the January session.

Along with calculus and algebra, practice more problems on matrices, determinants, and vectors to boost your scores in mathematics.

Chapter Questions per shift Quick study tip
Calculus (limits, derivatives, integrals, applications) 6-8 Daily practice of concepts + application problems
Algebra (sequences & series, complex numbers, quadratics) 7-9 Memorize standard results and solve a variety of problems
3D geometry 3-4 Geometry + analytic approach practice
Matrices and determinants 2-4 Learn properties and quick solution methods
Probability and vectors 2-4 Create a concise, 1-page formula list to revise throughout the day.

Ques. Which Math chapters have the highest weightage for JEE 2026?

Ans. Maths usually has a balanced syllabus across the paper. Calculus and algebra chapters usually cover around 30% of the weightage. 3D geometry, matrices & determinants both cover 6% weightage. Revise these topics by solving PYQs on these topics to boost your score.

High-weightage chapters can significantly improve scores across physics, chemistry, and mathematics. For JEE Main 2026, you can expect some surprises as well. NTA changes weightage frequently. However, there are highly weighted chapters that are consistent over the years.
