JoSAA 2026 Round 5 is the final round — seat allotment results are out on July 16, 2026 and the fee payment and Freeze deadline is July 20, 2026. In this round only Freeze and Withdraw are available; Float and Slide options are closed.
Round 5 is JoSAA 2026’s last seat allocation round. Students who selected Float or Slide in Round 4 must first check if they received a seat upgrade in Round 5 — the upgraded seat replaces the earlier allotment and you cannot revert. Students who did not receive an upgrade carry their Round 4 allotment into the final decision. Not taking any action by July 20 forfeits the seat with zero refund.
- Round 5 allotment result: July 16, 2026 (5:00 PM onwards at josaa.nic.in).
- Freeze and fee payment deadline: July 20, 2026 — missing it cancels your seat with no refund.
- Float and Slide are not available in Round 5; the only options are Freeze or Withdraw.
- Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) 2026: Rs. 30,000 for Gen / OBC-NCL / EWS; Rs. 15,000 for SC, ST and PwD (same for IITs and NIT+ system).
- Voluntary withdrawal before the deadline: Rs. 7,000 is deducted as a processing charge and the balance is refunded (Rs. 23,000 for Gen/OBC/EWS; Rs. 8,000 for SC/ST/PwD).
- Zero refund if you take no action and miss the deadline.

Your Two Options in JoSAA 2026 Round 5
In Rounds 1 to 4 of JoSAA 2026, four response options were available: Freeze, Float, Slide and Withdraw. Round 5 removes Float and Slide. You now have exactly two choices:
| Option | What It Means | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Freeze | Accept the allotted seat permanently | Proceed to JoSAA Virtual Reporting Centre (VRC) for online document verification and fee payment |
| Withdraw | Reject the seat and exit JoSAA 2026 entirely | Rs. 7,000 deducted as processing fee; balance of Seat Acceptance Fee refunded; permanent exit from JoSAA 2026 |
Not responding by the July 20, 2026 deadline is treated as a forfeit — the seat is cancelled and the entire Seat Acceptance Fee is forfeited with zero refund. Always take an explicit action before the deadline, even if you are undecided until the last hour.
What If You Got a Float or Slide Upgrade in JoSAA 2026 Round 5?
If you selected Float or Slide in Round 4, JoSAA may have allotted you a new seat in Round 5. This upgraded seat is now your active allocation — you cannot revert to the Round 4 seat. Evaluate the upgrade carefully before deciding:
- Float upgrade: You moved to a different institute or branch that ranked higher in your preference list. The new allotment could be in a different city or a completely different programme. Cross-check it against your original choice list.
- Slide upgrade: You received a better branch within the same institute. Since the institute does not change, this is almost always worth freezing.
- No upgrade received: Your Round 4 seat carries forward unchanged as your Round 5 allotment. Make your decision based on that seat.
Log in to josaa.nic.in and download your Round 5 allotment letter before taking any action. Do not assume your Round 4 allotment is still active if you had selected Float — verify the Round 5 letter first.
When Should You Freeze Your JoSAA 2026 Seat?
Freezing is the right choice for most students in the final round. Freeze your seat if any of these apply:
- You are satisfied with the allotted institute and branch.
- You received a Float or Slide upgrade and the new seat is acceptable.
- You do not yet have a confirmed and paid seat at another institution.
- You are uncertain whether state counselling or CSAB will offer a better outcome.
- The JoSAA seat is your best available option for your target programme.
Freezing a JoSAA seat does not block you from exploring other counselling processes simultaneously. If a better seat materialises later through another process, you can withdraw from JoSAA at the institute level — but you will forfeit the Seat Acceptance Fee at that stage. The safer default is to freeze now and reassess, rather than withdraw and risk ending up without any seat for 2026.
| Category | Seat Acceptance Fee (JoSAA 2026) | Refund if You Withdraw Before Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Gen / OBC-NCL / EWS | Rs. 30,000 | Rs. 23,000 (Rs. 7,000 processing charge deducted) |
| SC / ST / PwD | Rs. 15,000 | Rs. 8,000 (Rs. 7,000 processing charge deducted) |
When Does Waiting (Withdrawing from JoSAA) Make Sense?
In Round 5, "waiting" means withdrawing from JoSAA entirely to pursue other options. This is the riskier path and makes sense only when all of the following are true:
- You have a confirmed and paid seat at another institution — a state counselling process, CSAB special round or a private university that has sent you a confirmed offer letter.
- You are certain you will not join the JoSAA-allotted institute or branch under any circumstances.
- You are planning to drop a year and re-appear for JEE 2027. Freezing a seat and then not reporting at the institute later creates complications and significantly delays any partial fee refund from the institute.
Do not withdraw from JoSAA simply because you are hoping for a better seat elsewhere. Other counselling processes carry no guarantee of a seat. If you withdraw from JoSAA on that basis and the other process does not come through, you have no fallback for the 2026 academic year. If in doubt, freeze first.
What Happens After You Freeze Your JoSAA 2026 Seat?
After freezing, JoSAA moves you to the Virtual Reporting Centre (VRC) — a fully online process. Complete these steps within the notified window:
- Online document upload at VRC: Upload scanned copies of Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets, JEE rank card, category certificate (if applicable) and a passport-size photograph on the JoSAA portal.
- Seat Acceptance Fee payment: Pay Rs. 30,000 (Gen/OBC/EWS) or Rs. 15,000 (SC/ST/PwD) online via net banking, debit card or credit card.
- Virtual document verification: JoSAA officials verify your DOB, category, PwD status and qualifying exam status through the VRC. If a discrepancy is found, you are asked to resubmit the flagged document within the given window. Non-response = "Not Reported" status = seat cancelled.
- Provisional Admission Letter: After successful VRC clearance, a Provisional Admission Letter is generated in your JoSAA login. A Seat Cancellation Letter is issued if documents are rejected.
- Physical reporting at the institute: This is a separate step governed by each institute’s own schedule (published on josaa.nic.in). IIT reporting schedules are listed under the IIT-specific section of the portal.
Missing any VRC step after freezing can still result in seat cancellation. Track all JoSAA 2026 post-allotment deadlines on josaa.nic.in.
JoSAA 2026 Freeze vs Withdraw: Quick Decision Guide
| Your Situation | Recommended Action |
|---|---|
| Satisfied with allotted seat | Freeze |
| Received a Float or Slide upgrade and it is acceptable | Freeze |
| Unsure if another counselling will give a better seat | Freeze first — withdraw at institute level later if needed |

| Planning to drop a year for JEE 2027 | Withdraw |
| Will definitely not join this allotment under any scenario | Withdraw |

JoSAA 2026 Freeze and Upgrade FAQs
Ques. Can I upgrade my seat in JoSAA 2026 Round 5?
Ans. No. Float and Slide options are only available in Rounds 1 to 4. Round 5 is the final round and only Freeze and Withdraw are offered. If you were on Float in Round 4 and received a better seat in Round 5, that upgraded seat is your active allotment and you can freeze it.
Ques. What happens if I do not respond in JoSAA 2026 Round 5?
Ans. Not responding by the July 20, 2026 deadline is treated as a forfeit. Your seat is cancelled and the entire Seat Acceptance Fee is forfeited — no refund is issued. Always take an explicit action (Freeze or Withdraw) before the deadline to either secure your seat or recover a partial refund.
Ques. How much refund will I get if I withdraw in JoSAA 2026 Round 5?
Ans. If you withdraw before the July 20, 2026 deadline, Rs. 7,000 is deducted as a JoSAA processing charge. Students in the Gen / OBC-NCL / EWS category receive Rs. 23,000 back; SC, ST and PwD students receive Rs. 8,000 back. Zero refund if the deadline is missed.
Ques. Can I freeze my JoSAA seat and still participate in state counselling?
Ans. Yes. Freezing a JoSAA seat does not prevent you from appearing in state counselling simultaneously. However, if you later accept a state counselling seat, you must formally withdraw from JoSAA at the allotted institute’s level and the Seat Acceptance Fee paid to JoSAA will not be refunded. Check each state counselling’s rules on simultaneous participation.
Ques. What is the difference between Float and Slide in JoSAA?
Ans. Float (called YES-Upgradation on the portal) keeps your current seat active but enters you in the pool to be upgraded to any institute or branch that ranks higher in your preference list in the next round. Slide keeps your current institute but seeks a better branch within that same institute. Both options are available only in Rounds 1 to 4 and are removed in Round 5 (the final round).
Ques. I selected Float in Round 4 but did not get a better seat in Round 5. What is my current allotment?
Ans. If Float did not yield an upgrade, your Round 4 seat carries forward as your Round 5 allotment. Log in to josaa.nic.in, download your Round 5 allotment letter and verify the details. Then choose Freeze to accept that seat or Withdraw to exit JoSAA 2026 before July 20, 2026.
