An NRI candidate must meet the JEE Main 2026 cutoff to secure a seat in NITs. There is no separate cutoff for NRI candidates. However, keep in mind that If you have a good JEE mains score of 75%ile or above (the more the better), you can get a good college in your desired branch under "DASA". If you can pay the amount in DASA, keep it as a backup and apply for all the Indian embassy schemes.

Candidates who are not citizens of India (by birth or naturalized) shall be considered as foreign nationals. JEE main seats allotted to such foreign national candidates are supernumerary with a cap of 10% of total number of seats in every course. There are no separate supernumerary seats or sub-category for females in the foreign national supernumerary seats. The foreign national candidates, at the time of registering for JEE (Advanced) 2026 are not required to write JEE mains 2026. They can directly register for JEE (Advanced) 2026 subject to fulfillment of other eligibility criteria.

Some of the JEE Mains eligibility criteria that all NRI must meet includes:

  • NRIs must have completed Class 11th and 12th (or equivalent) from any recognized board outside India.
  • Students must have studied Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, along with one amongst Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, or a vocational subject.
  • Candidates must have secured at least 75% aggregate marks in Class 12th (or equivalent). For SC/ST candidates, the requirement is 65%.
  • Students must rank in the top 20% of their respective boards.
  • Candidates should be born on or after October 1, 2001. A five-year relaxation is given to SC, ST, and PwD candidates.
  • NRIs must provide proof of their NRI status, which includes identity proof, a birth certificate, and a Class XII mark sheet.

Based on the performance in JEE Main, NRI students are ranked along with Indian students. Their JEE Mains rank determine their eligibility for admission to NITs, IITs in India and other centrally funded institutions.

What is the first choice for NRI after clearing JEE Mains?

The first choice for NRI after clearing JEE Mains is IITs in India. The Indian Institutes of Technology may not figure in the top 200 on several international university rankings but they remain the first choice when it comes to undergraduate education for NRI children of particularly IIT alumni.

Dilip Kumar's parents, for instance, shifted from Dubai to India five years ago with the objective of getting him into an IIT. He trained for the last couple of years and joined IIT-Kharagpur this year. The Muralishankars also relocated to Coimbatore from the US four years ago to help their daughter Smriti prepare for the IITs.

“Many IIT alumni who have lived overseas prefer to send their children to the IITs even if they can afford a foreign education," said R Nagarajan, dean of international and alumni relations at IIT-Madras.
