CUSAT FAQs

Ques. What is the NSS Club at CUSAT?

Ans. National Service Scheme(NSS) is a permanent youth programme under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, launched on 24th September 1969, the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation. The Motto of NSS, ‘Not Me But You’, reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service. NSS helps the students to develop an appreciation for other people’s points of view and also to show consideration to other living beings. The philosophy of the NSS is well-documented in this motto, which underlines the belief that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of the society as a whole, and therefore, the NSS volunteer shall strive for the well-being of the society.

Ques. What facilities does the Main Campus of CUSAT provide for its students?

Ans. The main campus is 1.5 km off the National Highway 47 in South Kalamassery. The campus is set in about 180 acres of sprawling green landscape with rolling hills, fresh breeze and golden sunshine. With the main building styled in traditional Kerala architecture, the campus houses various Departments & Schools except Marine Sciences, in addition to the administrative office, auxiliary institutions, hostels, guest house, visiting faculty complex, computer centre, central library, staff quarters, playgrounds and other amenities. There is a fascinating myth about Thrikkakara connecting Vamana, the fifth avatar of Lord Vishnu (also called Thrikkakarayappan), and the asura (demon) King Mahabali, popular among his subjects, as poverty and sorrow were unheard of during his reign. This popularity made the gods jealous, and they tricked Mahabali into being banished to Patala, the nether world. He was given permission to visit his subjects once a year. Onam, the famous harvest festival of Kerala, is a celebration of this yearly visit.

CUSAT: 15 Answered Questions

How is cusat fire and safety branch?

Shridhar SriramanLives in Pondicherry, Puducherry, India

One of my friends shed light on the actual scenario of the Fire and Safety Department of CUSAT

  • The syllabus is highly illogical and difficult to comprehend so students often lose their interest while studying.
  • Students who miss any chapter or topic in the curriculum are given a compartment that they have to clear by working very hard alongside completing the huge CUSAT curriculum.
  • During placements, the visiting recruiters set high cutoffs around 8–8.5 GPA in all semesters with no backlogs.
  • The students who clear the written exam are called in for an interview which is very challenging. Students who clear the interview are offered lucrative packages only to realize after joining the company that the CTC was misleading and inflated.
  • Fire and Safety students have no job opportunities in off-campus placements at all.

So, I will recommend you to not join the Fire and Safety branch in CUSAT at any cost.

Debdeep Majumder
Susmita GuhoB.Tech Computer Science, Cochin University Of Science and Technology (2010)

In the context of CUSAT "spot admission" and "real-time admission" are terms that are sometimes used interchangeably, but they can have slightly different meanings depending on the specific context. Both the terms are explained below:

Spot Admission :

  • A candidate is often admitted to a program on the spot or right away under a spot admission method, frequently at a particular event or counseling session.
  • It often happens when a university or institution holds a special admissions session to fill open seats in a specific degree or program.
  • Spot admission refers to candidates being admitted immediately after submitting the required paperwork, paying the required fees, and fulfilling all other admission conditions.

Real-Time Admission :

  • The term "real-time admission" can signify a variety of things that include continual or instantaneous admissions.
  • It can relate to any application evaluation and rapid decision-making procedure for admission, frequently occurring in real-time or shortly after the application deadline.
  • Real-time admission may include electronic application systems, prompt application processing, and prompt notification of admission decisions.

Depending on the unique policies and practices of the institution, these phrases may be used differently in the context of CUSAT or other universities. While real-time and spot admission both attempt to speed up the admissions process, there may be differences in the specific steps and lead times.

How good is CUSAT MBA?

Ahalya BoseStudied at Cochin University (2019)

CUSAT Kochi offers two types of MBA programs, Full-Time and Part-Time for a duration of two years and three years respectively. The full-time MBA offers specialization in Marketing, Finance, HRM, and International Marketing among a few others while the part-time evening professional MBA program offers a specialization in International Business and Travel and Tourism. During their final year, students work on a two-month independent research study-cum-internship at a registered corporation. Admission: Admissions into the program are done on the basis of cores in management entrance tests - KMAT of Kerala or C-MAT of AICTE or CAT of IIMs followed by a GD and PI round conducted by the university. Placements: CUSAT MBA placement scenario is decent and this year the CUSAT School of Management Studies recorded the highest and average packages at INR 20.14 LPA and INR 9.32 LPA, respectively. If I score 150 marks in CUSAT CAT exam what will be my rank and can I get into any of the branch there?

Sanovar Lohia
Ahalya BoseStudied at Cochin University (2019)

A score of 150 marks in the CUSAT CAT exam will fetch you a rank between 6000-7000. Based on this rank, you will only get core branches like Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical in CUCEK, the second campus in spot admission only.

If you aren’t aware of spot admission, please visit the institute and get information on the same. If you aren’t able to get spot admission, you can also take admission through an NRI seat in SOE on the first campus

What problems do North Indian students face at the CUSAT SOE? Is it true that there is no girls’ hostel in SOE for non-Keralite students in the 1st year?

Susmita GuhoB.Tech Computer Science, Cochin University Of Science and Technology (2010)

CUSAT offers an amazing campus life and trust me the locals of Kerala are very hospitable and humble. You will love your time here even as a North Indian. However, every coin has two sides and likewise being a North Indian at CUSAT will bring forth some challenges too. I have listed down a few

Language barrier: Malayalam is a language that is difficult to understand and even more to learn so North Indians face major language issues here. But the bright side is your Malyali peers will help you and never make you feel left out.

Cultural differences: Every aspect of CUSAT portrays Kerala's culture be it the faculty, crowd, or food. Adjusting to this culture might be a little difficult for North Indians.

Mindset difference: Despite being a metro city, the mindset is narrow and Kerala culture is highly followed. Girls are restricted from roaming around past sunset, and rarely will you see them dressed in western wear.

Home visits: While the local students can be seen visiting their homes during 2-3 days' leave, North Indians cannot go to their homes unless the semester ends. But most students prefer traveling and enjoying with friends rather than visiting their families so it’s not a big issue.

Campus politics: As a North Indian you cannot comment much on the campus politics in CUSAT due to cultural and language barriers. Hence most of the organizational and administrative roles are assigned to locals.

These are some common problems faced by North Indians in CUSAT. If you think you can overcome these, you are welcome here!

Why do people choose naval architecture? What is the scope of naval architecture in India or abroad? I am thinking of doing it at CUSAT.

Anurag shrivastavaLives in Cochin

CUSAT offers a four year B.Tech program in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding. My brother pursued this degree from CUSAT a few years back.

Naval Architecture deals with vessels, moving or stationary, that serve in a marine atmosphere. The vessels include ships plying in ocean or coastal areas, offshore rigs, underwater vehicles, submarines etc. Naval Architects perform mathematical calculations to ensure the sea worthiness of these vessels. For this purpose, softwares and programs are created and fed as algorithms to a machine. Most universities offer a secondary specialization alongside Naval Architecture. If you pursue your B.Tech in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding, other than N.A. calculations, you will also work on shipbuilding techniques and practices. My brother also worked on a project on the preliminary design of a ship plying in a specific route required to carry cargo(s) at its maximum capacity(meeting the owner’s requirements).

As far as job prospects are concerned, as a Naval Architect, you can be employed by shipping companies, classification societies, consultancies, or research institutes. You can also work at shipyards or at offshore companies that manufacture maritime equipment like life-saving appliances or ship engines.

Indian organizations offer a limited salary in this field, usually ranging from 25,000 - 50,000 INR per month. Abroad, the salary usually ranges from 12 - 40 LPA. Your salary will depend upon your location and job profile. Offshore offers good packages which are way higher than shipbuilding. But because of changes in oil prices at present, only a few offshore companies hire freshers.  Depending on your job type and designation, you will get to travel sometimes/frequently for business, projects or some technical testing work.

You can go for this course at CUSAT. However, I would recommend you to first prioritize the top Indian and Foreign institutions offering this program and to keep CUSAT as a secondary choice.

Is CUSAT worth it for a Bihari student?

Rekha Solanki
Sikha Singh RajputStudied B.tech in Information Technology, Cochin University Of Science and Technology (2017)

The worth of a college does not depend on which state you belong to. It's up to you to make your time at the college worthwhile.

No matter which college or university you are in, they all have almost the same structure of syllabus and you have to study by yourself. If you do not have many options for college, you can choose an institute with a decent rank and low course fee.

Let’s take a look at some of the parameters to study in CUSAT.

Pros:

  • CUSAT is not that costly if compared to other colleges.
  • Since the institute is in Cochin, you can learn a different language.
  • CUSAT offers several other departments like Foreign Language, Hindi, Economics, Legal Studies, social science, and Management. These departments offer short courses. If you want you can learn new skills from such courses and participate in departmental events.
  • The living cost in Kerala is lower than in many states of India. There is also less distraction as compared to cities like Delhi and Bangalore.
  • There is an Incubation center that promotes Entrepreneurs.
  • You can earn while studying. There are many start-ups, also you can give tuitions. You won’t have to ask for money from your parents. Many of my friends did the same.
  • You can go on trips and participate in games in your spare time.

Cons:

  • Because of the different culture and language, sometimes you may feel alienated from others.
  • According to student reviews, sometimes the professors can be biased.
  • The placement of the college is average.
  • If you neglect studies, you have to go through rough times dealing with arrears and drops.
  • You won’t be able to go home easily on vacations as it is too expensive.
  • It is not a student-friendly college.

So ultimately, it all rolls down to how you use the opportunity. No matter which college you go in, if you want to learn new things and stay proactive, you can surely make the best of your days at the college. So, work hard and try to score well.

Is CUSAT in Kuttanad good for engineering?

Shridhar SriramanLives in Pondicherry, Puducherry, India

To be honest, you will be very disappointed if you join CUSAT expecting to be taught by highly experienced professors and a top-notch infrastructure. If you are nevertheless joining CUSAT, bear in mind that you will have to resort to self-study most of the time.

  • Academics: CUSAT is a big disappointment in terms of the quality of education offered. Most courses are taught by guest faculties who have no knowledge or interest in teaching.
  • Infrastructure: The infrastructure again is in a poor state and no provisions are made for extracurriculars and sports. cricket etc. Don't expect a court for basketball either.
  • Electricity supply: The institute has a poor electricity supply and there isn’t even a generator facility.
  • Library: The library is under-stocked and most of the books you will need won’t be available. Moreover, it is so small that you will feel cramped here.

Considering all the above points, I don’t think it’s wise to join CUSAT in Kuttanad for Engineering.
