IIT Madras Courses & Fees 2025

Both IIT Madras and IIT BHU are highly renowned engineering institutions in India. The admissions to both of them are conducted through JEE Advanced each year.

Here is a comparison between B.Tech Mechanical at IIT Madras and B.Tech Electronics Engineering at IIT BHU: 

The placements for B.Tech Electronics are more promising as evident from the above statistics. But if you are truly interested in B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, IIT Madras will offer you an excellent academic environment and tremendous opportunities.

NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) IIT Madras' machine learning course is considered to be one of the best online resources for learning machine learning. It is very comprehensive, covering a wide range of topics in machine learning, and is taught by well-known experts in the field. Many students have found it to be very helpful in their studies and career development. My friend recently joined this course and shared her experience of the classes in the first week.

The lectures are conducted live and the first one gave an insight into the structure of the course. To make the most out of this course, one needs to have certain abilities.

• Skilled in Python programming
• Basic knowledge of MATLAB.
• Knowledge of Mathematical topics of “Engineering Mathematics”.

IIT Bombay and IIT Madras were established in 1958 and 1959 respectively. Both these institutions have emerged as highly renowned centers of Engineering studies in India. Both IIT Bombay and IIT Madras are more than an institution, they are in fact a brand with a high relevance and strong network in the industry. 

The ‘Bombay’ or ‘Madras’ is a part of this brand name. This is not the address of these institutions, as both these cities have long been renamed as Mumbai and Chennai respectively. The institution name has not been altered because of the prestige and legacy carried by both these titles. 

Thus, IIT Bombay and IIT Madras haven’t been renamed over the years.

IIT Hyderabad and IIT Madras are some of the most prestigious engineering institutes in India. There’s a huge competition to get into either of them, and both accept JEE Advanced results for B.Tech admissions.

Both the options offer equally good academics and placements. But if Mechanical Engineering truly interests you, I would suggest you opt for IIT Madras without second thoughts. Take some time and thoroughly think about your interest and passion before choosing one branch over the other. 

IIT Madras does not offer B.Tech ECE. Instead, it offers B.Tech in Electrical Engineering. The Electrical Engineering department is one of the oldest at IITM.

Electrical Engineering at IIT Madras: Students in the Electrical Engineering department of IITM secure an admission to top universities like Stanford, UCB, Harvard, Georgia Tech, and The University of Michigan. The highest package offered to Electrical Engineering students of IITM during 2023 placements was INR 68.5 LPA, and the median package is INR 35.89 LPA. 
2. B.Tech ECE at IIIT H: ECE at IIIT Hyderabad revolves around signal processing. It also includes applied areas such as computer vision and speech, communications, VLSI/embedded systems, robotics, IoT, etc. The highest package offered to B.Tech ECE students of IIIT H was INR 45 LPA during the 2023 placements. The average package for the same year was INR 27.24 LPA for B.Tech ECE.

Both these institutions are highly reputed in the field of engineering, and they offer equally good academics and placements. But I would recommend you opt for Electrical Engineering at IIT Madras since it has a bigger brand name and a richer legacy. Moreover, Electrical students at IITM receive even better packages as compared to ECE students at IIIT Hyderabad. 

Choosing between IIT KGP Electrical, IIT Madras Mechanical or IIT Indore CS should depend on your area of interest, career goals, and preference. All of the IITs offer excellent academic structure which helps to enhance both your theoretical and practical skills.

• However, opting for IIT Madras Mechanical is a better choice as it is one of the oldest IITs and is ranked amongst the top academic institutions in India.
• IIT Madras offers an excellent curriculum and research facilities for the Mechanical department.
• The total course fee for 4 years of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras is INR 11.17 Lakhs.
• IIT Madras is known for its excellent placement statistics.
• The highest package is INR 66 LPA, the median package is INR 17 LPA and the lowest is INR 7 LPA.

Both IIT Hyderabad and IIT Madras are well-recognized institutions in India. However, opting for Computer Science at IIT Hyderabad or Mechanical at IIT Madras completely depends on your choice, interest, and career goals.

• According to me, opting for Mechanical from IIT Madras is a better choice as IIT Madras is one of the oldest IITs in India and it holds 1st rank in Engineering in the NIRF ranking.
• IIT Madras offers 4 years of Mechanical Engineering courses to students.
• The cost fees for four years including the tuition fees, hostel fees, and one-time fees is around INR 11.17 Lakhs.
• IIT Madras exceptionally good placement offers to the students with the highest package being INR 66 LPA, the median package being INR 17 LPA and the lowest being INR 7 LPA.
• For Computer Science at IIT Hyderabad, the highest package is INR 44 LPA and the lowest package is around INR 4.5 LPA.
