However, as per the IIT Madras NIRF 2025 report, the median package for UG (4-year) was INR 17.50 LPA and for UG (5-year) was INR 19.40 LPA in 2024. Further, the median packages for PG (2-year) and PG (3-year) were INR 12.90 LPA and INR 12.25 LPA, respectively, in 2024.

480 companies participated in the IIT Madras Placement 2024. Students become eligible for campus placements from 7th semester. Many top companies like Google, microsoft, apple, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan visit the campus for placements. The highest package I think was 4.3 crores bagged by a student in cs from Jane street trading. Average would be like 15 lpa. Percentage of students getting placements would be like 60% cause many go for research or higher studies and don't sit for placements I want to do an ms in some foreign University in cs related subjects after getting the btech degree

My friend has enrolled himself for B.Sc. Data Science and Programming course from IIT M. He carefully accessed the course curriculum.

According to him, the course requires at least 4 to 6 hours of study each day.

One can not simply study it on the weekends and cope up. My friend has a tight working schedule, and therefore, he is considering leaving this course.

However, it’s important to note that CTCs are usually inflated highly and include joining bonuses and stock options that are not permanent.

Generally, in the electrical branch, almost 80-90% of students get placed. The highest salary package offered is 1 CPA. The lowest salary package offered is 12 LPA. The top recruiting companies are Jane Street, Google, and Microsoft. Almost 60% of students got internships in P&G and Dr. Reddy Laboratory. The top roles offered are engineer in petroleum industries and analyst in pharmaceuticals.

However, Power Systems and Power Electronics branch has its own shortcomings.

Although most companies of EE allow Power students to sit for placements, if they lack knowledge of ECE subjects of GATE, they cannot clear the written test
You will have limited options unless you are proficient in VLSI. Interviewers may not consider you if you haven’t done VLSI courses
Core companies of Power Electronics hardly visit the campus. Those that do visit, either require a high cutoff like 9 CGPA like Enphase Systems or offer a package lower than 8 LPA.

So what is the solution to getting better packages as a student of Power Systems and Power Electronics? Well, you have two options

Either, do some VLSI courses offered at IIT Madras itself. This will get you a good package from top companies like Intel and AMD.
Or become proficient in coding

These two ways can save you from getting a below-average package. It’s highly advisable to do some courses not related to power engineering to increase your chances of employment because most core companies offer packages lower than 10 LPA.

How are metallurgy placements at IIT Madras?

My friend graduated from IIT Madras a few months ago and was devastated by the placement scenario of her branch. It almost seems that only Electrical and Computer Science students were eligible for decent placements, rest all suffered.

Talking about Metallurgy specifically, he did not find a single core company visiting the campus for placements almost as if the branch was non-existent. He was told to maintain a good CGPA of 7-8+ for core roles but no core company visited.

In case you are looking for a high-paying non-core job, which is the case for most IITians, you will have to appear for several written and online exams not related to your specialization. You will have to make a good resume by including extra skills, developing your personality, and going the extra mile in your academics to achieve a high-paying job.

Concludingly, Metallurgy has little or no core job prospects so you will have to work hard to get non-core jobs.

The median package offered to the B.Tech. students is INR 18 lacs per annum. There were more than 400 companies which placed B.Tech. students. Bajaj Auto, Cetak, TCS, Reliance, Qualcomm, Amazon, EY India are the major recruiters of B.Tech. program.

The highest CTC (Cost to Company) package offered to IIT Madras student was INR 1.31 crore per year. The lowest package offered was INR 5.4 lacs per year. There were 172 offers made which were above 30 lacs. The popular recruiters include American Express, Cogoport, Linecraft, AI and Sap Labs.

Last year, almost 15% of students were placed in the first round of placement. They are offered an average income of 19 lakh after selection. Post graduate student received a number of international offers. It is ranked 285 in the QS World University Rankings 2023.
