IIT Madras Placements 2024: Highest Package, Average Package, Top Recruiters

IIT Madras has concluded its 2023 placement drive. 445 students were reported to have been placed on the first day itself. Students received 407 pre-placement offers. 25 students received a salary package higher than INR 1 CPA. The job roles offered to the students include Software Development Engineer, Data Science, Quant, Core Engineer, etc.

During IIT Madras Placements 2022, the B.Tech CSE batch received an average salary of INR 41.72 LPA.

Both the Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) program at IT Hyderabad and the Mechanical Engineering program at IIT Madras are highly esteemed and have strengths and weaknesses. Eventually, it depends on your interests and career goals.

You should go for IIT Hyderabad, EEE if

• You have a passion for electrical and electronic systems, 
• You want to enter the IT sector with your priority being a high-paying job. This is because IIT Hyderabad has a relatively flexible curriculum and allows you to opt for some CSE electives.

You should go for IIT Madras Mechanical if

• You are inclined toward Mechanical systems
• You have zero interest in coding/programming
• You want to do MBA, IAS, or other higher studies in foreign universities 
• You want to experience a more dynamic and lively campus life 

It's important to research both programs and contact the current batch of seniors to get a 

a better understanding of the curriculum and career opportunities.

According to placement data from the academic year of 2022-2023, the average package for an MTech in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at IIT Madras was around INR 21.48 LPA, and the Highest Package was around INR 1.98 CPA.

However, it’s important to note that CTCs are usually inflated highly and include joining bonuses and stock options that are not permanent. 

Almost all the students get placed and MTech students get plenty of placement opportunities. Around 500 recruiters made offers. Some of the top recruiting companies were

• Qualcomm
• Intel
• Sandisk
• Cypress Semiconductor

Generally, in the electrical branch, almost 80-90% of students get placed. The highest salary package offered is 1 CPA. The lowest salary package offered is 12 LPA. The top recruiting companies are Jane Street, Google, and Microsoft. Almost 60% of students got internships in P&G and Dr. Reddy Laboratory. The top roles offered are engineer in petroleum industries and analyst in pharmaceuticals.

However, Power Systems and Power Electronics branch has its own shortcomings.

• Although most companies of EE allow Power students to sit for placements, if they lack knowledge of ECE subjects of GATE, they cannot clear the written test 
• You will have limited options unless you are proficient in VLSI. Interviewers may not consider you if you haven’t done VLSI courses
• Core companies of Power Electronics hardly visit the campus. Those that do visit, either require a high cutoff like 9 CGPA like Enphase Systems or offer a package lower than 8 LPA.

So what is the solution to getting better packages as a student of Power Systems and Power Electronics? Well, you have two options 

1. Either, do some VLSI courses offered at IIT Madras itself. This will get you a good package from top companies like Intel and AMD.
2. Or become proficient in coding

These two ways can save you from getting a below-average package. It’s highly advisable to do some courses not related to power engineering to increase your chances of employment because most core companies offer packages lower than 10 LPA.

The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering is one of the oldest having been started in the same year as the Institute. Its teaching, research, and consultancy activities spread across various fields ranging from conventional metallurgy to frontiers of materials science.

However, IIT Madras lacks core companies for every branch for placements. The same is the case with the Metallurgy department. Students should be encouraged from the beginning of their course for placements. In the worst-case scenario, only a single student gets placed in a core company. 

The average salary package offered was barely INR 6 LPA. 

The placements for the core jobs are concerned, chances are rare as the number of roles offered is very less. However, there are numerous non-core job opportunities offered in Metallurgy.

The placement scenarios for an MS (research program) in Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras depend on several factors, including the student's research area, academic performance, skills, and experience. Generally, students who have completed their MS (research program) in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Madras have good placement opportunities in both academia and industry.

• Academic Placements: Graduates from the MS (research program) in Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras have the opportunity to pursue a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or related fields in top-ranked universities in India and abroad. Students who wish to pursue an academic career can also apply for postdoctoral positions in prestigious universities or research institutes.

• Industrial Placements: Graduates from the MS (research program) in Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras can also pursue a career in the industry. Mechanical engineers are in high demand in various industries such as manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, energy, and robotics. Graduates from IIT Madras are highly valued by the industry and can expect to receive competitive salary packages.

In addition to the above, students who have completed their MS (research program) in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Madras can also explore entrepreneurship opportunities, research and development positions in government agencies, and consulting roles in engineering firms.

 Yes, engineering design students at IIT Madras can get good packages. The placement package offered to the students depends on various factors such as their academic performance, skills, and the demand for their skills in the job market.

However, IIT Madras is known to be one of the top engineering colleges in India, and the students from this institute are highly sought after by various companies in India and abroad. The average placement package for engineering design students at IIT Madras ranges from 10-15 lakhs per annum, with some students receiving even higher packages depending on their skills and performance.

It's important to note that while a good placement package is certainly a valuable outcome, it should not be the only factor that students consider when choosing their career path. It's also important to consider factors such as personal interests, job satisfaction, and opportunities for growth and development in the field.

My friend graduated from IIT Madras a few months ago and was devastated by the placement scenario of her branch. It almost seems that only Electrical and Computer Science students were eligible for decent placements, rest all suffered.

Talking about Metallurgy specifically, he did not find a single core company visiting the campus for placements almost as if the branch was non-existent. He was told to maintain a good CGPA of 7-8+ for core roles but no core company visited.

In case you are looking for a high-paying non-core job, which is the case for most IITians, you will have to appear for several written and online exams not related to your specialization. You will have to make a good resume by including extra skills, developing your personality, and going the extra mile in your academics to achieve a high-paying job.

Concludingly, Metallurgy has little or no core job prospects so you will have to work hard to get non-core jobs.

IIT Madras is ranked among the top 50 colleges in the world for civil and structural engineering courses. It is the only institution where the average salary of the CE branch is better than the average across all branches. This could be because one student of IIT Madras was placed at a salary of INR 52.50 lakh – the highest salary for any Civil Engineering student.

Placements for all the branches at IITs in general and IIT madras, in particular, are the same except for CS and EE. This is because most students of branches other than these two end up taking non-core jobs like finance, analytics, software, consulting, and management because they offer a better package than core jobs. On the other hand, CS and EE students get excellent offers from many software companies thereby offering better roles.
