- It is NOT a traditional long panel interview.
- You rotate through 6–12 short stations (usually 5–10 minutes each).
- Each station tests a different skill or value: ethical reasoning, communication, empathy, teamwork, problem-solving, motivation for medicine, critical thinking, resilience, etc.

Pro Tip for Indian Students Targeting 2027: Aim for UCAT 2800+ and 90–95% in PCB + strong personal statement + volunteering experience to stay competitive.
UK universities do not require NEET-UG for admission. Their admission criteria are based on school grades, entrance exams (like UCAT), interviews, etc. Every Indian student who wants to practice medicine in India after completing MBBS abroad MUST qualify for NEET-UG if they plan to return and practice in India.
UK universities DO NOT ask for NEET scores during admission — only Class 12 marks + UCAT + interview matter. But you must submit NEET scorecard later during visa/embassy stage if you ever want to return and practice in India. From 2026–2027 onwards, you will have to clear the NExT exam to get a license to practice in India (replacing FMGE).
Therefore:
- If your goal is to practice medicine in the UK or another country, NEET is not required.
- If you plan to return to India to practice medicine after completing your MBBS in the UK, you must have qualified in the NEET exam.
The entire process is done through UCAS (one application for up to 4 medicine choices + 1 non-medicine backup). You cannot apply directly to universities.

Following are some of the reasons why a medical aspirant should pursue an MBBS in UK:
The curriculum and structure of MBBS at UK universities is slightly different from that of India. An MB degree is awarded here qualifying a student as a medical doctor. It is the minimum qualification required to practice as a doctor in the UK.
Thus, MBBS in UK is equivalent to an MB (BS, ChB or Bch), or BAO depending upon the university from which you are pursuing your medical degree. The subjects covered include Anesthesiology, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Pathology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, etc.
Important Reality Check: Fully-funded scholarships for undergraduate MBBS/MBChB (A100) for international students (including Indians) are extremely rare/non-existent at top universities like Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, KCL, Edinburgh, Manchester, or Sheffield. Medicine is excluded from most major programs (Chevening, Commonwealth, GREAT, Rhodes – all postgraduate only).
Most “full scholarships” you see online are for postgraduate/graduate-entry medicine. Universities charge £40,000–£70,000/year precisely because they get no government subsidy for international places – so they rarely discount them heavily.
| Scholarship / Award | University / Provider | Amount (per year unless stated) | Eligibility Highlights | How Rare / Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hull York Medical School International Scholarship | Hull York Medical School | Up to £2,400–£10,000 (merit-based) | Outstanding academics + offer holder; automatic consideration | Limited; one of the few explicit for international undergrad medicine |
| QMUL John Abernethy Scholarships | Queen Mary University of London (Barts) | £5,000/year (for 5 years = £25,000 total) | Need-based + academic merit; household income reviewed annually | Competitive but achievable for strong Indian applicants |
| Imperial Faculty of Medicine Scholarship | Imperial College London | £1,000–£5,000 (dean’s/merit prizes) | Top academic/interview performance; widening participation focus | Very small amounts; not full tuition |
| UCL Medical School Bursary | University College London | Up to £7,000/year (means-tested) | Low household income + strong academics | Rare for internationals; priority to UK/EU |
| King’s International Scholarship | King’s College London | £1,000–£9,000 | High-achieving offer holders | Limited numbers |
| Edinburgh Global Undergraduate Scholarship | University of Edinburgh | £1,000–£5,000 | Excellent academics | General undergrad; medicine sometimes eligible |
| University of Manchester Global Scholarship | University of Manchester | £2,000–£5,000 | Indian students with A*AA equivalent | Automatic for eligible offer holders |
| Sheffield International Undergraduate Scholarship | University of Sheffield | £2,000–£10,000 reduction | High grades + personal circumstances | Good chance for Indians (large community) |
| Newcastle University International Excellence Scholarship | Newcastle University | Up to £6,000 | Top academic performance | Medicine eligible |
| NHS Bursary (Years 5–6 only) | All UK medical schools | Full tuition + £3,000–£5,000 grant | Available to ALL students (including internationals) from Year 5 if committing to work in NHS | Biggest real “saving” – covers last 1–2 years completely |
Indian students need a Student Visa to study MBBS (5–6 years).

| Return to India | Write NExT exam (mandatory) – Get permanent license - Practice anywhere in India | Immediate after graduation |
| Combined (Most Popular) | Do FY1/FY2 in UK (earn £70–90 lakh in 2 years) - Return & clear NExT - High-paying jobs in India | Best ROI |
Note: No restrictions announced on Graduate Route for medical graduates – still 2 years full work rights.
A UK-trained doctor earns 3–10 times more than an Indian MBBS graduate in the first 10 years. Even if you return immediately, corporate hospitals pay UK graduates 50–100% higher than local MBBS + MD.
MBBS in UK remains one of the best options abroad for Indian students who want a globally respected degree, cutting-edge clinical exposure from Year 1, and a clear pathway to practice in India, UK, USA, or Australia.
