PTE is a computer-based English language proficiency test that assesses a candidate’s English language proficiency for academic or immigration purposes. It tests the reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills of non-native English speakers. PTE scores are accepted by over 3,500 institutions worldwide, including Oxford, Harvard, and Yale, and for visa applications to the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.
PTE offers different exam categories to suit various needs:
- PTE Academic is designed for university admissions and visa applications to Australia and New Zealand.
- PTE Core is specifically recognized by the Canadian government for immigration and citizenship applications.
- For the UK, the PTE UKVI tests, including PTE Home and PTE Academic UKVI, are accepted for work, family, and settlement visa applications.
The registration fee ranges from ₹15,284 to ₹18,000, depending on the category of the test you want to take.
PTE has recently updated the exam pattern. 2 new question types have been added to the Speaking & Writing section: "Summarize Group Discussion" and "Respond to a Situation". This update increases the total number of question types from 8 to 10, but the number of questions has been reduced from 70-82 to 54-62. Note that the duration of the exam remains the same at 2 hours.
Additionally, PTE will implement AI and human evaluation for content scoring, and tasks like essay writing will now include expert reviews on structure, coherence, and language range. The results are typically available within 48 hours. The PTE Score Report is valid for 2 years, although Australia accepts scores up to 3 years old.
There are 500+ PTE test centers located across 127 countries, and options for online testing are available too. There are 62 test centers across India, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.

PTE to IELTS Band Score Conversion
Having a better understanding of PTE band score comparison is important to check the cut-off requirements. PTE Band Score is machine-scored and can be best understood when compared with the IELTS band score chart. The following PTE score chart will explain the scoring system when compared to the IELTS score:
| PTE to IELTS Band Score Conversion | ||||||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PTE Academic | 24-30 | 31-38 | 39-46 | 47-54 | 55-62 | 63-70 | 71-78 | 79-85 | 86-89 | 90 |
| IELTS | 4.5 | 5.0 | 5.5 | 6.0 | 6.5 | 7.0 | 7.5 | 8.0 | 8.5 | 9.0 |
PTE to TOEFL Band Score Conversion
The following PTE score chart will explain the scoring system when compared with the TOEFL iBT score:
| PTE to TOEFL iBT Score Conversion | |||||||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PTE Academic | 38 | 42 | 46 | 50 | 53 | 59 | 64 | 68 | 72 | 78 | 84 |
| TOEFL iBT | 40-44 | 54-56 | 65-66 | 74-75 | 79-80 | 87-88 | 94 | 99–100 | 105 | 113 | 120 |
An 89-90 PTE score is the highest you can get. Scores between 74-85 are very good and can greatly help with admission. PTE doesn’t have a passing score, but a score of 50-63 is considered average and may make admission harder. Getting 65 or above improves your chances of getting into top universities.

How Are PTE Scores Calculated?
The PTE Score Calculator helps estimate PTE scores using automated scoring systems. PTE Academic gives an overall score that measures your English skills using the Global Scale of English. Some tasks are scored just on correct or incorrect answers, while others consider correctness, quality, and formal aspects like word count, fluency, and pronunciation.
- Correct or incorrect: Full points for correct answers, zero for wrong ones.
- Partial credit: Some tasks give partial points if answers are partly correct.
- Content and Form scoring:
- Content: How relevant the answer is to the prompt. If the content is irrelevant, no points are given.
- Form: Looks at the length and structure of the response. If length is correct, the answer is further scored on vocabulary, grammar, spelling, structure, coherence, and overall language use.
This way, PTE scores reflect both accuracy and the quality of English used in the response.
