PTE Core is a computer-based English language proficiency test conducted by Pearson PLC for Canadian immigration and professional purposes. It was officially launched in 2024 and is approved by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for permanent residency, citizenship, and certain work-related pathways. PTE Core assesses 4 core skills: Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening, through real-life, everyday English scenarios rather than academic-focused tasks.

PTE Core is completed in a single 2-hour session at authorized test centers, and scoring is fully automated using AI-based evaluation. Scores are reported on a scale of 10-90, mapped to the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). The test includes task types such as read aloud, repeat sentence, writing email, responding to situations, and listening-based multiple-choice questions. Results are typically available within 48 hours.

The exam fee in India is INR 18,000 (subject to change), and test dates are available year-round across major cities. As a newer alternative to exams like IELTS, PTE Core is specifically designed to measure functional English skills required for living and working in Canada.

Important Note: PTE Core is not interchangeable with PTE Academic. PTE Academic is for study abroad (universities globally, including Canada, and student visas), while PTE Core focuses on practical, non-academic English and is tailored for Canadian immigration only.

PTE Core Scoring 2026

The PTE Core is scored on a scale of 10-90. The test uses a responsible AI system, which evaluates responses based on predefined scoring algorithms rather than human examiners. The scoring is based on the following criteria:

  • Content: Relevance and completeness of the answer.
  • Oral Fluency and Pronunciation: For speaking tasks.
  • Grammar and Vocabulary: For writing and speaking tasks.
  • Spelling and Written Discourse: For writing tasks.

Note: Many questions are integrated tasks, meaning one response can contribute to multiple skill scores. For example, a speaking response may affect both Speaking and Listening scores.

The PTE score report includes the following:

  • Overall Score (10-90)
  • Communicative Skills Scores:
    • Speaking
    • Writing
    • Reading
    • Listening

Each communicative skill is also scored on the same 10-90 scale.

How to share PTE Core scores with the IRCC?

Sign in to your account to view your Score Report. You can share your score with institutions by providing your unique Score Report Code (SRC). For Canada visa applications, the Government of Canada (IRCC) can access your scores directly using this SRC.

PTE Core Score to CLB Conversion

PTE Core scores directly map to the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB). The CLB is the Canadian standard for measuring English language proficiency for Canadian PR applications. It is divided into 10 levels, which compare with the PTE Core score as follows:

CRS Points and Its Relevance

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is a points-based system used by Canada to rank immigration candidates under programs like Express Entry. Express Entry is a system for managing skilled worker applications for PR.

PTE Core scores affect CRS points by determining your Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level. Higher CLB scores mean more CRS points, which improve your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian PR.

PTE Core vs PTE Academic

PTE Core and PTE Academic are both English language tests conducted by Pearson. While they follow a similar computer-based format and use the same 10-90 scoring scale, they are designed for different purposes.

Feature PTE Core PTE Academic
Purpose Canadian immigration Study abroad & student visas
Accepted By Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Universities and colleges worldwide
English Type Everyday, functional English Academic English
Use Case PR, citizenship, work pathways University admission, professional registration
CLB Mapping Yes (for Canada PR) Not primarily used for CLB

How to Prepare for PTE Core?

Based on discussions shared by recent PTE Core candidates on Reddit, here are some practical and realistic tips for preparation:

  • Do not depend only on prediction files. Many test-takers reported that repeated or leaked questions were unreliable. Focus on understanding question types instead of memorising templates.
  • Fluency matters more than perfection. In speaking tasks, clear pronunciation and natural flow scored better than overly memorised or robotic answers.
  • Practice Repeat Sentence daily. Candidates frequently mention this as one of the most scoring yet challenging tasks. Consistent practice improves memory and listening accuracy.
  • Use full-length mock tests. Several users said mock test scores were close to their real scores when they practiced under timed conditions.
  • Be careful with registration details. A few candidates shared that name mismatches (passport vs booking details) caused issues at the test centre. Always ensure exact passport details are used.

PTE Core is an IRCC-approved English test for Canadian immigration, scored on a 10-90 scale and mapped to CLB levels. It is a 2-hour computer-based test focused on practical English skills, suitable only for PR and work pathways, not academic purposes.
