What is the IELTS Exam?

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is an English language proficiency test that non-native English speakers (including Indians) require to migrate abroad for study, work, or settlement purposes.

Conducted by IDP, IELTS tests the 4 basic communication skills in English: Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing.

As per IDP, IELTS is currently accepted by around 12,500 organisations, including universities and governments, in over 140 countries, including the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Who needs it? Most Indian students studying abroad For immigration and PR

UKVI IELTS

UKVI IELTS is a UK-specific version of IELTS. It is used to study in UK universities and to obtain visas.

  • Same Academic and General Training modules as the regular IELTS exam.
  • Same pattern and syllabus as the regular IELTS.
  • It is a Secure English Language Test (SELT), which means it has additional security checks. Due to these extra checks and fewer test centers, the fees for UKVI IELTS are higher.

IELTS Life Skills

IELTS Life Skills is another UK-specific version of IELTS designed for UK visas (other than UK student visa). It has the following categories:

  • Life Skills A1: For a family visa.
  • Life Skills A2: For extension of the family visa (not available in India, only in the UK).
  • Life Skills B1: For settlement and citizenship.

What is the IELTS One Skill Retake?

One Skill Retake (OSR) is a very useful feature of the IELTS exam. It allows you to take only one skill (speaking, reading, listening, or writing) to improve your score.

  • Available only for computer-based tests.
  • Taken at the same test center.
  • For a particular test, only one skill can be taken and only once.
  • Must be taken within 60 days of the test date.

Note: Not all universities and immigration authorities accept One Skill Retake scores, so candidates must confirm acceptance before opting for OSR.

  • Some Indian test-takers report concerns about the Speaking section evaluation, particularly around clarity and pronunciation. IELTS, however, maintains that examiners are trained to assess intelligibility and communication effectiveness, not accent.
  • Writing Task 2 is widely regarded as the most challenging section for many Indian candidates, as it requires structured argument development, precise language, and strict adherence to task requirements.
  • According to official IELTS test-taker performance data for the 2024 testing year, Indian candidates recorded their lowest average scores in Writing (6.2), followed by Listening (6.4), indicating that productive skills remain the key improvement areas.

IELTS Exam Tips for Indian Students

Since the Writing and Speaking sections are the weakest areas for Indian students, here are some tips to help you improve in these sections:

  • Task Achievement (Writing Task 1): For Academic Task 1, summarise data and present key points clearly. For General Training Task 1, it’s about fulfilling the purpose of the letter (e.g., making a request or complaint). Higher bands need full coverage with relevant details and the correct format.
  • Task Response (Writing Task 2): It looks at how well you answer the question, give a clear opinion, and support ideas with examples. Higher bands need a fully developed, relevant response.
  • Organization and Flow: Use clear paragraphs, link ideas logically, and avoid repetition.
  • Vocabulary Use: Checks how well you use words and your ability to paraphrase. Higher bands show skillful use of varied and precise vocabulary.
  • Grammar Use: Looks at your grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation. Higher bands use a mix of simple and complex sentences with few errors.
  • Fluency in Speaking: Speak clearly without hesitating, repeating, or rushing. Use linking words to connect ideas smoothly.
  • Pronunciation: Clear pronunciation, with good rhythm and stress, so people can easily understand you.
  • Resources: Cambridge IELTS (Vol. 18 to 20), IELTS Liz, E2 IELTS, IELTS Advantage.
