- Some Indian test-takers report concerns about the Speaking section evaluation, particularly around clarity and pronunciation. IELTS, however, maintains that examiners are trained to assess intelligibility and communication effectiveness, not accent.
- Writing Task 2 is widely regarded as the most challenging section for many Indian candidates, as it requires structured argument development, precise language, and strict adherence to task requirements.
- According to official IELTS test-taker performance data for the 2024 testing year, Indian candidates recorded their lowest average scores in Writing (6.2), followed by Listening (6.4), indicating that productive skills remain the key improvement areas.

IELTS Exam Tips for Indian Students
Since the Writing and Speaking sections are the weakest areas for Indian students, here are some tips to help you improve in these sections:
- Task Achievement (Writing Task 1): For Academic Task 1, summarise data and present key points clearly. For General Training Task 1, it’s about fulfilling the purpose of the letter (e.g., making a request or complaint). Higher bands need full coverage with relevant details and the correct format.
- Task Response (Writing Task 2): It looks at how well you answer the question, give a clear opinion, and support ideas with examples. Higher bands need a fully developed, relevant response.
- Organization and Flow: Use clear paragraphs, link ideas logically, and avoid repetition.
- Vocabulary Use: Checks how well you use words and your ability to paraphrase. Higher bands show skillful use of varied and precise vocabulary.
- Grammar Use: Looks at your grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation. Higher bands use a mix of simple and complex sentences with few errors.
- Fluency in Speaking: Speak clearly without hesitating, repeating, or rushing. Use linking words to connect ideas smoothly.
- Pronunciation: Clear pronunciation, with good rhythm and stress, so people can easily understand you.
- Resources: Cambridge IELTS (Vol. 18 to 20), IELTS Liz, E2 IELTS, IELTS Advantage.
