University of Sheffield's Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), UCAS code A100, is a 5-year full-time programme offered by the School of Medicine and Population Health, based adjacent to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield. Sheffield ranks 92nd globally (QS WUR 2026) and #113th in Medicine (QS Subject Rankings 2026). The programme is GMC-accredited and features the UK's largest Patients as Educators programme, with clinical placements beginning in Week 2 of Year 1.

Total tuition cost for international students is GBP 2,37,875 (~₹3.01 Crore) over 5 years. Sheffield offers only 18 international places per year on the A100 programme, making it one of the most competitive medical schools in the UK for overseas applicants. Sheffield is the most affordable major UK student city, with monthly living costs averaging GBP 837–1,000 (~₹1.06–1.27 Lakh/month).

Admission Status (2026 Entry): Applications for September 2026 entry are now closed. The next intake is September 2027, with the UCAS deadline on October 15, 2026. Indian students must sit the UCAT between July and September 2026 before submitting their UCAS application. International applicants attend an online panel interview (not in-person MMI).

Total Living Cost (5 years, mid estimate) GBP 55,000 ₹69.65 Lakh

Sheffield offers one of the lowest total investment figures among Russell Group medical schools for international students. Combined with the city's low cost of living and a 99% graduate employment rate, the ROI is stronger than most comparable UK medical schools.

Sheffield's MBChB is a GMC-accredited 5-year degree at a Russell Group university with one of the UK's earliest clinical starts and the largest Patients as Educators programme in the country. For Indian students, the programme is directly accessible via CBSE Standard XII with 85%+ in required subjects. The critical constraints are the extremely limited 18 international places per year and the high UCAT cutpoint for overseas applicants (2070/2700 in 2025–26). There are no scholarships available for international MBChB students — full self-funding is required. Sheffield's low cost of living (~₹1.06 Lakh/month) makes it one of the most financially manageable UK cities for Indian medical students.

FAQs

Ques. Can Indian students with CBSE Standard XII apply directly to the University of Sheffield MBChB, and is NEET required?

Ans. Yes, Indian students with CBSE or other recognised Standard XII qualifications can apply directly to Sheffield's MBChB via UCAS. You need a minimum of 85% aggregate in Standard XII including Chemistry or Biology and a second science subject. NEET is not required by Sheffield. You must sit the UCAT in the year of application and achieve a minimum score of 1800/2700 (the overseas cutpoint for interview was 2070/2700 in 2025–26). Sheffield does not read the UCAS Personal Statement during shortlisting — your UCAT score determines whether you are invited to interview.

Ques. How many international students does Sheffield accept for MBChB, and what are the chances for Indian applicants?

Ans. Sheffield accepts only 18 international students per year on the A100 MBChB programme. For 2025 entry, approximately 2,200 applications were received for 315 total places across both courses. Approximately 100 international applicants are invited to online panel interviews for those 18 places — an interview-to-place ratio of roughly 5.5:1. Indian applicants compete in the international pool and are ranked separately from home applicants based on UCAT scores.

Ques. Are there any scholarships available for international students studying MBChB at the University of Sheffield?

Ans. No. The University of Sheffield's International Undergraduate Scholarship (GBP 2,500/year) explicitly excludes Medicine (A100 and A101) students. There are no dedicated scholarships for international MBChB students at Sheffield. NHS bursary funding in Year 5 is available only to UK-resident (home) students. Indian students should explore external scholarships such as the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation scholarship or the JN Tata Endowment loan scholarship as potential funding sources.
