Scope after Masters in Clinical Psychology in UK

One of the most important things to note is that mere completion of a masters in clinical psychology does not qualify you for clinical practice in the UK. For a career as an independent practicing clinical psychologist, you will need to have a minimum of three years of a doctorate in clinical psychology which is HCPC (Health Care Professionals Council) approved.

However, this does not mean that you cannot work at all. With a master's degree, you can apply for assisting roles like assistant psychologists or work under a practicing clinical psychologist. Before we dive into the details of job roles and salaries offered, let us focus on the academic advances you can make with your masters from UK.

You can choose to study further and pursue a doctorate degree in clinical psychology in UK. It is suggested to choose courses approved/accredited by BPS.

  • The applications to these doctorate courses for most universities are made through a common portal. (Training House for Postgraduate Training Courses in Clinical Psychology).
  • You are required to have a first-class honors master's degree in clinical psychology.
  • You may also need Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership to get into these courses
  • You can obtain a GBC by getting a BPS accredited degree or conversion course.

Most Doctorate courses are funded by NHS and you will often be offered employment by NHS with the completion of your doctorate degree. However, you can also choose to work in the private sector or independently.

Jobs after Masters in Clinical Psychology in UK

As mentioned above you cannot under the title of Clinical psychologist, as this requires you to register with HCPC, which can only be done after completion of your doctorate degree. However, with a master's in clinical psychology you can choose to work as a research assistant or assistant clinical psychologist/assistant psychologist.

Payscale offered to the various assistant and trainer psychologists are:

  • Assistant psychologist- 20,000 to 22,000 GBP a year
  • Trainee clinical psychologist- 30,400 GBP a year
  • With experience, one can earn around 40,000 GBP to 50,000 GBP a year.
  • Consultant psychologist- 67,000 to 80,000 GBP.

Note: NHS pays a 20% salary supplement to clinical psychologists in London, 15% for outer London, and 5% for fringe areas.
