Durham University operates a September (primary) intake with a limited January intake for select Master's programs. The university has an estimated acceptance rate of 40 to 45%.

UG applicants apply through UCAS with the Equal Consideration deadline, while PG taught applicants apply through the Durham Application Portal on a rolling basis. MBA admissions follow multiple rounds, and PhD applications remain open throughout the year with a recommended early submission.

Indian students applying to Durham University must meet specific academic and English language requirements.

  • UG admission: 80% to 89% in Class 12 (CBSE/ICSE or equivalent).
  • PG admission: Bachelor’s degree with 55% to 65%, depending on the course requirement.

English language requirements include:

  • IELTS 6.5 for most UG and PG taught programs.
  • IELTS 7.0 for some competitive courses and MBA admission.
  • Minimum band requirement: 6.0 for most programs; MBA generally expects 6.5 per band.

Durham does not provide a Class 12 English waiver, so Indian applicants must submit a valid English language test score. Required application documents include academic transcripts, SOP, reference letters, CV/Resume, passport copy, work experience documents (MBA), and research proposals for PhD applicants.

Durham University Application Tips for Indian Students

Indian applicants improve their chances at Durham, particularly for the Inspiring Excellence Scholarship, with these specific steps:

  • Apply early: October to mid-January submissions get faster offers and a better chance at the Inspiring Excellence Scholarship 1st round review.
  • Submit Inspiring Excellence application separately: This scholarship requires a separate application form on the Durham portal, with a personal statement explaining your potential for positive impact.
  • SOP research alignment: 500 to 1,000 words citing specific Durham faculty research and module names; avoid generic UK SOP templates.
  • Reference quality: Choose 2 Bachelor's faculty members who can detail academic strengths in detail; Durham references carry significant weight.
  • Bachelor's transcript clarity: For first-class equivalent, the transcript must clearly show 70%+; Indian universities with CGPA scales need a conversion certificate.
  • MBA interview prep: Durham MBA interviews are competency-based; prepare 5 to 7 STAR-format examples covering leadership, conflict, and impact.
  • IELTS at first attempt: Durham does not waive English. Target 7.0+ to be safe; LLM Law and MSc Finance specifically need 7.0 overall.
  • College choice: Durham's collegiate system lets you nominate a college preference; research each one's culture (e.g., Hatfield for sports, Hild Bede for community feel, Trevelyan for music).

Durham admission for Indian students is competitive but structured, with clear academic requirements, rolling PG admissions, and defined UCAS timelines for UG applicants. Most successful applicants combine strong academics (70%+ for competitive programs), IELTS 6.5–7.0 scores, and an application submitted early in the cycle. Costs remain significant, with tuition ranging from £28,500–£41,000 (₹36.7–₹52.9 Lakhs), making scholarship planning and early applications important. Since Durham follows a collegiate system and course-specific requirements, applicants should check program-level criteria rather than relying only on general university requirements.

Scholarship

  • I received a £10,000 scholarship in my first year for academic excellence in my 12th boards. I did not apply for this scholarship; the university granted it by themselves.
  • £10,000
  • British Citizens are entitled to student loans, but Indian students can take loans from Indian banks for education abroad.
  • I am unsure how many students receive scholarships per year.

Scholarship

  • No, I did not have any scholarship. I had taken an education loan of 16 lakhs from Bank of India with a moratorium of 16 months. ROI was 11%. My monthly Emi was 18,500 payable for a tenure of 15 years.

Scholarship

  • Yes. 5000 GBP for international students. So almost all “exemplary” International students received it. It depends on your tuition fee as well so students with more tuition fee got more scholarship, going up to 18000 GBP for MBA
  • And there are other scholarships as well ranging from 2000 GBP to full scholarships. An example is the Hatfield Lioness Scholarship which is a 100 percent scholarship which includes tuition and accommodation and even travel expenses for one female student per year in Hatfield College.

Scholarship

  • I didn’t receive any scholarship.
  • Some of my friends who are studying LLM (Masters in Law) receive £5000 scholarship due to work experience.
  • I’m not sure how many students receive scholarships but on an average students receive £5000-7000 scholarship amount. It all basically depends on your grades, work experience and the course which you are applying to.

Scholarship

  • There’s a scholarship based on merit, which this year for finance was 9.5 CGPA. It had a deduction of 5000 pounds. One of my batchmates received it; he had a CGPA of 9.8 something. I don’t know of any other such financial aid provided; I think there are scholarships for the disabled ones but I don’t know of any such. Scholarship amounts are varied and can be 2000 to 7000 .
