Admission Experience

  • I applied for:
    • Queen Mary
    • Durham
    • Edinburgh
    • Leeds
    • Bristol
    • Liverpool
    • Warwick
  • I got accepted by:
    • Edinburgh
    • Queen Mary
    • Bristol
    • Warwick
    • Liverpool
  • I got rejected by:
    • Leeds saying I wasn’t qualified enough,
  • Didn’t opt for Queen Mary, as it’s in London, quite expensive, and its ranking was too low compared to others. The same goes for Bristol and Liverpool. Making a decision between Durham and Warwick was tough as they weighed similarly; I chose durham
  • Particularly for me, having a CGPA of 8.5 and good scores in English in 12th, getting to Durham was smooth enough; just the problem was the Statement of Purpose; one needs to make it very strong so as to show your interest; the minimum score required to enter is 7.5 average CGPA, and the needed subject of a bachelor's degree depends upon what you are pursuing. A minimum score of 6.5 is required in IELTS, but if you have good scores in your 12th CBSE or ICSE Boards (90 and above) then it’s not required. I chose Durham because it’s a prestigious college, has a high ranking and has a famous business school. I just placed a bet on this after doing a hell of a lot of research.
  • I applied for the Sept 24 intake. My reply came in a week after the application was done. I gave my documents to my agent; he made the application, and the documents that I gave were the passport, 10th, 12th, and bachelor's mark sheets, statement of purpose, letter of recommendation, and resume. He submitted it and after some time, my letter of recommendation were verified by the university and then after a week, my reply came back

Class Schedule

6

  • It’s very difficult for the finance student to understand what the professor is teaching; it’s very much theoretical and not practical. There are ways to make it practical but they focus just on the theoretical part. The classes scheduled depend upon your course; for me, it was 4 classes and 3 workshops in a week in term 1.
  • The timing varies from 9 am to 6 pm. One class is typically 1-2 hrs and a workshop is mostly 1 hr. The average number of students in core subjects was 150-300 and in optional ones, 25-120. The Indians would make up 15-25% of class; the rest are majorly Chinese and a mix of all others.

Faculty

6

  • The faculty-to-student ratio is very bad; to be honest, the university has very few. Of faculties in terms of students and the subject they are teaching, it’s influence is that the faculty has their only subject so if he does not teach properly, the student has the option of studying under him; faculty members do not assist in any way in finding part-time or full-time jobs; just every now and then, job fairs are done, which are just for the sake of showing. I have not been able to find any professor whom I would admire

Campus Life

6

  • The college campus is spread over the whole city of Durham. All the buildings are spread over different locations in Durham, which include the Teaching and Learning Centre, the Palatine Centre, the Old Business School, the Bill Bryson Library, the Waterside Business School, etc.The major clubs here include Jimmy Allens, Babylon, Fabius, Ozborns, etc.
  • The major attraction here is the Durham Cathedral.

Part Time Jobs

  • The minimum pay is 12.44 pounds per hour. Getting a job, say part-time or full-time, is really very difficult; you need to keep on applying and they keep on rejecting. We are allowed to work a maximum of 20 hours in a week in part-time and in full, we are allowed to work 40 hrs in a week. There are very few on-campus job opportunities, and one has to apply beforehand.
  • Mostly Indians prefer working in subway, Starbucks , domino’s, McDonald’s, etc its is very difficult to find part-time jobs; the only advantage you can get here is a referral If you have someone know working in a company, he can easily refer you for the job . Or else there are very few chances to get a part-time job in Durham. We need to apply online for all major brands like Tesco, sainsbury’s etc

Placement

4

  • I would say 10% or even less than that, student find it very hard to find a job or get placed in the big companies as such the degree does not do much in helping secure a good job only work experience matters if you have good previous work experience then you can easily get a job, the major companies here who the university says are jp Morgan and Morgan Stanley but reality is very different there very lil chance of any student getting selected

Accommodation

Off Campus
6

  • I found my accommodation on the college website itself, as I booked for a university-owned and controlled accommodation, Ustinov College. All the basic facilities are provided; the rooms are good enough as per the student. It also has a common area with leisure activities and a bar. Yaa, Ustinov is a good accommodation; it’s centrally located from the academic buildings and the city centre; my monthly rent for an en-suite is here 9250.
A good no. Of Indians live here, 30-35.

Exams

  • No exams are required other than IELTS; documents required are two letters of recommendation from your previous university and office, one statement of purpose stating why you want to get into that university, your resume/CV is required, and your secondary and higher secondary school marksheets are required (10th, 12th), and your bachelor’s degree is required; a passport is required too.

Fees

  • The fee structure is divided into 3 parts: first, at the end of term 1; second, at the end of term 2; and third, at the end of term 3. The same goes for college accommodation. Mine was 32750 for college and 9250 for accommodation in total.
On average, if spent meaningfully, 200 pounds a month would be enough to survive a month. The travel is mostly done on foot or one can also take a bus, which is just 1.5 pounds for a whole day or 1 pound for a single trip. Uber can also be taken but it’s very much costly, nearing to 8-10 pounds for a single normal trip of 1.5 miles

Scholarship

  • There’s a scholarship based on merit, which this year for finance was 9.5 CGPA. It had a deduction of 5000 pounds. One of my batchmates received it; he had a CGPA of 9.8 something. I don’t know of any other such financial aid provided; I think there are scholarships for the disabled ones but I don’t know of any such. Scholarship amounts are varied and can be 2000 to 7000 .
