Course Curriculum

10

  • I found the course (Economics) regressive and challenging, first year, first term was a lot like 12th grade, but very quickly it got challenging, so I had to ensure I stayed on top of my workload. It was a good mix of theory and practical work.
  • I usually had 3 lectures per day and 1 seminar; our contact hours per week were 27 hours.
  • Each class has around 160 students
  • Durham didn’t have a lot of Indian students. There were 10% Indian in the entire economics batch.

Admission Experience

  • I applied to the following universities:
    • University college London (BSc economics)
    • Durham University (Economics and business management with placement year)
    • Warwick University (BSC Economics)
    • University of Manchester (Politics, Philosophy and Economics)
    • Nottingham University (BA Economics)
  • I was accepted to all the above universities. I chose Durham because of its high rank and college system.
  • I chose Durham university because it gave me more flexibility with my course, like adding Business management with economics. It also allowed me to switch to a placement year. Moving from India, it was a smaller change going to a safer, closer-knit campus university rather than a big city.
  • I first chose my 5 UK universities, then wrote a single personal statement and submitted my applications on the UCAS Portal. Then I heard back one by one from each of the universities that I applied to.
  • I went for my undergraduate degree: requirements included TOEFL/IELTS, 96% in 12th boards, predicted Board marks during application (as it was a conditional offer), and maths was a requirement for economics.
  • I found the UCAS Portal was extremely simple, just one portal and one personal statement. No specific challenges; very self-explanatory.
  • I applied for Autumn (September) intake. It was viable for me, as I graduate from high school in May.
  • The admissions process started in January, when I started selecting which universities and which courses I wanted to apply to. By march I had made my final decision and sent my UCAS Application. By April I received conditional offers from universities. In July, once I got my 12th board marks, I received an offer of confirmation.

Faculty

  • For each lecture we had 2 lectures, and we were divided into smaller seminar groups where we had a separate seminar leader each.
  • I found the teaching very appropriate and helpful; we got a lot of support from our tutors and seminar leaders.
  • Yes, we have a separate careers department that helps with part-time, internship and graduate job searches.
  • My dissertation advisor was my most helpful mentor, as she dedicated a lot of time toward helping me reach my full potential.

Campus Life

10

  • We have one campus spread across County Durham.
  • We had a gym, library, and sports ground.
  • Lots of ongoing campus festivals, college days, formals, and balls. Summer ball is the best out of them.
  • Every possible society you can think of, from finance to ramen noodle society. One can take part in sports for their university or college; there are debates as well.

Part Time Jobs

  • A lot of students get part-time teaching assistant jobs, which are good for the CV and experience. Various colleges in Durham also have funded scholarships for research programmes.
  • You can work in marketing, welfare, student support, etc. on campus
  • Maximum hours allowed at 21 per week.
  • It is easy to secure these roles; you have to ensure that you have the experience and skills required.
  • You earn between £11 and £15 per hour doing a part-time job. It is not difficult, as there are a lot of part-time jobs available within the university as well as at bars, restaurants and cafés. For university part-time, you have to apply through online portals; there are events where stalls with various part-time roles advertise their jobs. Additionally, for restaurants, you go in person with a printed resume.
