The University of Birmingham offers two academic intakes each year, with September being the most popular among Indian applicants. As a member of the Russell Group, the university is competitive, with an estimated acceptance rate of around 13%. Prospective Indian students should familiarise themselves with course-specific entry requirements, application timelines, and the UK Student Visa process to navigate the competitive admissions process.

Key deadlines for the September 2026 intake include the 14 January 2026 UCAS equal consideration deadline for undergraduate programmes. Most postgraduate taught courses have an indicative application deadline of 3 July 2026, although some programmes may close earlier once all places are filled. The university issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) no earlier than six months before the course start date. Offer holders must meet separate deadlines for fee deposits and the submission of supporting documents.

Academic requirements vary by level. Indian undergraduates apply through UCAS and generally require a minimum of 80% or higher in Class XII. Postgraduate applicants apply via the university’s online portal and typically require a recognised bachelor’s degree with 55–60% marks (UK 2:1 equivalence). Required documents include academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, and evidence of English proficiency. In some cases, prior English qualifications may waive the standard language test requirement.

The university notes that early and complete applications increase the likelihood of timely decisions and smoother UK Student Visa processing.

INR conversions mentioned are approximate and based on prevailing exchange rates.

Key Intakes at University of Birmingham

The September intake at Birmingham University is the primary entry point for most Indian students for both UG and PG programs. The January intake is limited to few postgraduate taught courses. Indian applicants should plan according to the intake that aligns with their chosen programme.

University of Birmingham Acceptance Rate

Unlike some U.S. institutions, the University of Birmingham does not publish an official acceptance rate, but the approximate overall acceptance rate of the university is around 13 – 15 %, indicating high selectivity across programmes. This suggests that for every 100 applicants, roughly 13–15 receive offers, with undergraduate admissions generally more competitive than postgraduate taught ones.

Programme Type Approx. Acceptance Trend Competitiveness
Undergraduate ~12–14 % Highly competitive
Postgraduate Taught ~15–18 % Selective but slightly broader intake
Postgraduate Research ~20–25 % Moderately competitive
Foundation Programs ~25–30 % Least competitive

What This Means for Indian Applicants?

The selective nature of UoB highlights the need for strong academic records, well-crafted personal statements, and timely applications. Indian students are encouraged to submit complete documentation early, as delays can affect both admission decisions and subsequent UK Student Visa processing.

FAQs

Ques. If I do not meet the academic entry requirements (e.g., my Bachelor's percentage is below the 2:1 equivalent) for MSc Data Science, what are my options?

Ans. There is no formal foundation or pre-Master's pathway mentioned for this program. However, if your qualifications are non-standard or borderline, the university explicitly states: Contact the admissions department to discuss whether your application would still be considered. They review applications individually, taking into account relevant experience or other factors.

Ques. What are the English language requirements for MSc Data Science, and can my Class XII English score waive the need for IELTS?

Ans. The program requires IELTS 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in any band (or equivalents like TOEFL 88, PTE Academic 67, etc.).

For Indian students: A strong score in Standard XII English (Core/Elective/Functional) can often waive the need for IELTS/TOEFL/PTE.

Specifically:

  • For IELTS 6.5 equivalent: 80% in ISC/CBSE/Maharashtra boards, 75% in West Bengal, or 85% in other state boards.

If you don't meet this, you can take a pre-sessional English course (on-campus or online, small classes) as an alternative to retaking tests—this can satisfy a conditional offer.

  • Yes, I received a Global Student scholarship, which was a discount of 2000 GBP, so the tuition of mine was £25650 at last.
  • Not batch-mates, but friends in other majors received scholarships up to 10000 GBP since their courses were unpopular and seats were to be filled, mostly environmental courses.
  • A lot of students receive the £2000 discount with very few and exclusive classes of students that receive financial aid after displaying proper evidence.

Scholarship

  • Yes, I received a scholarship from the University of Birmingham, which is the Global Masters Scholarship. They give this scholarship to the specific country in the list, including India. The student needs to have more than 60% in the undergraduate, accept the full-time master's unconditional offer letter and pay 2,000 as a deposit. This scholarship is only for overseas students. I received a 2,000 pounds deduction from the 24,000 pounds fees payment.
  • I don't have many details on the average number of scholarships received by students each year.

  • I had received the Chancellor’s academic scholarship, which offers you a 40% discount but housing and other expenses will be on your own. We can seek university jobs like teaching assistant or research assistant to gain some income you need to be excellent in your studies and only then can you get this job. There are full scholarships as well; they are awarded to 3-5 students.

  • The Commonwealth Scholarship was a master's scholarship that was given to about 200 students each year for an amount of 3000 GBP. As I was born in India, this was automatically applied in my final offer, and i did not apply for it.

  • Yes, I received one scholarship. It was the University of Birmingham India Outstanding Achievement Scholarship. To apply for it, you have to write a letter stating why you should be awarded the scholarship and then a decision is made by the university. I received a £3,000 scholarship.
  • Yes, many students in my course got the scholarships. Universities offer a large number of scholarships for different levels of study and categorise them as per the countries.
  • A large number of students (in thousands) receive scholarships each year. The least amount awarded is £1,000.

  • Yes, I got a scholarship of £2,000. It was a region-based scholarship. It helped many students a lot; most of my friends received it. Fortunately, it has been increased to £5,000 due to the 125th Anniversary of the very first red-brick university, i.e., the University of Birmingham’s birth, and the university wishes to ease international students’ burden a little bit more.
