Course Curriculum

8

  • The course was theoretical but involved more critical thinking.
  • The most positive aspect was the classroom discussions.
  • The most negative aspect was having very few lectures for my course, LLM.
  • I had a maximum of 2-3 classes in a day, which were an hour each. The number of students differed every class, but usually 14 - 25 were in my class. There were about 4 Indian students in each seminar.

Admission Experience

  • I had applied to 3 UK universities
  • The colleges I applied to were Queen's University, Leicester University and the University of Birmingham
  • Queen's University - unconditional offer, University of Birmingham – conditional offer, Leicester University – waitlist
  • I received admission from Queen's University Belfast and the University of Birmingham
  • I did not receive a rejection from any universities
  • The University of Birmingham had a high QS ranking. I had a friend who previously studied at the University and said positive things about it. The city was central to travel to other cities. The modules offered for the LLM program were very interesting, which made me choose the University of Birmingham
  • I made the application online and got a conditional offer. I had to write the PTE exam, and once my scores met the criteria, I had to pay a deposit. This made the offer unconditional. Then I received the CAS letter.
  • The English requirement test was any one of these:
    • IELTS: Overall score of 6.5
    • TOEFL: 88 overall
    • PTE Academic: 67 overall
    • Cambridge English (Advanced): Minimum overall score of 176
  • Making the fee payment was challenging, as it needed to be done with Western Union or a foreign bank transfer. The application process was smooth.
  • I applied to the September intake as I heard it was the best intake to get into, as a larger number of students join during this time.
  • My application was accepted at the end of June 2022. Immediately after I applied for the PTE exam, I took it. Applied for my UK visa in August 2022 and left in September 2022, and arrived on time for welcome week.

Faculty

8

  • 1 lecturer for 14 - 25 students. Yes, as there are fewer students, there is a lot of time to interact with the lecturers
  • Practical experiences are very essential to secure a job, and the course content alone is not enough. The teaching methodology is very interactive and research-orientated.
  • No faculty member helped with the job search.
  • My introduction to the legal research faculty was great, as it was a new topic for me and they were able to break it down.

Campus Life

8

  • I am only aware of one campus.
  • We have a library, a Cafe - Starbucks, and a sports centre.
  • There are Christmas rides outside the Birmingham main library during the season, and the Birmingham Christmas market is also great.
  • For Law – There is a women's law society and the Birmingham Law society.
  • I was a part of the calligraphy society and dance society with the student union, which is called Guild of Students.

Part Time Jobs

  • The union bar in the Guild of Students offers jobs such as security or bartender, and there are also student ambassador job opportunities within the campus.
  • Most Indian students prefer working at restaurants or Primark.
  • I usually apply for part-time jobs through indeed or the university website. Students typically earn around 8 GBP - 10 GBP per hour part-time

Placement

6

  • About 30 % of students secure a job in 6 months.
  • The starting salary would be about 21,000 GBP to 30,000 GBP per year.
  • Students usually use company job portals or university job portals. My friend got a job with Goldman Sachs 3 months after she graduated
  • Jobs.ac.uk is a good place to apply for university jobs and legal jobs.
  • Very few of my batchmates got university placements, as it was extremely difficult to get one without UK experience.

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

  • Found my accommodation using Google
  • My rent was about 625 GBP with all bills included
  • I had no challenges; the process was easy
  • I stayed in Altura by Novel student, and it was a very good decision. The accommodation is very centrally located
  • My accommodation was 45 minutes' walk away from campus – it was one stop by train.
  • Most Indian students stay in Selly Oak

Exams

  • The documents required were:
    • Academic Transcripts: from my school and college
    • Provisional Degree Certificate: as my original degree certificate was not available/released
    • English Language Proficiency Proof: I wrote the PTE.
    • Personal Statement: Regarding why I wanted to do the LLM
    • References: Two academic references, which I got from my college professors, with the university letterhead.
    • We did not have any interviews.

Fees

  • The fees for the entire course were 24,000 GBP
  • I got a scholarship for 3,000 GBP, so I paid 21,000 GBP
  • I stayed in a private student accommodation, which cost 7,500 GBP per year
  • Fees were paid semester-wise
  • My monthly living cost was about 950 - 1000 GBP
    • Rent – 625 GBP
    • Transportation – 40 GBP
    • Groceries – 250 GBP
    • Other expenses – 50 GBP

Scholarship

  • I received the Commonwealth scholarship.
  • The Scholarship award amount was 3000 GBP.
  • Yes, my batchmates received different scholarships as well.
  • The Commonwealth Scholarship was a master's scholarship that was given to about 200 students each year for an amount of 3000 GBP. As I was born in India, this was automatically applied in my final offer, and i did not apply for it.
