Course Curriculum

6

  • The course is not that difficult, as it is more of an understanding-based course rather than cramming, which is followed in India. The way of teaching not only includes classes but also seminars where we have to discuss the topic taught in the last class and it helps us to understand the topic more in-depth and in a better way.
  • The positive aspects of my course are its job opportunities across different countries and the negative aspect of it is that it is not that helpful in India, as India still doesn't have international commercial law in full practice. Usually there are 6 classes scheduled in a week. No faculty members assist students in finding part-time or full-time jobs through their personal networks or references.

Admission Experience

  • I applied for the following university:
    • University of Birmingham—Shortlisted
  • I didn't apply to any other university as I was not having an option. Only UoB provides a 4+1 LLM Pathway for the 5-year law course in India. Hence, I only applied to this university and I got shortlisted. Due to the tie-up with Symbiosis Law School, I applied to this university and we were not having any other university that would save us 1 year.
  • I selected UoB because I did not have an option. Only UoB provides a 4+1 LLM Pathway for the 5-year law course in India. Hence, I only applied to this university and I got shortlisted. Secondly, I was also awarded various scholarships, which funded most of my tuition fees.
  • The admission process was very simple. Starting with the application form and then we have to wait until we receive our conditional offer. The English proficiency test was waived off; instead, 80+ marks were asked in our 12th CBSE/ICSE board exams.
  • I applied to the September 2024 intake and my major factor that influenced my decision for applying to this university was its good QS ranking and its alumni presence in the legal sector. Secondly, as there was a tie-up between the universities, it helped me to understand the University of Birmingham in a better way, as they visited our campus to clear all doubts we had before admission and provided us with great support.

Faculty

6

  • There are around 40 students in my class, out of which around 10 are Indians. I am not aware of the faculty-to-student ratio but yes, faculty give personal attention to students.
  • The teaching methodology includes classes and seminars where we have to discuss the topic taught in the last class and it helps us to understand the topic more in-depth and in a better way.

Campus Life

8

    • Dubai Campus
    • Shakespeare Institute, Stratford-upon-Avon, England.
    • Ningbo Joint Institute (Partnership), Ningbo, China.
  • The following facilities are present on the campus:
    • Libraries

    • Medical and Well-being Services

Part Time Jobs

  • At the University of Birmingham, the availability of TA, RA, or DA positions depends on the department and level of study. For postgraduate students, particularly those pursuing research degrees (e.g., PhD), securing these roles is more common.
  • On-Campus Jobs:
    • Library Assistant
    • Catering Staff
    • Student Ambassador
    • IT Support Assistant
    • Guild of Students Roles
    • Sports Facility Staff
    • maximum hours is 20 hours
    • it is very difficult to find a job due to large number of applicants
  • Students earn around 12 GBP per hour and it is very difficult to find a job here, as there are a lot of students applying for the same and most of the jobs ask for prior work experience in the same field, which we as international students don't have. Hence, we face difficulty in applying for the same. The process usually involves applying on the website of the recruiter or the place where we want to work at.
  • Then it is followed by an interview, which is kind of a deciding factor for the applicant. CV is also to be submitted at the time of the application. It is definitely not easy to get a part-time job in your initial months but by the end of December during Christmas time, there are a lot of job openings due to high demand.

Placement

8

  • At the University of Birmingham, around 85-90% of graduates secure employment or pursue further studies within 6 months of completing their course. Postgrad students, after completing their course, can expect salaries ranging from £30,000 to £40,000 per annum for specialised roles, with certain fields like law, finance, and engineering offering higher packages. The common placement methods are campus recruitment, internships, networking, online job portals, job fairs, and vacation schemes.
  • Major recruiters in law are:
    • Allen & Overy
    • Clifford Chance
    • McKinsey & Company
    • HSF
    • Latham and watkins
    • Pinsent Masons
    • Linklaters
    • Dentons

Accommodation

Off Campus
8

  • The university provided us with the list of accommodations to live at and was very useful. The monthly rent is 400 GBP and it includes a 5-person shared flat with a shared washroom and shared kitchen.
  • No challenges were there to find the accommodation, as it was a simple process. My accommodation is within the campus but still it takes 25 mins to walk to the classrooms, as the campus is huge.

Fees

  • Tuition fee for my course is around 24,120 GBP and I got a scholarship of approximately 13,000 GBP from the university itself, which reduced my tuition fee.
  • Additionally, University provides various options for accommodation ranging from 99 GBP per week to 240 GBP per week, depending on the luxury you want to live in.
  • The estimated monthly expenses for me are around 400-500 GBP on food, transportation, and other regular expenses, excluding rent.

Scholarship

  • Yes, I have received various scholarships from the University of Birmingham.
  • 1. Harding International Scholarship—It is the scholarship worth 5000 GBP granted by the University of Birmingham.
  • 2. Global Master's Scholarship—2000 GBP granted to every student studying in the UK for their master's degree.
  • 3. Symbiosis—UoB Discount—20% fee waiver for Symbiosis University students.
  • Around 25 students in total from all courses and fields this year received scholarships.
