MIT B.Tech Mechanical Engineering FAQs

Ques. Is MET mandatory for admission to B.Tech Mechanical Engineering at MIT Manipal, or can I use my JEE Main score?

Ans. MET (Manipal Entrance Test) is the primary and mandatory entrance exam for B.Tech admissions at MIT Manipal. JEE Main scores are not accepted for admission to MIT Manipal. You must appear for MET Phase 1 (April) or Phase 2 (May) to be eligible for counselling and seat allotment.

Ques. What is the actual placement scenario for Mechanical Engineering at MIT Manipal? Is it as good as CSE?

Ans. Mechanical Engineering placements at MIT Manipal are decent but not at par with CSE/IT branches. Core companies like Bosch, L&T, Tata Motors, Mahindra, and Volvo do recruit, but the number of core offers is limited. Many Mechanical students end up in IT/analytics roles. The approximate average package for Mechanical is Rs. 8-10 LPA, with a placement rate of around 70-75%. Students with strong CGPA and internship experience tend to get better core placements.

Ques. Can I switch branches from Mechanical Engineering to CSE or other branches after the first year?

Ans. Yes, MIT Manipal allows branch change at the beginning of Semester 3 (second year) based on first-year academic performance (CGPA) and availability of seats in the desired branch. However, branch change to high-demand branches like CSE is extremely competitive and typically requires a very high CGPA (usually 9.0+). It is not guaranteed and depends on the number of vacancies.

Ques. What are the hostel facilities like at MIT Manipal, and is hostel accommodation guaranteed for Mechanical Engineering students?

Ans. MIT Manipal has extensive hostel facilities on campus with both AC and Non-AC options, single and shared rooms. Hostel accommodation is generally available for first-year students, but it is not guaranteed for all years. The annual hostel cost ranges from approximately Rs. 1,13,500 to Rs. 1,90,000 depending on room type. Many students also opt for private PGs and apartments in Manipal town, which can be more economical.

Ques. What minor specializations are available for B.Tech Mechanical Engineering students at MIT Manipal?

Ans. B.Tech Mechanical Engineering students at MIT Manipal can opt for minor specializations in Product Design, Material Science and Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Business Management. These minors allow students to develop expertise in a specific sub-domain alongside their core Mechanical Engineering curriculum, enhancing their employability in specialized roles.

Ques. Is the Dual Degree program with Deakin University available for Mechanical Engineering, and what does it involve?

Ans. Yes, MIT Manipal offers a Dual Degree program specifically for Mechanical Engineering in partnership with Deakin University, Australia. Under this program, students complete the first 2 years of their B.Tech at MIT Manipal and then transfer to Deakin University to complete the remaining 2 years of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) program. Upon successful completion, students receive two globally recognized degrees – one from MIT Manipal and one from Deakin University. This program involves additional costs for studying in Australia and requires meeting Deakin University's academic and visa requirements.
