CBSE has started class 12 board exams on February 15, 2024. More than 16 Lakh students are expected to appear for CBSE Class 12 Exams this year. The exams will be continued till April 2, 2024, and each exam will be held in a single shift from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM.
Candidates appearing for CBSE Class 12 Exams 2024 must follow certain guidelines at their respective exam centers. The exam day guidelines are provided on your admit cards issued by the board. As per the guidelines, you must carry your admit card and school ID card to the exam center in each exam. Without the ID proof, no student will be allowed to enter the exam hall. CBSE has also stated that students must report to their respective exam centers at least half an hour before the exam time. This is to ensure timely distribution of answer sheets to the candidates. The invigilators will start distributing the answer sheets and question papers at 10:15 AM.

Apart from these guidelines, CBSE has also introduced some major changes for the 2023-24 session. An increase in competency-based questions, special exams for candidates participating in international events, and discontinuing the use of answer books having tables for Accountancy paper are some of the major updates for CBSE board exams 2024.

CBSE Class 12 Exam Day Guidelines
There are certain guidelines that are to be followed by students on exam day. These guidelines are specifically mentioned in CBSE Class 12 admit card released by the board. Students must abide by the following rules while appearing for their exams:
- They must reach the exam center at least 30 minutes before the exam commencement time. Candidates will not be allowed to enter the exam center after 15 minutes remaining to the exam time.
- Candidates must report to the exam center in proper school uniform and must carry their school ID card.
- They must also bring their admit card. Without an admit card, no student will be permitted to sit for the exam even if he/she carries a school ID card.
- Students will get the question papers 15 minutes before the time. They can utilize this time only for reading the question paper. No writing of answers will be allowed in this time period.
- Students must not write anything on their admit card and question paper (except their roll number on the question paper). Any other written details on the admit card or question paper will be considered an unfair practice.
- Candidates are not allowed to leave the examination hall 30 minutes before the exam end time.
- At the time of leaving the exam center, students can carry their question papers with them.
- Students must not carry any kind of prohibited items like electronic or bluetooth devices, study materials, smartwatches, mobile phones, etc. to the examination center.
- They are also not allowed to carry their personal belongings like bags inside the center.
These guidelines shall be strictly followed by students on exam day. Violation of the guidelines may lead to disciplinary actions against the students.
CBSE Class 12 Registration Guidelines 2024
The following are the key guidelines issued for CBSE Class 12 Exams 2024:
- No Subject Change in Class 12 - CBSE has clearly stated that students cannot change their subjects in Class 12. They will have to appear for the same subjects which they studied in class 11.
- Optional/Additional Subjects - Students must opt for the same optional or additional subject they filled out during their initial registration in class 11. The same subject shall be filled in the LOC form of class 12.
- No New Additional Subject in Class 12 - Students who have not studied an additional subject in Class 11 can not add that subject in Class 12.
- Subject Position - CBSE has also directed schools to carefully decide the position of the subject and upload accordingly. Once the LOC is submitted, they will not be allowed to change the subject position.
- Uploading of Documents - The photograph of the candidate uploaded in the LOC form should be clear and recent. Also, the date of birth of the candidate must match with the one mentioned in their class 10 certificate. Hence, schools must ensure to upload the correct DOB of their students.
Note: If any wrong or mismatched details are found in the details of a candidate, the board may reject the LOC form of the candidate. Such candidates may not be allowed to sit for the board exams.
CBSE Eligibility Criteria for Class 12 2024
CBSE has set some rules and guidelines for candidates appearing for class 12 board exams. Only those candidates who meet the following eligibility criteria can sit for CBSE Class 12 Exams 2024:
- Students must have completed the initial registration in Class 11 and must have the registration card with them.
- Students must also register in class 12 again. The details provided at the time of class 12 registration shall be the same as mentioned in the class 11 registration card.
- Candidates must have passed Class 11 from CBSE or any other board recognized by CBSE.
- Students must have attained a minimum of 75% attendance in class 12 till January 2024.
- Any specific age limit is not set by CBSE for class 12 exams. However, generally, the minimum age of candidates is 17 years.
Eligibility Criteria for Private Candidates
Private candidates can also appear for CBSE Class 12 Exams 2024 if they meet the following criteria:
- Candidates who failed in class 12 in the previous year and wish to reappear for the exams can appear as private candidates.
- Female candidates who are residents of NCT of Delhi, and have passed class 10 (at least 2 years before) can also appear for class 12 exams.
- Physically handicapped candidates who have passed class 10 at least 2 years before.
CBSE Attendance Rules for Class 12 2024
As per CBSE, candidates appearing for class 12 board examinations must have attained a minimum of 75% attendance in class 12. Students with less than 75% attendance are not eligible for CBSE Class 12 Exams 2024.
However, under certain circumstances, CBSE may allow students with less than the minimum required attendance to appear for the exam. The shortage of attendance will be considered only if students have one of the following valid reasons:
- In case of prolonged illness, students’ attendance may be considered only upon producing a valid medical certificate.
- Any serious emergency, including loss of father/mother or any such mishappening leading to a student’s absence from school for a long time.
- Student participation in sports at the national or international level organized or recognized by CBSE/SGFI.
If a student fails to achieve the minimum required attendance for any of the above reasons, he/she will still be eligible for the class 12 board examinations.

Ministry of Education, Government of India has launched New Curriculum Framework for School Education on August 23, 2023. NCF 2023 in sync with NEP 2020 introduces several big changes in the current school education system in India majorly affecting board examinations from the year 2024 onwards.

Major Changes as per NCF 2023
The key highlights of NCF for School Education 2023 are as follows:
- From 2024 onwards, board examinations will be held twice a year. The best out of the two scores will be considered for the final result.
- Board exams will major be framed to assess the understanding of students rather than memorisation.
- The number of compulsory subjects has been increased for Classes 9 to 12. Students of Class 9 and 10 will study 7 compulsory subjects and for Class 11 and 12 the number of compulsory subjects is increased to 6.
- It will be mandatory for Class 11 and 12 students to study 2 languages. One of these languages shall be an Indian Language.
- New textbooks will be designed for 2024 session based on the latest pattern for board exams.
- In future, ‘On Demand’ exams will be introduced to give students flexibility to choose when they wish to appear for the exam.
- Board exam question paper developers and evaluators will have to first complete the University-Certified Courses to take up this responsibility.
Subject Guidelines as per NCF 2023
One of the major changes that NEP 2020 will bring to School Education is the freedom to choose subject combinations in Class 11 and 12 without stream restrictions. Students will be allowed to choose different combinations of subjects listed under 4 groups.
