CBSE class 12 Physics syllabus 2024-25 has been released on the official website. The syllabus is divided into two categories that are theory and practical. 70 marks are allocated for the theory paper and the rest 30 marks are allocated for the practical paper. The 30 marks are divided into four components such as Experiments, Practical Record, Investigatory Project and VIVA & Activities. The theory paper comprises a total of nine units. These units consist of chapters and subchapters.

CBSE Class 12 Physics Practical Syllabus

The Class 12th Physics syllabus includes 30 marks for Practicals. CBSE class 12th Physics practical syllabus of Section A and B are as follows:

  • Determine the resistivity of 2 or 3 wires by plotting a graph for potential difference versus current.
  • To find the resistance of a given wire or standard resistor using a metre bridge.
  • To verify the laws of combination (series) of resistances using a metre bridge. OR To verify the laws of combination (parallel) of resistances using a metre bridge.
  • To determine the resistance of a galvanometer by the half-deflection method and to find its figure of merit.
  • To convert the given galvanometer (of known resistance and figure of merit) into a voltmeter of the desired range and to verify the same. OR To convert the given galvanometer (of known resistance and figure of merit) into an ammeter of the desired range and to verify the same.
  • To find the frequency of AC mains with a sonometer.
  • To find the value of v for different values of u in the case of a concave mirror and to find the focal length.
  • To find the focal length of a convex mirror, using a convex lens.
  • To find the focal length of a convex lens by plotting graphs between u and v or between 1/u and 1/v.
  • To find the focal length of a concave lens, using a convex lens.
  • To determine the angle of minimum deviation for a given prism by plotting a graph between the angle of incidence and the angle of deviation.
  • To determine the refractive index of a glass slab using a travelling microscope.
  • To find the refractive index of a liquid using a convex lens and plane mirror.
  • To find the refractive index of a liquid using a concave mirror and a plane mirror.
  • To draw the I-V characteristic curve for a p-n junction diode in forward and reverse bias.
Activities Activities
  • To measure the resistance and impedance of an inductor with or without iron core.
  • To measure resistance, voltage (AC/DC), current (AC) and check continuity of a given circuit using a multimeter.
  • To assemble a household circuit comprising three bulbs, three (on/off) switches, a fuse and a power source.
  • To assemble the components of a given electrical circuit.
  • To study the variation in potential drop with length of a wire for a steady current.
  • To draw the diagram of a given open circuit comprising at least a battery, resistor/rheostat, key, ammeter and voltmeter. Mark the components that are not connected in proper order and correct the circuit and also the circuit diagram.
  • To identify a diode, an LED, a resistor and a capacitor from a mixed collection of such items.
  • Use a multimeter to see the unidirectional flow of current in case of a diode and an LED and check whether a given electronic component (e.g., diode) is in working order.
  • To study the effect of intensity of light (by varying distance of the source) on an LDR.
  • To observe refraction and lateral deviation of a beam of light incident obliquely on a glass slab.
  • To observe diffraction of light due to a thin slit.
  • To study the nature and size of the image formed by a (i) convex lens, or (ii) concave mirror, on a screen by using a candle and a screen (for different distances of the candle from the lens/mirror).
  • To obtain a lens combination with the specified focal length by using two lenses from the given set of lenses

Physics question papers mostly focus on numerical questions so practice is the key. Derivations are the most important for this paper. Practising derivations regularly can help you get a good score in the exam. Some of the most important derivatives are Gauss’s Law application, Magnetic Field on the Axis of Circular Coil, Astronomical Telescope/Compound Microscope, proving Snell’s law using Huygens principle and Nuclear density is independent of ‘A’.

What chapters should be studied first in Physics?

You need to cover all the chapters thoroughly but you can determine the sequence as per your convenience. You can start with some chapters like Ray Optics, Wave Optics, AC,em waves, Electrostatics, Magnetism and Current Electricity. Then you need to cover other chapters as well. This sequence will help you to complete the subject effectively in less time.

Which are the chapters I need to focus more on?

Covering the whole syllabus is important to get a good score but some of the chapters need your attention more. You need to focus on some most important topics like Gauss theorem, Electric flux, Parallel Plate Capacitor, Drift Velocity, Kirchoff’s law, Force between parallel wires, Magnetic properties of material, Resonance of series LCR circuit, Refraction through prism, Lens maker formula, Compound microscope & telescope and and Hydrogen spectrum. Questions are asked repeatedly from these chapters so you need to focus on these chapters more. You are not advised to skip any of the chapters from the updated syllabus.

When and how to practise previous years questions?

Once you cover the entire syllabus start your revision. You should start practising PYQs after the detailed revision. You can solve PYQs online or you can follow any practice book for it. When solving PYQs, set an alarm to complete the paper within time. Analysing each topic in past papers is important

How many questions can I expect from Optics?

For the optics section in the CBSE class 12th, CBSE has allotted 18 marks. The number of questions has not been declared but there will be two chapters. These chapters are Chapter 9 - Ray Optics and Optical Instruments, and Chapter 10 - Wave Optics.
