2026 Status: 2026 scheduled cycle completed. HITSEEE was scheduled for April 27–May 2, counselling for May 13–20, and classes from July 2026.

Types of Admission Routes in India

  1. National-Level Entrance Examination: NATA and JEE Main Paper 2A are the two principal architecture aptitude routes. The IIT B.Arch route additionally requires qualifying for JEE Advanced and passing AAT.
  2. State-Level Counselling: States may prepare B.Arch merit/rank lists using valid NATA/JEE scores instead of holding a separate architecture entrance test. Maharashtra CAP is one current B.Arch centralised admission route.
  3. Consortium/Private-College Counselling: COMEDK does not conduct a separate B.Arch entrance examination in 2026; its architecture counselling uses NATA 2025/2026 or JEE Main 2026 Paper 2A scores, with the better score considered where both are submitted.
  4. University/Institute-Level Application or Test: Some universities require a separate institutional application and may conduct an institute test. HITS uses HITSEEE but also requires a valid NATA/JEE architecture score for B.Arch.
  5. Central Counselling: JEE Main Paper 2A candidates compete for participating NIT+/SPA seats through the central seat-allocation process; IIT B.Arch candidates must qualify for JEE Advanced and AAT before B.Arch choices can be considered.

Ques. Can I get direct B.Arch admission without NATA or JEE?

Ans. Pure Class 12 merit/direct admission without the prescribed architecture aptitude-test route should not be treated as the normal route to a recognised B.Arch programme. CoA regulations require an architecture aptitude test, while institutional vacant-seat admissions must still follow the applicable regulatory/admission rules.

Ques. What is the average starting salary after B.Arch in India?

Ans. A realistic early-career range is approximately INR 2.5 LPA–INR 5 LPA, with BIM, sustainability, large AEC consulting and specialised digital-design roles sometimes paying more. Current salary data shows junior architect and architectural designer averages around the lower end of this range, so unusually high campus packages should not be treated as normal fresher salaries.

Ques. Which B.Arch specialisations or focus areas are popular?

Ans. Sustainable architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, interior/spatial design, housing, building management and urban planning are common areas of interest. At the undergraduate level, many institutions offer these as studios/electives rather than awarding a differently titled B.Arch specialisation.

Ques. B.Arch or B.Planning – which course should I choose?

Ans. Choose B.Arch if you are mainly interested in building design, architectural studios, construction technology and professional architecture. B.Planning is more focused on cities, land use, transport, regional development, infrastructure and planning policy.

Ques. What is the difference between B.Arch and B.Tech Civil Engineering?

Ans. B.Arch is design- and studio-intensive and prepares students for architectural practice, building design and related built-environment careers. Civil Engineering focuses more heavily on engineering analysis, structures, construction, infrastructure and technical execution. In India, use of the professional title Architect requires registration with the Council of Architecture.

Ques. What can I study after B.Arch?

Ans. Common options include M.Arch, M.Plan, M.Des, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Sustainable Built Environment, Construction/Real Estate Management and an MBA. Students interested in research or academics can later progress to doctoral study.

B.Arch Admission Process

  • Qualifying Examination: 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics plus an approved third subject with at least 45% aggregate, or pass a 10+3 diploma with Mathematics and at least 45% aggregate. Individual institutions may prescribe a higher minimum.
  • Eligible Academic Background: The subject combination matters more than the stream label. Physics and mathematics must be present for the Class 12 route.
  • Entrance Examination: Take NATA or JEE Main Paper 2A according to the target college. IIT B.Arch requires the JEE Advanced + AAT route.
  • Result/Rank: Download the scorecard and check the relevant university, state, consortium or central merit/rank procedure.
  • Application/Counselling: Register separately for JoSAA/CSAB, state CAP, consortium counselling or the university admission process wherever required.
  • Document Verification: Common documents include Class 10 and 12/diploma marksheets, entrance scorecards, identity proof, photographs and category/domicile certificates where applicable. COMEDK's 2026 architecture process, for example, requires academic records and the relevant NATA/JEE scorecard.
  • Seat Confirmation: Accept the allotted seat within the notified deadline and pay the applicable admission/seat-acceptance fee.
  • Merit/Direct Admission: Pure Class 12 merit admission without a qualifying architecture aptitude-test route is generally not the standard route for a recognised B.Arch. After CAP rounds, institutional vacant seats may be filled under applicable rules using valid NATA scores; NATA Phase 2 in 2026 was specifically provided for such vacant seats.
Three Myths Busted
  • Myth: Chemistry is compulsory for every B.Arch applicant. Physics and Mathematics are compulsory, but the third approved subject may also be Biology, Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering Graphics, Business Studies and specified alternatives.
  • Myth: NATA is compulsory for every B.Arch college. NATA is a major route, but JEE Main Paper 2A is used for NITs, SPAs and other participating institutions; IIT B.Arch admission uses JEE Advanced followed by AAT.
  • Myth: Class 12 marks alone are enough for a recognised B.Arch seat. Architecture admission requires a valid architecture aptitude-test route. Class 12/diploma marks may also be used in eligibility or merit preparation.

Top B.Arch. Colleges in India

Top Colleges Total Course Fee
SPA New Delhi INR 7.74 Lakh
IITR Roorkee INR 14.13 Lakh
IIT Kharagpur INR 14.73 Lakh

Ques. What is the duration of B.Arch in India?

Ans. B.Arch is a 5-year undergraduate professional programme spread across 10 semesters. The prescribed structure includes approximately one semester/six months of practical training, generally during the 8th or 9th semester.

Ques. What is the B.Arch eligibility criteria for 2026-27?

Ans. Candidates need 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects plus one approved third subject, with at least 45% aggregate. A 10+3 diploma with Mathematics and 45% aggregate is also accepted under the current CoA rule. Colleges may set a higher eligibility threshold.

Ques. Is Chemistry compulsory for B.Arch admission in 2026?

Ans. No. Physics and Mathematics are compulsory for the 10+2 route, but the third subject can be Chemistry, Biology, Technical Vocational, Computer Science, Information Technology, Informatics Practices, Engineering Graphics or Business Studies.

Ques. Can a Commerce student apply for B.Arch?

Ans. The stream label does not decide eligibility. A Commerce student can qualify only when the Class 12 combination includes Physics and Mathematics along with an approved third subject such as Business Studies. A standard Commerce combination without Physics is not eligible through the 10+2 route.

Ques. Can diploma students apply for B.Arch?

Ans. Yes. A candidate who passes a 10+3 diploma with Mathematics as a compulsory subject and at least 45% aggregate meets the basic CoA academic eligibility. The applicable architecture aptitude test and admission authority requirements must also be satisfied.

Ques. Is NATA compulsory for B.Arch?

Ans. Not for every institution. NATA is the main route for many universities and state/private colleges, while NITs, SPAs and participating centrally funded institutes commonly use JEE Main Paper 2A. IIT B.Arch admission follows JEE Advanced plus AAT.

FAQ’s

Ques. What is a good NATA score for B.Arch admission?

Ans. There is no single “good score” valid for every college. NATA 2026 Phase 1 used percentile-based scoring, and admission authorities can prepare their own merit lists using the applicable score methodology. A higher score/percentile improves competitiveness, but actual cut-offs depend on the college, category, state rules and applicant pool.

Ques. What JEE Main rank or percentile is required for B.Arch?

Ans. There is no universal safe rank. Closing ranks differ for each NIT/SPA or participating institution and vary by category, seat pool and counselling round. Students should compare their JEE Main Paper 2A rank with the current round-wise seat-allotment cut-offs rather than relying on one national benchmark.

Ques. Is JEE Main Paper 1 enough for B.Arch admission?

Ans. For the normal NIT/SPA B.Arch route, JEE Main Paper 2A is the relevant architecture paper. The IIT route is different: candidates first qualify through the JEE Main/JEE Advanced pathway, must qualify JEE Advanced and then pass AAT before applying for an IIT B.Arch seat through JoSAA.

Ques. Which IITs offer B.Arch in 2026?

Ans. The JEE Advanced 2026 information brochure lists IIT (BHU) Varanasi, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee as the IITs offering B.Arch. Applicants must pass AAT after qualifying JEE Advanced.

Ques. Can a B.Arch graduate work abroad, and what foreign package can be expected?

Ans. Yes, B.Arch graduates can apply for overseas architecture, BIM, design, visualisation and built-environment roles or pursue a master’s abroad. There is no reliable single “foreign package”: pay varies substantially by country, city, employer, experience, portfolio, local living costs and professional-registration rules. A qualification from India does not automatically provide professional architect registration in another country.

Ques. Do I need strong drawing skills before joining B.Arch?

Ans. Advanced professional drawing skills are not expected on Day 1, but visualisation, observation and design aptitude are important. NATA 2026 itself assesses drawing/composition, visual reasoning, design sensitivity, geometry and related aptitude, so students should be comfortable developing these skills.

Ques. Can I use the title “Architect” immediately after completing B.Arch?

Ans. Completing a recognised architecture qualification is an essential academic step, but a person wishing to practise using the title Architect in India must be registered with the Council of Architecture under the applicable Architects Act framework.

Faculties are very understanding and helpful, we also have mentor menti meetings conducted for students for counseling. Starting it was difficult to approach faculties but now we are very comfortable with them since the time passed and we got to know them. Shrikant Sir, Neha Maam, Kuldeep Sir, Shweta Raut Ma'am are the faculties which i like as they are very approachable and makes us feel like home . Sometimes some Visiting faculties are not understanding making us difficult to explain our concepts .Some students get a backlog in history of architecture subject, so I feel it's very tough as we have to study a lot.

Course Curriculum Overview

The workshops conducted here gives us hands on exposure which makes the course fun, knowledgeable and interesting. We also work in group so it's very interesting to know each others perspectives We get sufficient time to study for our exams and to make portfolios. I feel history of architecture subject has too much to be studied which makes us difficult to learn all concepts

The exam procedure is we'll be having two CAT assessment, model exam and semester exam. The difficulty of the question paper will be moderate whereas mostly all students pass, just 1-2 students may fail. The exams are only upon the syllabus.

Faculties and students relationship is really good and interactive. Faculties clear our doubt whenever we ask before or after lectures. They give us more ideas and suggestions for us to understand the topics. Our exams are conducted before our semister. Exams are sometimes hard or good it depends how much we have studied.

Course Curriculum Overview

I choose this course because I want to learn architecture deeply and also I was interested to learn. This course prepares for us by giving real world examples and applications which is useful for further academics. The frequency and timings for exams have kept enough to understand the questions and write the answers.

Fees and Financial Aid

The year wise fee payment structure is split into two semester- july sem and january sem. The july sen is usually called the odd semester and the jan one is called the even semester. The institution fees during the odd semester (july) is usually more than that for even semesters. the institute fees are around 93000 for the odd sem and around 64000 during the even sem (except for the first sem for which the institute fees is 1.22 lakh. And this is for general, open ews, iccr and related categories. For SC, ST and PWD students, they need to pay institute fees of about 33000 - 27000 (except for the first sem, you need to pay 60000 including the one time fees)

Faculty

the faculty members make their own course plans- that includes when they're gonna teach what and how they're gonna do it. Some teachers only consider written exams for grading while others conduct all the exams for grading through speaking assessments. Some teachers take us on trips while others only conduct lectures. It varies from teacher to teacher
