What are the benefits of a GNM Nursing?

GNM Nursing course provides many benefits to students and graduates alike. You can check some of the top advantages below.

  • High Demand: Skilled nurses are always in demand throughout India, so GNM graduates are highly desirable to fulfill healthcare needs. At present, India has only 1.9 nurses per 1,000 people, far below the WHO’s recommended ratio of 3 per 1,000.
  • Variety of Career Opportunities: GNM leads to career opportunities such as staff nurse, community health nurse, or clinical care nurse in hospitals, clinics, and community health centres. An estimated 70,000–100,000 Indian nurses migrated overseas last year and demand is set to increase 15–30% this year
  • Brief Duration of the Course: Being less than full-time courses like Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSc Nursing), it gets you into a career earlier.
  • Strong Practical Exposure: Strong clinical training and internships guarantee you develop actual nursing skills.
  • Government Job Opportunities: Government medical institutes and hospitals hire GNM nurses with handsome salaries and employment benefits.

What is the eligibility criteria for GNM nursing?

The Indian Nursing Council sets the GNM eligibility criteria for GNM nursing courses in India. The eligibility for different colleges can vary, but the overall eligibility criteria remain the same. You can check the GNM Nursing eligibility criteria below.

  • The eligibility criteria for Indian Nursing Council (INC)-approved General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) courses may vary slightly by college, but the core requirements are:
  • Must have passed Class 12 with English and secured at least 40% marks overall and in English individually (from any recognised board, including NIOS or a State Open School).
  • Candidates with Class 12 in the vocational ANM course (recognised by INC) with English and 40% marks are also eligible.
  • Class 12 (CBSE) vocational stream in healthcare science with English and 40% marks is accepted.
  • Registered ANMs with a passing mark are eligible.
  • Age should be between 17 to 35 years at the time of admission.
  • Candidates must be medically fit.
  • SC, ST, and PwD candidates get reservations as per the respective state government policies.

What is the admission process for GNM Nursing?

The GNM admission process in India is handled by the state governments themselves, and it is state-dependent. While entrance exams are conducted for shortlisting the candidates in most states, there are others that provide admission based on Class 12 marks through a merit list. State-level dedicated authorities handle this process in every state.

States like Kerala, Punjab, and Odisha typically provide admission based on merit, whereas states like Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Uttarakhand hold state-level entrance exams like Maharashtra GNM CET, WB ANM-GNM CET, and Uttarakhand Nursing Exam, respectively.

In order to get admitted, the deserving candidates should first confirm if their state is entrance- or merit-based. For merit-based admission, the students can directly apply to the colleges and wait for the merit list. For entrance-based admission, they should apply for the exam, prepare for it, and then appear for it.

Once the exam results or merit list is announced, candidates have to participate in the counselling or seat allotment process. Seats are allocated according to their ranks or merit, and selected candidates can accept the allotment by paying the set fees within the specified time.

GNM Nursing Course: Entrance Exams and Admission Criteria

In India, the admission process for the General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) course varies from state to state. Some states admit students based on entrance exams, while others offer admission purely on the basis of Class 12 merit. Each state has its own governing body or council that oversees the admission process.

GNM Nursing: FAQs

Ques. Can I join GNM Nursing after Class 10?

Ans. No, you cannot pursue a General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) course after Class 10. The minimum eligibility requirement is completion of Class 12 from a recognised board with at least 40% aggregate marks. Candidates should preferably have a science background (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology), although students from the Arts stream with English as a core subject are also eligible in many states. So, focus on clearing Class 11 and 12 with good marks to apply for GNM.

Ques. Can I do an anaesthesia course after GNM Nursing?

Ans. Yes, after completing GNM, you can pursue diploma or certificate courses in Anesthesiology, such as Diploma in Anaesthesia or Operation Theatre Technology. This specialization will enhance your profile and open up roles like Anaesthesia Technician or OT Nurse, where you assist doctors during surgeries, monitor patient vitals, and ensure safety when administering anaesthesia.

Ques. How should I prepare for the GNM Nursing course?

Ans. Preparation for GNM requires dedication and time management. Start by building a strong foundation in subjects like Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, and Nutrition. Actively participate in clinical postings, hospital internships, and simulation labs to develop practical skills. Use standard reference books, online lectures, previous exam papers, and nursing question banks to strengthen your theory. Regular revision and group discussions can also be very effective.

Ques. Is NEET required for GNM Nursing?

Ans. No, NEET is not mandatory for GNM admission. GNM is a diploma-level nursing course and admission is typically conducted by state nursing councils or health departments through entrance exams or direct merit-based admission. NEET is usually required only for degree-level medical programs like MBBS, BDS, BSc Nursing, etc.

Ques. Is GNM Nursing accepted by UK NARIC (now UK ENIC)?

Ans. Yes, the GNM qualification is usually recognized by UK ENIC (formerly UK NARIC), which evaluates overseas qualifications for UK equivalency. However, if you want to work as a nurse in the United Kingdom, you must also meet the eligibility set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). This may include taking the Occupational English Test (OET), clearing the CBT (Computer Based Test), and completing an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).

Ques. What is the duration of the GNM Nursing course?

Ans. The GNM course usually takes 3 years of academic study plus 6 months of compulsory internship training. During this time, students are trained in various disciplines such as medical-surgical nursing, pediatric nursing, mental health nursing, community health, and midwifery.

Ques. Can Arts stream students apply for GNM Nursing?

Ans. Yes, students from the Arts stream can apply if they have studied English as a core subject in Class 12 and have scored at least 40% marks in aggregate from a recognised board. However, candidates with a science background are usually given preference during admission.

Ques. What is the age limit for GNM Nursing admission?

Ans. The minimum age for admission is 17 years and the maximum age is generally 35 years at the time of admission. Some states or institutes may have slightly different age criteria, so it’s always advisable to check the specific guidelines of the respective state nursing council.

Ques. Can I open my own clinic after GNM Nursing?

Ans. No, GNM-qualified nurses are not legally permitted to run their own clinic or prescribe medications independently. They can work under registered medical practitioners or in hospitals, clinics, NGOs, and community health centres. To practice independently, higher qualifications like BSc Nursing and registration as a Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife (RNRM) with the Indian Nursing Council are required.

Ques. What are the job opportunities abroad after GNM Nursing?

Ans. GNM graduates can work as staff nurses or care assistants in countries like the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates after clearing their licensing exams (like the NCLEX for the US/Canada or NMC registration process for the UK). Some countries may require GNM nurses to first complete a bridging course or gain local experience before becoming eligible to practice as registered nurses.

Faculty

The faculty of jamia hamdard University is ok-ok. Some are very good and some are just disgusting.. In my case faculty-student relationship was good.. because my course faculty was very helpful and supportive. Whenever I got some queries they always help in a good manner. The most favourite faculty for me was my anatomy teacher, she was not just my teacher she was also the incharge of my admission. As we know we get some problems during admission process and at that time we just a good faculty to make us understand and she was the one who literally help me out with these problems. Like other colleges the exam pattern and timings is same but as we know there are some regular tests which happend every other day or sometimes daily in case of examination.

Fees and Financial Aid

The year-wise fees for my course (DGNM) is around 1.25 lakh, although they show 65,000 in their prospectus but after getting admission they add charges like dress, transport in case of internship which start in 2 or 3rd year they charge it's fees from first year and the course, library, campus, security charges.. these all charges together make 1at year fee around 1.25 lakh. Tution fee is 65000 Admission fee is 1500 (one time) There are some scholarships as well which you will get in 2nd year based on your performance attendance etc but it will just cost around 10k to 15k only. Well this was my experience of my course. Ho you find your answers in this paragraph and rest you will get to know at the time of admission.

The faculty is always there for the students and helps students in any need. All the faculties were good in there on way, always there for the students but i would like to give a special thanks to Maam Premo Devi vice principal of Apollo school of Nursing without her help it would have not been easy for us and all the students of our batch is really grateful and thankful to her. Thanks to her we were able to pass with no back paper... There is no particular faculty that I don't like. Everyone was really helpful and loving.. There is a total of 3 exams(1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year) and its different for every student as far how they study and how they appear in the exam. Failing in exam depends upon the students but in our batch the record is really less, plus we get a chance to appear for supplemental exam.

Course Curriculum Overview

The reason why I choose this field was because of my mother as she was a nurse as well and also I was thinking very hard about what to do after my school and right at that moment I got this opportunity so I thought let's not regret anything later. We had a lot of practical and theoretical discussions about everything soo I think it made us pretty confident about our skills and we were able to use everything in our internship too. As for the teaching methods I think the college or the institution can do better in hiring better or experienced candidates/teachers because the students need to learn and understand what the teacher is teaching .The exams would last for 3 hours in which we had to finish writing our exams, which was very hard because the answers were Soo long and we had to finish writing them in just 3 hours . Soo yes I think it was difficult but I have no regrets and I think I did great in my exams .

Faculty

The number of students were pretty large than of the faculties the student and faculty ratio used to be 5:70 so i think is pretty bad. Some of the faculty members were very nice and sweet but some of them were strict and hard on the students which is pretty reasonable and understandable as a teacher you need to be strict sometimes. Our Principal and one of the teacher named Miss Reena were Soo good to us and we got to learn a lot from them. Always grateful for what they've done for us As for the exams they were pretty tough. Nursing exams are never easy , but I tried my best to study and I think I did well in exams. We used to have our exams around late October to early November. I think one third of the students would fail the exams but we had this thing called supplementary exams which you can give later for the subject you failed which I think is a good aid .

The Faculty and Students Ratio was-30:2. Maximum Of The Faculties are very Co-operative and approachable to students. The Faculty member I liked Name,Mrs.Meena Kanipakam for her outstanding teaching skills. The Faculties I Dislike Names are Mrs.Priyanka and Mrs,Vijayalakhsmi for their partiality among students. And also they are not at all properly skilled to teach students. In this 3 years course ,there was 3 board exam and 3 internal assessment exams.Very Few students Falied in that.80%of the passed in all the exams,In final year luckily every students got pass marks. The course curriculum is 100%relevent.
