The LLM degree in India can be pursued after completion of a 3-year LLB or 5-year integrated LLB. An LLM is for those law graduates who wish to gain advanced knowledge in a specific area of law, strengthen their legal research and analytical skills, and build careers in litigation, corporate law, academia, the judiciary, policy-making, arbitration, or international organisations.

In India, both 1-year and 2-year LLM programmes are being offered. NLUs and several private universities usually offer 1-year LLM degrees, while state/public universities offer mostly 2-year LLM programmes.

Most Common Route for LLM Admission in India

The most common route for admission to an LLM programme is via an entrance exam followed by the counselling process.

LL.B. completion - Entrance examination – Merit rank - Counselling or university registration - Document verification - Seat allotment

CLAT PG is the most common route for admission to an LLM programme at participating NLUs. It is also important to note that CLAT PG is not compulsory for every LLM college in India, as NLU Delhi uses AILET, while Delhi University and several other participating universities use CUET PG or their respective postgraduate admission systems.

LLM Eligibility Criteria in India

As per the BCI, students must have completed a 3-year LLB or 5-year LLB or law degree recognised as equivalent to an LLB. Most of the universities require approx. 45%-55% aggregate marks in the qualifying law degree.

For CLAT PG, students must hold an LL.B. or equivalent qualification with at least 50% marks. The minimum is 45% for SC, ST and PwD candidates. CLAT PG does not prescribe an upper age limit. For NLU Delhi, it requires at least 50% marks in the LL.B. or equivalent degree for its 1-year LLM programme, with 45% required for SC, ST and PwD candidates.

Law students appearing in the final semester of their LLB degree can also apply to this programme by submitting their provisional degree certificates.

Ques. What is LLM?

Ans. The full form of LLM is Master of Laws. It is a postgraduate law degree, and one can study a variety of legal specialities with an LLM degree. An LLM degree provides an aspirant with a proper path that is in line with one's goals in pursuing a career in law.

Ques. Is a one-year LLM valid in India?

Ans. Yes, although the BCI is said to have scrapped the one-year LLM, the consortium of NLUs has challenged the notification of the BCI in the Supreme Court. So, till the SC officially issues any statement, the one-year LLM is valid.

Ques. What are the top universities in India offering a 1-year LLM programme?

Ans. Below are mentioned some of the top law colleges and universities in India offering a 1-year LLM programme:

  • National Law Schools such as Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Kolkata, Bhopal, Jodhpur, Raipur, Gandhinagar, etc.
  • Jindal Global Law School, Sonipat

  • Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai - LLM Course in Access to Justice
  • Azim Premji University, Bangalore - LLM Course in Law & Development
  • TERI University, New Delhi - LLM Course in Environment & Natural Resources Law

LLM Admission Process

Law graduates, by shortlisting specialisations, preferred cities, budget, university type and career objective, should first decide whether they want a 1-year or 2-year regular LLM programme.

The second most important step is the recognition of BCI, as it avoids enrolling in a distance or fully online LLM without official regulatory approval. A student targeting NLUs may primarily prepare for CLAT PG while also applying separately for AILET, CUET PG or university-level examinations. After clearing the entrance, students must wait for their score card or merit rank. Further application for the counselling process, followed by PI and seat allotment.

FAQ’s

Ques. Which is better: an LLM in India or an LLM abroad?

Ans. Both options are equally good, as it depends totally on the students' preferences. An Indian LLM may be more suitable for students planning careers in Indian litigation, judiciary preparation, domestic corporate law, Indian policy research or academia focused on Indian law.

Whereas an overseas LLM may provide international exposure, comparative legal education and access to global professional networks. It can be valuable for careers involving international arbitration, cross-border transactions, international organisations or foreign legal systems.

Ques. Are IELTS, TOEFL or work experience required for an LL.M. abroad?

Ans. The requirement for IELTS, TOEFL or work experience solely depends on the institution. As for Oxford, it accepts specified IELTS or TOEFL scores for its taught postgraduate law programmes, whereas Harvard generally requires TOEFL from applicants whose full-time legal education was not completed entirely in English and does not accept IELTS as a substitute.

Work experience is not compulsory for every overseas LLM programme. However, professional or research experience can strengthen an application by helping candidates present clearer academic and career goals. Applicants must check each university’s accepted tests, minimum scores, waiver policy and validity period rather than assuming one requirement applies everywhere.

Ques. Does an LLM abroad allow an Indian student to practise law in another country?

Ans. An overseas LLM does not automatically provide a licence to practise law. Professional qualification is controlled separately by the bar or legal regulator of each jurisdiction.

Ques. Which entrance exams are accepted for LLM admission in India?

Ans. Major entrance exams such as the following:

  • CLAT PG for participating National Law Universities (NLUs)
  • AILET LL.M. for NLU Delhi
  • CUET PG for participating central and other universities
  • University-level law entrance examinations
  • Merit-based admission in selected institutions

CLAT PG is not compulsory for every LLM college in India. It is primarily used by participating NLUs. Candidates applying to NLU Delhi, Delhi University or other independent institutions must follow their respective admission processes.

Campus Life

The campus ibfrastructure of Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, was no less than a dream palace, providing you with a destination to fulfill all your dreams and pursue your aim with head held high and chin up. The beautifully prepared campus and structured bifurcation of all sectors of education, made it easier to easily located places and have access to various resources available in the campus. The best location which I loved personally was the Campus Library, where you have a plethora of books available for you to read, refer, update and educate yourself.

Course Curriculum Overview

The primary thing that influnced me to pursue my Masters of Law (L.L.M.) with Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, was that the specialisation it offered was "Business Laws" and that is what is majorly needed as per the current market scenario. Business ALws majorly helped me get corporate ready, having the curriculum designed in a manner that all aspects of a corporate are mentioned, taught upon and got into our blood in a manner that we can never forget.

Fees and Financial Aid

The fee structure for an academic year on average is 2,75,000/- which includes the expense of hostel fee, tuition fee, moot court fee, printed material, sports facility, co-curricular, fest celebration, gym and all other resources of a university, however, it does not include mess fee. Every year the fee increases by approximately 10%. Not to mention that a security fee about of rs. 25,000 is returned in the end of the session. This fee, however, also includes the yearly subscription to 13 to 15 legal databases which are quite expensive in itself and requisite to have command over legal research and profession in general. Now coming to the part of scholarship and financial aid provided to students, yes certainly students can apply for the same under schemes runned by the government and if the student fulfils the required criteria as per the merit or income slabs, then they can avail it.

Course Curriculum Overview

Assignments and internships every semester are mandatory as a curriculum, let's check their real-world relevance. let me tell this before hand that the biggest tool of the good lawyer is the effective legal research they can offer and assignments require this from you. You are supposed to present new edges of the subjects and your possible contribution for the same which helps students in future be it in advocacy, judgeship or educator.

The other part is of internships, which in other words is real-world law interactions in courts, law chambers, firms and tribunals. What else can be relevant if not internships? Other than this workshops, legal aids, webinars and other guest lectures are frequently conducted keeping students in touch with their respective inspirations.

They have organised a fest in which a singer was there but this was organised in there Lucknow campus. They had also planned a resort trip for students with lots of activities. The library sections are totally different for every stream and specialisations. They have all books and journals with latest amendments and reforms. Not only teacher but students too have to go for biometric attendance to get accurate timings of students arrival in university and class. They have Wi-Fi so that students can do their research work and other academic works hassle free. They have arranged various seminars, webinars and moot court activities which is actually great to be attended and to participate for a law student. Other that this they have various sports and a huge play area separately for different sports.

Course Curriculum Overview

As I have completed my graduation from law field I decided to opt masters in same. I selected criminal specialisation because this university is providing all the subjects and topics in my course which I personally wanted to learn. The curriculum teaches us about the accurate reasons behind the crime rates and also provided their solutions which are really helpful. They also have an additional subject which is compulsory for all related to yoga but I personally feel that yoga must be a practical lesson and not just theoretical and that's the only sphere where I think university has to improve it and start practical classes for yoga too. We have our sessional exams which are of 30 marks after 2 months of our semester started and end term exams at the end of our semester

Course Curriculum Overview

The teaching method used by the teachers were quite efficient and the difficulty level sometimes where very hard and the teachers use those topics in each and every student is the student who is very poor at studies and answer for it. Basically, the teacher used to teach us how to be successful in life and give example related to it from our date to activities apart from law, Law basically wants student to be a social member through that the student can excel in life. So our law school teaches us the same.. The staff members, the area of improvement are indeed some of the major subject staff were quite changing their colleges at time to time. None of them were stick at one places. They also got better opportunities and they moved on from the college in between so these were quite a tough moment for the student, but the college administration did not let the students be down, the administration soon and very rapidly provided another and best teacher for the study of the students .

Campus Life

Overall, experience with my college was good, we had We have a technical fest like Jomar and many other festival, including humour and religious has to going and happening in every single month in the college. So apart from the range, the college provided all types of library, books, and magazines if any of the books which can't be available in the library, then it was made available to the student as and when it is required, many social groups were also present in the college

Ques. What is the average package of NLSIU Bangalore after doing an LLM?

● Top Answer By Anurag Bindra on 13 Oct 21

Ans. As most of these LLM graduates start off on the academic side of things, the pay grade is equivalent to that mandated by the UGC for all institutions in all states. You can get a job role for an Assistant Professor or the likes.  However, this does not stand true for Private Institutes that hire LLM graduates. They most times than not, do not pay more than the government institutes. But it all depends on your personal choice and the kind of work environment you would like to be in.  You can always consult with the immediate batches to understand the current standings on the placement front. Connect with them one-to-one and you might get a better and clearer idea of what to expect. Read more

Ques. How is LLM in Azim Premji University?

● Top Answer By Pravin Gaurav on 01 Feb 21

Ans. Azim Premji university is a private, non-profit institution with affiliation from UGC. It offers BA, MA, L.L.M, B.Sc. courses. A relative of mine who has been studying there has recommended the Institute based on its eligibility criteria, good placements and campus life.  Admission and eligibility criteria - To be eligible for admission, students are expected to have passed LLB courses of 3 year or 5 year duration followed by a written test and interview. The L.L.M course at Azim Premji university is lucrative for its course structure, which sets it apart from others.  A very significant part of the curriculum is the fieldwork component, which is a unique feature of APU. The fieldwork element plays a crucial role in providing a different perspective of the law, which students would have studied in theory. The typical structure of exams is also absent from the LLM course at APU. Instead, response papers are given to students with a deadline of 24 hours for submission of the paper. This new approach to the exam system at APU, helps the student to be more attentive towards the course curriculum, ensuring long term retention of the knowledge gained. The faculty of APU has been vouched for as one of the best, by many former students of the university, even considered better than other law schools of repute. Overall, APU is a very good university to do your LLM from. Everything at the university starting from campus life to placements will surely meet up to your expectations. This distinctive aspect of APU, makes it a different and a much better alternative to other universities following the traditional approach and also the National Law University(NLU).Read more
