Ques. Can a CAT Percentile Predictor really help me understand my chances for IIM admissions?
Ans. Yes, a CAT Percentile Predictor gives a near-accurate estimate of your expected percentile using historical trends and normalisation patterns. While it’s not a final score, it helps you understand your chances of getting shortlisted by top IIMs and lets you plan for WAT-PI preparation well in advance.
Ques. Do students find the CAT Percentile Predictor accurate after comparing it with real results?
Ans. Many students report that good percentile predictors closely match their final CAT scores, especially when inputs are entered correctly. While small variations may occur due to slot difficulty and normalisation, students find the predictor useful for early planning, reducing uncertainty, and estimating IIM call possibilities.
Ques. What common mistakes do students make while using the Percentile Predictor?
Ans. Students often enter inflated accuracy, forget to separate attempted and correct answers, or ignore the difficulty level of their exam slot. These errors lead to unrealistic percentile estimates. Providing honest and detailed inputs helps generate a far more accurate prediction, as confirmed by frequent users of these tools.
Ques. How early do students usually use the Percentile Predictor after the CAT exam?
Ans. Most students start using the CAT Percentile Predictor within 1–2 hours after the exam, once unofficial answer keys and memory-based questions are released. Early usage helps them estimate their expected percentile quickly, check college cut-offs, and plan their next steps, such as preparing documents for IIM WAT-PI rounds.
This table shows the estimated overall correct answer and the corresponding approximate raw score, and the percentile. This prediction table was made assuming a moderately difficult paper while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
| Target Percentile | Approx. correct answer needed | Approx. raw scores (marks) | Notes (Assuming 85% accuracy) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 99.5+ | 35-38 | 100-110 | Requires near-flawless performance |
| 99 | 30-33 | 90-98 | The goal of the top IIMs calls |
| 97 | 27-30 | 80-89 | Excellent performance |
| 95 | 24-27 | 70-79 | Strong score for leading non-IIM colleges |
| 90 | 18-21 | 55-65 | Solid score |
| 85 | 14-17 | 45-54 | Good base for profile-based institutions |

Ques. What raw score is needed for a 99 percentile in CAT?
Ans. A 99 percentile in CAT usually requires a score in the 95–110 range, based on past exam trends. The exact score varies depending on the difficulty level of your slot and the normalization process. This range helps students understand the target score needed to be in the top 1% of test-takers.
Ques. Why do two students with similar scores get different percentiles in CAT?
Ans. Two students with similar raw scores can receive different percentiles because CAT uses a normalization and scaling system to adjust for differences in difficulty across slots. This ensures fairness even if one slot is easier or harder. As a result, percentiles are standardized scores, not direct comparisons of raw marks.
Ques. How can I estimate my percentile from my CAT score before the results?
Ans. You can estimate your percentile by comparing your raw score with previous years’ score-percentile charts or by using reliable CAT percentile predictors. These tools use section-wise marks, accuracy, and slot difficulty to generate a close estimate so you can assess your chances for IIM shortlisting in advance.
Based on recent analyses and expert predictions, the expected CAT cutoffs for 2025 are as follows:

Several factors impact the determination of cut-offs each year:
Ques. What is the expected cut-off for top IIMs in CAT 2025?
Ans. The expected cut-off for top IIMs like Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta is 98–99+ percentile for General category candidates. This range may change slightly depending on the exam’s difficulty and the overall performance of test-takers, but it remains a reliable benchmark for students aiming for the top institutes.
Ques. Do sectional cut-offs matter for CAT 2025 admissions?
Ans. Yes, all IIMs follow sectional cut-offs along with the overall percentile. Most top IIMs set sectional cut-offs around 75–85 percentile in VARC, DILR, and QA. This means even with a strong overall percentile, missing just one section can affect your chances of getting shortlisted.
Ques. How can I check if I will clear the expected CAT cut-off based on my score?
Ans. You can estimate your chances by comparing your raw score with previous years’ score–percentile charts and using a trusted CAT percentile predictor. Once you get your estimated percentile, match it with the expected cut-offs of your target IIMs to understand whether you're likely to clear their shortlist criteria.
To calculate CAT percentile (both overall and sectional), IIM first converts the raw scores to scaled scores using the CAT score normalization process. This is done to ensure that all the test-takers are evaluated at an equal level irrespective of the slot they appeared in. Then, based on CAT scaled scores, the formula used for percentile calculator is:
| P = ((N-r)/N) x 100 where N is the total number of CAT appeared candidates, r is the rank assigned based on scaled scores. |
Based on expert analyses following the CAT exam pattern, here are the expected scores needed to achieve certain percentiles in CAT 2025:
| Percentile | VARC Score (Out of 100) | DILR Score (Out of 100) | QA Score (Out of 100) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 99%ile | ≥40 | ≥28 | ≥28 |
| 95%ile | ≥30 | ≥19 | ≥19 |
| 90%ile | ≥25 | ≥15 | ≥15 |
| 85%ile | ≥20 | ≥12 | ≥12 |
These scores reflect a comprehensive breakdown of what candidates may need across different sections to achieve their desired percentiles.
