The following table represents the comparison between IIM Calcutta Vs IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore:
College | IIM-Calcutta | IIM-Ahmedabad | IIM-Bangalore |
---|---|---|---|
Established | 1961 | 1961 | 1973 |
Batch Size | 465 (35% Female, 65% Male) | 450 (33.5% Woman, 35% freshers) | 480 (142 Female, 338 Male) |
Campus area | 135 acre | 102 acre | 100 acre |
City | The campus is located far away from the city so the students have limited access to the city. The weather of the city is extremely hot and humid. | The weather during the summers may get unbearable (since there’s no AC in some of the hostels) | Bengaluru is the startup hub of India. The campus is located in the heart of the city which gives the students a chance to explore the city and network. |
Curriculum | core courses in the first year and elective courses in the second. The curriculum is also known to be more intense quantitatively | All courses are mandatory in the first year and the second year has all the elective courses. | IIM B offers a choice of 3 elective courses in the first year itself to prepare the students for the summer placements. |

Culture | IIM- C has a complete opposite culture of homogeneity. Across the 3 IIMs, the closest knit family is that IIMC. IIMC is a classic example of common misery being the best binder of people. They are located outside the city, the climate is difficult, education is tough. This torrid environment of C brings in a culture of togetherness within C-ites. | IIMA is the perfect median between the other 2- it has a culture of clusters. IIMA people are not just achievers, but toppers throughout their lives, a trait that adds insecurity. This is why IIMA people have a very strong and lasting bond with a small group of people. | IIMB has a culture of heterogeneity. At B, each individual is an achiever by themselves. Unlike C, where students grow their social capital, at B, each student explores his/her individuality. There is no cluster of the students across any hostel block or class section. Each one is each one. |
Dual degree | IIM C offers a double degree in association with ESCP Europe. Full placement support is offered to students opting for the dual degree by the institutes. | IIM Ahmedabad has double-degree programme agreement with about six International schools such as ESSEC Business School, HEC, University of Bocconi | IIM Bangalore has double-degree programme agreement with about three International schools such as ESCP Europe Business School), Bocconi University and Hitotsubashi University Business School |

Entry through CAT exam. I have taken CAT 2018 to secure the admission here. Application to IIMs is directly submitted through CAT exam which is held annually. Each IIM has its own admission criteria mentioned on their website, which includes different weightages to CAT exam, 10th, 12th, graduation scores, workex, WAT-PI etc.

In case of MBA at IIMs, each IIM has a different criteria for themselves with respect to different courses. One requires to hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent with 50% marks in graduation, there's no particular cap for 10th and 12th marks but points are awarded according to criteria laid at mba admission page of IIM C. Application form is sent via mail upon eligiblity check (CAT Score and other factors such as kind of degree). Post application, a candidate may or may not recieve a interview call (different IIMs prefer pre interview WAT or GD) depending on cutoff laid down by the institute. On clearing the the interview, the selected candidate will recieve an offer letter both via physical and electronic mail. Voila, you're done, rest of the formalities will be over with once you reach the campus.

The process starts by taking CAT, after the percentile comes a cumulative score is calculated depending on your CAT percentile, category, previous work experience, your degree and your academic scores. If you are in the top 1000-1500 students you are called for personal interviews and questions are based on general aptitude & knowledge, interests mentioned during the introduction in the interview, previous work experience and educational background. CAT-related information can be found out on the official website and websites of coaching institites and post that all information is communicated via email. A few things that can be improved: instead of a singular test, something like GMAT can be conducted so that the result is not dependent on the student's performance on that particular day. Also, scores of the same field from different colleges are considered similar which is not fair since the scoring scheme varies from college to college - instead dependent on the college scores should be standardised

The admission process takes into account your CAT score, past academic scores, gender, academic diversity, and work experience. The application for it is through the CAT portal and if you are deemed eligible for an interview round, you're sent forms by colleges that have shortlisted you. The admissions process can be improved by expediting this entire process as candidates have to wait for months before they get their shortlist and results.

Beyond CAT the admission process is fairly simple and rather similar to that of other IIMs. You apply on their site once they start accepting applications, which is roughly the same timeframe as other IIMs, and they release their shortlists for interviews around the same time as A&B. The site is a touch antiquated and could use sprucing up though. More transparency regarding how profiles are graded for interview calls similar to what Lucknow does would be a big improvement.

Admission to IIMC is a two-stage process. Step 1 comprises clearing CAT which if done, Step 2 opens up where you are supposed to give PI. The college assigns mentors to all the shortlisted candidates for guidance across the entire admission process.

Through the CAT percentile, application on CAT's official website generally rolls out in November. Reservations for PwD, SC/ST, OBC. No improvement is needed, the process can be a little fairer for a general male engineers.

It was a PI process preceded by CAT. All the information was made available timely on the website and the admissions office coordinated the process flawlessly. The ER cell also provided mentors which were PGP students and were matched to our profile.

For GEM, the CAT percentiles required to get an interview call from IIM Blackis, FMS, SP Jain, JBIMS, and MDI Gurgaon are
It’s important to know that these figures are based on trends and not on actual data so you will find exceptions everywhere. Moreover, it’s better you don’t waste time analyzing the CAT cutoff and start preparing for the same.
In my opinion, the IIM APDS is just an average course. ISB Hyderabad course is much better. It’s better to do Data Science courses from technical universities rather than Management colleges like IIM. Also, the IIM APDS course is quite expensive and more like a BA course than Data Science. It focuses more on Business Mathematics/ Business case study discussion than how to explore a data set.
ISBs course best among these courses because it has all the things that are required:
Brand
Faculty
Industry Connect
Curriculum
Alumni
Also this course has more time for all the subjects and capstone projects too. The only drawback is the high fees.
One lesser-known fact about IIM Calcutta is the unhygienic conditions caused by the dirty lakes surrounding it. Mostly this truth is underestimated. But the reality is the pictures of the lakes at IIM Calcutta are misleading. They are nothing near surreal or beautiful. If anything they are the brooding ground of mosquitoes. Snakes and other poisonous creatures are also present here. Anyone who comes in contact with its water is bound to get skin infection or other ailments.
These lakes have been used as a marketing element for IIM Calcutta and it’s shocking that people believe such lies.
IIML is clearly superior to MDI in non-marketing specializations in terms of placement. However, IIM I, K, and MDI are generally equal in terms of placements, except for a few banks that specifically seek out the IIM tag at I&K. If you work equally hard at either campus and all other operational factors are constant, you will likely end up in a similar position whether you choose MDI or I or K. However, as mentioned before, IIML still has the edge and requires more effort if you're in the finance or consulting field.
If you're interested in MDI, it's worth noting that recent placement reports show more and more prestigious finance and consulting companies are visiting the campus. This has helped MDI deliver well-rounded placements. So, if you're willing to put in the work, MDI could be a good option for you.
The overall rankings of FMS Delhi and IIM A/C are comparable (IIM A & C rank better than FMS in terms of placements and college life though).
FMS has its own set of advantages, such as the best ROI in India and placements in the core Finance domain, among many others. You must have performed exceptionally well on CAT 201 to receive a call from FMS. Asking yourself the following questions will help you retake the CAT.
What do you hope to gain from your post-graduation experience?
Start a career at a high salary, get a brand name, or develop your own personality by staying and studying with the industry's best minds.
Which field do you want to begin your career in?
Consulting/core finance/marketing, for example.
Are you willing to invest a year of your life to prepare for the CAT again, and are you confident of scoring 99+ percentile in 2019?
The maximum amount of money you can afford to pay in fees.
The answer to your question depends on the reason why you are willing to pursue an MBA and if the reason is strong enough to go for an MBA at the age of 29 years. See, age should never be a restricting factor especially when it comes to education. But your purpose should be well-defined and crystal clear. Pursuing MBA vaguely just to venture on new opportunities or career options might do you more harm than good. So the primary step in deciding if an MBA at 29 is good or not is to analyze your purpose. If you are changing streams for instance moving to Finance or MC, you need to know that your pay scale might see a new low.
I have another suggestion for you. Why don’t you compare the two programs;
Compare the curriculum and prospects of these two programs. The reason why I suggested to you research the Executive program is that many experienced professionals (almost 95%) prefer the Executive program over the regular program. It suits their needs better.
The 2-year program is suitable only if you are looking for an internship and I Don't think that is the case for you. Moreover, if you consider the major aspects like classroom experience, rigor and placements, the Executive program is far more a viable option in your case. It will also allow you to reap the maximum benefits in less time. So do your part of the research and make an informed decision.
No, IIM Calcutta does not usually reject you just because of a backlog in graduation provided that you have cleared it.
Majority of the batch consists of students from top colleges like IIT,NIT,BIT, DTU, etc. It's very common for a large number of students if these colleges have at least one backlog.
I have seen many cases where people receive calls from IIM Calcutta despite having repeated most of their courses.
So no, a single backlog will not be a hindrance for your call from IIM Calcutta.
Your question basically means what criteria are required to get into IIM A B or C. The table below has summarized the different parameters that decide your eligibility for admission into IIM ABC.

Non-Engineers can get a call with low percentile also |
Now considering your profile, you need the following CAT score to get into IIM A B C
IIM Ahmedabad: If you are a non-engineer you will get a call easily but if you are an engineer you will need work experience and at least 99.5+CAT score
IIM Bangalore: You will need work experience to compensate for poor academic record or at least 100 percentile to get a call
IIM Calcutta: you will need 98.8+ if you are a girl. For boys, it is around 99.6+.
The first two IIMs were supposed to be in Mumbai and Calcutta. While the land and approvals for Calcutta came relatively easily, the then-Mumbai state government refused to allot land for an IIM in Mumbai and acted rather casually.
Meanwhile, Vikram Sarabhai, the driving force behind the IIMs concept, was eager to get the IIMs up and running as soon as possible. He was well known for his extensive business and political connections, but his entire industrial and research infrastructure was in Ahmedabad (in the then-newly created state of Gujarat).
Vikram Sarabhai was so eager to get the IIM started in western India (one in the east and one in the west was the initial logic, which was followed by one in the south and one in the north as well) that he pulled all the strings for an IIM in Ahmedabad. For the first few years, IIMA was based in Vikram Sarabhai's personal bungalow in Ahmedabad's Shahi Baug area.
He was also the driving force behind the recruitment of other IIMA legends, including Louis Kahn for the architectural plan, Kastoorbhai Lalbhai of Arvind Mills for the donation of all land for the campus, and the mesmerizing Ravi J. Matthai, the institute's first full-time director.
Your graduation score is a bit low but it depends on your institute too. If you are from a top college, then this score will be considered pretty good. Moreover, past academics are not the only deciding factor when it comes to admission to IIMs. You do have decent changes if selection viewing your overall profile.
As for the CAT Score, don’t set a fixed target and just aim for as high as you can. The cutoffs keep changing depending on various factors so what should remain constant are your efforts. Additionally, preparing for the interview is very crucial because it determines your chances of admission.
