  • Academic diversity gives up to 6 points to non-engineers and professional degree holders such as CA, CS, and ICWA in the final composite score.
  • Overseas candidates (foreign nationals or Indians living or studying abroad) apply through a separate process with a distinct application deadline.
  • No state or domicile quota applies. IIM Calcutta admits from a national pool across all categories.
  • Final-year bachelor’s degree candidates can apply if they complete their degree by June 30, 2027.

IIM Calcutta MBA Selection Criteria 2027

IIM Calcutta MBA admission uses a three-stage selection process. Stage I screens all applicants against minimum CAT percentile cutoffs. Stage II ranks eligible candidates for WAT-PI calls using a composite score. Stage III produces the final merit list after WAT and PI rounds.

Stage II: Shortlisting for WAT-PI (Total: 85 points)

  • CAT 2026 Score: 56 points
  • Class 12 Board Marks: 15 points
  • Class 10 Board Marks: 10 points
  • Gender Diversity Component: 4 points (female and transgender candidates only)

Stage III: Final Selection Composite Score (Total: 100 points)

  • Personal Interview (PI): 48 points
  • CAT 2026 Score: 30 points
  • Work Experience: 8 points
  • Written Ability Test (WAT): 8 points
  • Academic Diversity: 6 points
  • IIM Calcutta does NOT conduct a Group Discussion. Selection uses WAT and PI only.
  • The WAT requires a structured essay on a given topic. Duration is typically 20 minutes.
  • The PI is conducted by a panel of three interviewers. It covers academics, work profile, and current affairs.
  • Academic diversity points go to non-engineers and holders of professional qualifications such as CA, CS, and ICWA.
  • Work experience is calculated from the date of bachelor’s degree completion. Only post-graduation employment counts.

As per the Quora Discussion on IIM Calcutta WAT-PI experiences, interview panels typically consist of three members and cover academic background, work projects, and general awareness. WAT topics include policy, ethics, and social themes. Candidates describe the interview as structured and profile-centric rather than stress-based.

Note: Class 10 and Class 12 marks are fixed inputs in the shortlisting formula. Candidates with below-average board scores should aim for a higher CAT percentile to compensate in the 85-point composite used for WAT-PI shortlisting.

IIM Calcutta Admissions: Students' Opinion

  • MBA

AI-Generated Summary based on 84 Reviews

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) program at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC) requires candidates to sit for the Common Admission Test (CAT) as the primary entrance exam. Admission to the program encompasses multiple factors beyond CAT scores, including academic background, work experience, gender diversity, and past academic performance. Although the CAT score cutoffs can vary significantly, candidates generally must possess a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 50% marks.

IIMC does not specify exact marks for 10th and 12th grades, but these factors may influence profile scoring. The application process begins with online applications on the IIMC website, aligning with similar timelines as other IIMs. The shortlisting process, for interview calls, remains less transparent compared to institutes like IIM Lucknow, creating challenges for some candidates, especially those from a general engineering background. Applicants without work experience who have an interest in finance may find this program particularly appealing.

Upon clearing the interview stage, selected candidates receive offers via physical and electronic mail. Currently, the institute is encouraged to improve the transparency of its shortlisting criteria.

How much minimum CAT percentile do I need to get IIM Calcutta or IIM Lucknow if I have Xth 93, XIIth 73, and BTech 70, without any work experience?

Khushboo Shafi
Sagar Dikshitlives in Lucknow

Your graduation score is a bit low but it depends on your institute too. If you are from a top college, then this score will be considered pretty good. Moreover, past academics are not the only deciding factor when it comes to admission to IIMs. You do have decent changes if selection viewing your overall profile.

As for the CAT Score, don’t set a fixed target and just aim for as high as you can. The cutoffs keep changing depending on various factors so what should remain constant are your efforts. Additionally, preparing for the interview is very crucial because it determines your chances of admission.

Can I get into IIM A/B/C or XLRI or SCMHRD?

Advait JoshiLives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

Top management institutes in India like IIMs, XLRI, and SCMHRD require a combination of academic performance, entrance exam scores, work experience, extracurricular activities, and performance in selection rounds like Personal Interviews and Group discussions.

Top IIMs (A, B, C) have CAT cutoff percentiles of 99 or higher. XLRI's XAT cutoff is over 95 percentile, and SCMHRD's SNAP threshold is approximately 97 percentile. These cutoffs can change from year to year depending on factors including the number of applications and exam difficulty.

Academic performance is crucial but not the primary criterion for admittance. Admissions committees seek well-rounded applicants with leadership potential, great communication skills, and a demonstrated passion for the field. Thus, if an applicant excels in other areas, they can still get into a prestigious B-school despite poorer academics.

Top B-schools are competitive and require outstanding academic performance, high entrance exam scores, and strong applications.

Is it advisable to settle on JBIMS, if one only aimed for IIM's?

Ashish PaiStudied at Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies

Comparing JBIMS with IIMs is highly unjustified as IIMs are way ahead of JBIMS or FMS even if we consider the ROI. They are unique in many aspects such as

  • IIM ABC and ISB is the only B-schools that offer Investment banking profiles in placement. Even if we look at other profiles, it’s easy to infer that they are much superior in terms of quality than the ones offered at JBIMS.
  • Being a pass out of IIMs or ISB, you have an upper hand in the higher spectrum of one’s career, i.e, leadership roles.
  • JBIMS or FMS lack the general ambiance and culture of a typical B School due to a lack of residential and campus facilities.
  • The peer quality of IIMS and ISB are much better than JBIMS whose gender ratio, diversity, and competitive exam are very one-dimensional.
  • The only significant aspect of JBIMS is the ROI which when negated makes JBIMS as mediocre as SP Jain and MDI.
  • The placement statistics of JBIMS are much similar to that of new IIMs or average B Schools like MDI, and SP Jain. They are in no way in comparison to the top IIMs even with batch sizes as small as 120.

So one should choose JBIMS or FMS over IIM only if one wants to spend low fees, take no loans, or pursue MBA in Mumbai or Delhi.

I am fresher student studying at IIM Lucknow, I want to drop out. What are my chances of converting IIM-A,B, C after gaining 2-3 years of experience?

Sabeer Chalana
Saloni GuptaIIM Kozhikode PGP 2018-20

I don’t think it's wise to decide to drop out from IIM Lucknow when you already worked hard and cracked the entrance. You even succeeded in the interview and yet here you want to give it all up. Every year the level of difficulty of entrance exams like the CAT and XAT keeps changing. Students who might have scored 90+ percentile one year might score 40-60 percentile next year. It all depends on preparation and mindset. Meanwhile, you have already succeeded and gotten into an IIM so why take it for granted?

Yet if you are adamant about not continuing, I would suggest you just focus on your job and gain a lot of experience. Chances are that you might climb the ladder without an MBA or IIM. Many CEOs and CFOs don’t need an MBA to make them what they are.

Despite it all, if you are appearing again for CAT, then make sure you have a valid explanation of dropping out during your interview.

I have taken a year drop after the 12th. Am I eligible to apply for the PGDBA program offered by IIM Calcutta?

Sugandhi Sood
Arshit JainPGDBA in Business Analytics & Data Science, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta

That is perfectly acceptable. This should not be an issue. You are eligible to apply for IIM Calcutta's PGDBA program even if you have taken a year drop after the 12th. The only thing you should be prepared for is a valid reason for taking a year's leave.

Your response must be convincing, and you must not appear to have wasted your gap year. Whatever the reason, you must be prepared to provide a confident response. You can be comfortable knowing that it will have no effect on your selection process.

Can I get admission to IIM Calcutta with an 80 in 10th, 99.85 in 12th, and 98 in graduation?

Apoorva AdityaKnows something about CAT

IIM Calcutta focuses on CAT rather than 10th/12th/graduation to give you PI calls. Then, during the selection stage, IIM C prioritizes PI performance over all other factors. So, without a doubt, your academic results are excellent and will aid you in the admissions process (though relatively low). So, if you want to get into IIM C for MBA, you should focus on getting a higher CAT percentile and excellent PI preparation and performance.

If you have academic or gender diversity work experience, or if you are from the EWS/PwD/NC-OBC/SC/ST category, the process will be sped up.
