The admission process for IIM Mumbai consists of Various steps. The first step involves taking the CAT Entrance Exam and filling out the form for IIM Mumbai generally revolves around the 98-99 percentile, with weightage given to academic performance in 10th, 12th, graduation and previous work experience. After filling out the form for IIM Mumbai, which has an application fee of Rs 1000, the form floats after the CA5T results are published. The institute follows all Central Reservation policies. Eligibility of the course Candidate should have an aggregate of 70% marks or more throughout 10th, 12th, and undergrad. Only candidates with an engineering background are eligible for the course. NITIE conducts its own written exam, post that the shortlisting of candidates for interview is done based on one's performance in the written exam and review of SOPs and LOR as sent by candidates. The final merit list is declared by adding all the previous scores along with the PI score. The Application form can be found on NITIE's official website. Application fees are Rs. 2000/-. I am a PGDIE student which is a flagship course of the institute. For this course, the eligibility criteria is GATE Score. The admission process is very smooth and a dedicated team works to make the functions go efficiently. One can find the details of the application form release, application fee and dates by visiting the NITIE's official website regularly. A gate score of 750+ is decent enough for girl candidates belonging to the general category and 800+ for boy candidates in the general category and varies according to different reservation criteria and engineering branches too. I belong to the General EWS category got shortlisted and was finally selected for admission on a score of 717.

How much percentile do I need to get a call from MDI Gurgaon, IMT Ghaziabad, IIM K, SP Jain, NITIE?
To secure admission to top MBA institutes in India, you should aim for CAT percentiles from 85 onwards. Here's the order of the institutes you should target in descending order - IIM K with 97+ percentile, MDI with 96+, IMT Ghaziabad with 90+, SPJain with 85+, and NITIE with as high as possible sectional-wise.
Even though SPJain is a premier institute, it gives a call from the 85 percentile onward, since they focus on overall values that an individual possesses and want students with more values in them. They have 2 group interviews, so they follow a rejection procedure.
NITIE has a sectional cutoff, so it's advisable to have as high as possible sectional-wise, as many people with an overall CAT percentile in the range of 97-98 were not selected in either of their 2 programs(PGDM and PGDIESM) in 2016.
IIM K also has a sectional cutoff of 90+, so it's important to score well in each section.
It's worth noting that these institutes do not have a sectional cutoff, but it's always advisable to have a 90+ sectional percentile to be on the safer side. Aim for high percentile and sectional scores to improve your chances of securing a seat in these prestigious institutes.
Which is a better B-school in general, NITIE or IIMs?
NITIE was not established to compete with the IIMs. It was established with the aim of making Engineers into good managers who have decent technical and managerial skills required across industries.
But, since the PGDIM & PGDISEM programs of NITIE admit students through CAT, people do compare the college with IIMs. Still, in case you want to know where NITIE stands among reputed B-Schools of India, I will say it falls in cluster - 2.
Here are the various clusters of Indian B-Schools.
- Cluster 1 - IIM A, IIM B, IIM C, IIM L, XLRI, SPJIMR, FMS, ISB
- Cluster 2 - MDI, IIFT, NITIE, IIM K, IIM I, SJMSoM, JBIMS, TISS
- Cluster 3 - NMIMS, SIBM P, SCMHRD, IIM Ranchi, IIM Trichy, IIM Rohtak, IIM Raipur, DoMS IIT D, VGSoM
Despite being in a different cluster, the course structure, rigor, placements, industrial exposure, and batch quality of NITIE are on par with the old IIMs. NITIE also has a locational advantage. The alumni base of NITIE is huge and they regularly visit the campus for guest lectures, seminars, and placements.
So, IIMs and NITIE are different types of B-Schools and it’s not possible to give a conclusive comparison between them.
Can anyone guide me regarding what kind of questions are asked in NITIE Mumbai for PGDIE intakes?
A friend of mine appeared for the PGDIE interview of NITIE Mumbai, a few years back. He is a Mechanical Engineering graduate. Around 70% of the interview questions were about his profile and his B.Tech project. There were some questions from his graduation subjects as well. During the interview, they often ask technical questions like, ‘Why NITIE?’, ‘What is your career goal?’, etc.
NITIE selection criteria assign more weightage to the GATE score. If you have a decent GATE score, you will have an edge over others. But don’t take the GD-PI round lightly.
What is the better way to get an admission in NITIE Mumbai through the GATE or the CAT?
Some of my friends studied at NITIE Mumbai. According to them, there is no better way to get admission to NITIE. There are 2 ways to get admission, these include -
- Through GATE - This leads to admission in courses like PGDIE, which is the flagship course, PGDMM, and PGDPM.
- Through CAT - This gets admission in PGDIM and PGDISEM.
At NITIE all the courses are given equal importance. The faculties of every course are highly experienced and very cooperative.
The college conducts a common placement program, where all the students of all departments can take part in. The course structure is almost similar during the first year.
So you can choose from these 2 ways to get admission to NITIE. Ultimately it depends on your strengths and weaknesses.
There is nothing like a better way to join NITIE, to join any of the courses you have to be top-ranked in the respective exams.
Is there any fake placement in NITIE?
No, not at all. NITIE is one of the most reputed colleges in India. In fact, NITIE is a brand of its own. It is basically a government institute that falls directly under the MHRD. It has been standing tall and strong for the past 54 years.
- NITIE has a 100% placement rate.
- The highest package offered is 44 LPA while the average package offered is 20.85 LPA.
- Some of the major companies like Amazon, Flipkart, GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals (GSK), Abbott Healthcare Pvt Ltd, Amway, Google, Vodafone, Nestle, etc come for final placements.
NITIE has built tie-ups with the industry, all with the help of the several pillars on which it thrives be it Deans, Directors, Faculty, alumni, Student volunteers, and others. It has only been possible because of the trust and integrity that is shared between NITIE and its stakeholders.
Is it worth doing a PGDIE course at NITIE at 29, after having a 5-year gap after graduation and a 3-year work experience in a PSU? Do placements get affected because of the age factor?
Answering such a question is a bit typical as it is important to know whether you are working or just asking. If you are working or due to some reason there is a gap of 5 years after graduation then you should have substantial reason during your PI.
Another crucial factor will be what the main reason is for the 5-year gap after graduation. Just in case,
- If you are a female candidate and left work due to marriage, childbirth, and relocation to a different city, the recruiters will tend to be more cooperative.
- If you do not have any illnesses or other severe burdens recruiters will be skeptical of hiring you as it shows that you lack the motivation to work.
- But, if you are from PSU you would be preferred in final interviews. I would suggest you with such experience in PSU and 5 years of gap your best bet would be towards consulting. Though, it could be a bit difficult getting into FMCG.
Apart from all this, if you want to join NITIE for placements, I think the average package is pretty good now and you will get at least 15 LPA if you are a sincere person or at the worst someone will get only 10 LPA for sure. Better you prepare yourself with convincing reasons and joining NITIE would be the best option.
Which course should I choose, NITIE Powai or IIT Bombay?
If you want a career in management then NITIE is the better choice. For a career in the technical sector, you should prefer IIT Bombay.
Unlike IITs, you will get management job profiles through NITIE placements. It offers better salary packages compared to IITs. In 2022, students of NITIE received an average CTC of INR 25.41 LPA. The growth opportunities for NITIE graduates. You will get to work on the productivity management of companies.
Why couldn't IIM A, B, and C compete with NITIE in operations?
The question you have asked can also be interpreted as to why Microsoft is not currently competing with HAL in producing similar products since they both come with their own personal expertise.
Either of the institutes does not need to compete against one another because they already come with their own prospects, image, and information.
IIM Ahmedabad does not actually emphasize students to opt for a management function for pursuing a major or specialization. The course of general management is 2-years long with the liberty to choose electives as per one's choice and on the basis of academic profile in the second year. Students, before placements, are asked to rank and rate companies that they want to call on the campus during future offers.
In fact, IIM - A, B or C is not particularly competing with NITIE, Mumbai in Operations because they both have maintained their own personal brand values which are gigantically different.
They have, at present, established a whole perspective of General Management B-Schools. Apart from that, IIMs do not apparently require to participate in a competition against NITIE as any management course since students over and across India generally only prefer the former anyway.
Is job experience necessary for getting into NITIE Mumbai through GATE?
No, it is not necessary to have work experience to get into NITIE Mumbai through GATE. NITIE Mumbai, like any other college, tries to diversify its batch so that every recruiter who visits the campus for placement gets the student profile they are looking for.
- Candidates with no experience (freshers) to people who have 4-5 years of work experience also join NITIE Mumbai.
- This college is known for supply chain management across India.
- Thus many companies visiting the campus focus on candidates having prior experience in this sector.
- So work experience candidates may have a better chance than others but that again depends on your previous sector.
In short, you do not necessarily need work experience to get into NITIE Mumbai through GATE. But then it depends on various other factors like past academic records, GATE scores, extra-curricular activities, and many more.
Is NITIE good for MBA?
NITIE is a great option for an MBA. It is the best college in the country to pursue post-graduation in Supply Chain and Operations. NITIE Mumbai placements are excellent. Almost all organizations in India recruit from NITIE for SCM-Ops. The institute offers good placements in Consulting, Strategy-Operations, Finance, Sales, IT/ITES, as well. HUL, Pepsico, Nestle, Deloitte, KPMG, Yes Bank, ICICI Bank, etc. are among the major recruiters that hire from the institute.

Your chances of getting a seat in IIM Mumbai program, if any of the student who is offered a seat but refused to accept it. If he accepts the seat, then your chance of getting admission becomes lower.
All candidates must appear for a Research Presentation and Personal Interview. Research Presentation will be based on the research proposal submitted by the candidate. This evaluation will be done by panels comprising faculty of IIM, Mumbai, experts from academia and industry. Personal Interview will be conducted along with the research presentation by the same area panel. The panel may test the subject knowledge, potential, motivation for research, communication skills, and overall research potential. Project/ Work experience in the mentioned research areas would be preferred.
