CAT Preparation 2026: 4 Month Strategy

As per a video under the YouTube channel PREPnip Society, below is the 4-month strategy for students to implement and make the most out of their CAT prep:

• Students should gradually increase preparation intensity:
  • Around 4–5 hours/day in Month 1,
  • 5–6 hours/day (150–180 hours/month) in Month 2,
  • 6+ hours/day (180+ hours/month) in Month 3, and
  • Maximum exam-focused hours with mocks in Month 4.

• Instead of trying to complete every topic, the strategy prioritises areas where maximum CAT marks come from. It includes Arithmetic & Algebra in Quant, major LRDI set families, and RC-based VARC preparation.

• Accuracy over attempts in mocks. A lower number of correct attempts with high accuracy is more valuable than attempting more questions with negative marking.

• Every mock should be analysed in three ways:
  • Attempt Analysis: Which questions should have been attempted but were missed? Which questions should have been skipped?
  • Time Analysis: Where was time wasted? Which questions consumed too much time without enough return?
  • Mistake Analysis: Identify errors due to concepts, calculation mistakes, wrong selection, or pressure handling.

Month 1: Foundation Building

Month 1 focuses on building a foundation for the CAT exam:

• Complete Arithmetic basics (Percentages, Profit & Loss, Ratio, Averages, Interest, Mixtures) and strengthen fundamentals.
• Start VARC reading habits and build basic LRDI set-solving skills through untimed practice.
• Take a diagnostic mock to identify your preparation level, strengths, and weak areas.

Month 2: Concept Expansion and Application

In month 2, focus on expanding the concepts learnt, and applying them in practice:

• Finish remaining Arithmetic and begin Algebra topics like equations, inequalities, functions, and powers.
• Move towards CAT-level LRDI sets and improve RC accuracy through deeper analysis.
• Start regular sectional tests and mocks with detailed mistake analysis

Month 3: Advanced Topics and Conversion

In month 3, focus on revision, increase the mock attempts, and maintain an error log that keeps the repeated mistakes in sight:

• Cover Geometry and Number Systems while continuing revision of Arithmetic and Algebra.
• Shift focus from learning to application through PYQs, timed sets, and CAT-level practice.
• Increase mock frequency and maintain an error log to fix repeated mistakes.

Month 4: Final Revision and Mock Intensive

In the final month, no new topics to be learned; thoroughly practice the weaker study areas, revise the strong suits, and take frequent mocks:

• Stop learning new topics and focus on revision, weak-area improvement, and mixed practice.
• Build exam stamina through timed VARC, LRDI, and Quant practice.
• Take frequent mocks, analyse performance, and refine final exam strategy.

An IIM Bangalore student has given the below roadmap for CAT 2026 preparation on a Reddit thread r/CATpreparation:

• The roadmap maps preparation by phases rather than topics. It gives
  • 30% for foundation building,
  • 10% for PYQs,
  • 20% for strategy development, and
  • 40% for mock-intensive revision.
• High-ROI preparation is prioritised, focusing on Arithmetic & Algebra in Quant, daily reading for VARC, and struggling through LRDI sets independently before viewing solutions to improve problem-solving ability.
• Mock analysis forms the largest part of the plan. Attempt sectionals followed by daily mocks and detailed analysis in the final three months.
