Admission to IIT Madras is determined through the IIT JEE exam, comprising JEE Main and JEE Advanced levels. Students are ranked based on their performance, which influences course allocation. The application process is conducted online, from submission to course selection and fee payment. The faculty consists mainly of scientists who facilitate understanding without excessive guidance, though only a few are highly skilled in teaching. The fee structure is income-based, with a 2/3 tuition fee reduction for students with a family income below Rs. 1,00,000, and full waivers for SC/ST students.

Tuition fees stand at Rs. 50,000 per semester, plus a Rs. 7,500 special fee, while hostel and food costs total approximately Rs. 20,000 per semester. Fees have doubled from previous years, but scholarships are available, and there are no hidden costs. Over 500 companies, including McKinsey, BCG, Microsoft, and Google, visit for recruitment starting in December. The highest package offered reached 1.2 crore per annum, with typical packages ranging from 6 LPA to 1 crore.

However, 25% of students do not secure jobs through campus placements. Mandatory internships, offering stipends between 10,000 and 100,000 INR, are part of the curriculum, with opportunities from big firms like JP Morgan and McKinsey. Research internships can be pursued at international universities like the University of Tokyo. Financial assistance is available through an on-campus SBI Bank branch offering loan facilities, and students can apply for the Merit-Cum-Means (MCM) Scholarship, providing Rs. 1,000 monthly and a full tuition fee waiver.

Additional scholarships are offered by alumni and certain state governments, ensuring support for students from all financial backgrounds.
