IIT Madras: A Beautiful Place

I took admission through the General Quota. The admission criteria back in 2012 were through IIT-JEE where I scored an AIR of 3902. Anyone who has finished his class 12th exam in the PCM stream with a minimum of 60% could take IIT-JEE. The admission process was very smooth.

The course I chose was Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. The reason was that it had an interesting curriculum. The faculty ratio in the department was around 1:3. Most of the faculty were from a very in depth research background.

The companies that came for internships were JP Morgan, McKinsey, Schlumberger and many other startups. The stipend that was offered would range from 10000 to 100000. Also, there were research internships that students had to apply separately and the admits were from the University of Tokyo, Michigan State University etc.

There were more than 500 companies that visited IITM. Every year placements happen from 1st December. The placements happen in 2-3 phases. Some of the prominent companies that visited my college were McKinsey, BCG, Microsoft, Google, JP Morgan, Schlumberger etc. The highest package was around 1.2 Cr annually and it was a profile offered in the USA.

I was offered the MCM (Merit-Cum-Means Scholarship). The tuition fees were waived off for the entire curriculum. I was finally placed with Schlumberger with a yearly compensation of 34 Lakhs. The college is very welcoming to all classes of students irrespective of their financial background.

The campus life is extremely social. The diversity of students that come to campus every year is immense. There are 2 fests every year which are of the national level. I was part of the tech fest and the cultural fest as well. The sports facilities are very wide including Cricket, Basketball, Volleyball to Squash, Weightlifting and Lawn Tennis.

The facilities provided in the room were very decent. It was a double seater room in my first year and single seater from the second year onwards. The meal quality, I would say, was 7 out of 10 for the North Indian food and 9/10 for the South Indian food. The hostel was pretty affordable.
