What is JEE Advanced 2026?

JEE Advanced — Joint Entrance Examination Advanced — is the most prestigious engineering entrance exam in India. It is the sole gateway to undergraduate programmes at all 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The Joint Admission Board (JAB), comprising representatives from all IITs, oversees the exam. Each year, one of the IITs takes on the responsibility of conducting it; in 2026, that responsibility was given to IIT Roorkee.

The exam tests candidates on Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics through two compulsory computer-based papers. Unlike JEE Main — which is conducted by NTA and provides admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs — JEE Advanced is exclusively for IIT admission. Only candidates who qualify JEE Main 2026 and rank within the top 2,50,000 become eligible to register for JEE Advanced.

JEE Advanced 2026 was held on May 17, 2026. More than 1,87,389 candidates registered, of whom 1,79,694 appeared for both papers. The result was declared on June 1, 2026. A total of 56,880 candidates qualified — roughly 31.6% of those who appeared. Of these qualifiers, 10,107 are female candidates.

The exam offers admission to B.Tech, B.S., B.Arch, Dual Degree (B.Tech-M.Tech), and Integrated M.Tech/M.Sc programmes. Around 17,897 seats are distributed across the 23 IITs. JEE Advanced is recognised globally as one of the most difficult undergraduate entrance examinations, with a low qualifying ratio even among students who have already cleared JEE Main.

JEE Advanced 2026 Marks vs Rank

Your JEE Advanced 2026 rank is determined by the total marks you scored across Paper 1 and Paper 2 combined. The table below gives an approximate idea of the rank you can expect based on your total marks. These estimates are based on the 2026 qualifying cutoff (92 marks for General category) and the 2025-2026 score distribution trend across 56,880 qualifiers.

Marks (out of 360) Approximate Rank Range (General) Likely IIT Admission Outcome
320–360 1–100 Top IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur) — CSE and EE accessible
280–319 100–500 Older IITs — wide choice of branches; top departments accessible
240–279 500–2,000 Older IITs — most branches; newer IITs — CSE and EE
200–239 2,000–5,000 Good branches at newer IITs; some branches at older IITs
160–199 5,000–10,000 Mid-tier IITs across most branches
120–159 10,000–20,000 Newer IITs — lower-demand branches
92–119 20,000–56,880 Qualified; seat availability depends on JoSAA round-by-round progression

Note: These are approximate ranges based on historical trends. Actual ranks depend on paper difficulty and the overall score distribution of all 1,79,694 candidates who appeared in 2026. Category-wise rank lists (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, Female) have separate cutoffs and may give a seat at a lower total score. Always check the official rank list on jeeadv.ac.in for your exact rank.

The highest score in JEE Advanced 2026 was 330 out of 360. This shows that even toppers do not score full marks — the exam is designed to test depth of understanding under time pressure. A score of 200+ places you comfortably in the top 5,000, giving a strong chance of a seat at one of the newer IITs.

JEE Advanced 2026 Cutoff

JEE Advanced 2026 has two types of cutoffs: the qualifying cutoff (minimum marks to get a rank) and the admission cutoff (IIT-wise and branch-wise opening and closing ranks in JoSAA). The qualifying cutoff for 2026 has been released with the result. Admission cutoffs will only be available after all JoSAA counselling rounds are complete — expected by August 2026.

JEE Advanced 2026 Qualifying Cutoff (Category-wise)

To get a rank in JEE Advanced 2026, candidates must score the minimum marks per subject AND the minimum total marks for their category. Scoring below either threshold means no rank is assigned — the candidate is not eligible for IIT admission.

Category Min. Marks per Subject (out of 120) Min. Total Marks (out of 360)
General (GEN) 8 92
OBC-NCL 7 83
GEN-PwD 4 46
SC 4 46
ST 4 46
OBC-NCL-PwD 4 46
SC-PwD 4 46
ST-PwD 4 46

JEE Advanced 2025 vs 2026 Qualifying Cutoff Comparison

The qualifying cutoff for SC and ST categories dropped notably from 62 to 46 in 2026. This reflects adjustments linked to paper difficulty and the overall score distribution this year — when the paper is harder across the board, the qualifying threshold adjusts downward to maintain proportional access for reserved categories.

Category Qualifying Cutoff 2025 (out of 360) Qualifying Cutoff 2026 (out of 360)
General 93 92
OBC-NCL 83 83
SC 62 46
ST 62 46

JEE Advanced IIT Admission Cutoff — 2025 Data (Reference)

Branch-wise closing ranks for JEE Advanced 2026 will be published on josaa.nic.in only after all counselling rounds are finished (expected August 2026). The 2025 closing ranks below serve as a historical reference for the level of competition in popular branches. IIT CSE is consistently the hardest branch to secure across all IITs.

IITs Offering B.Arch via AAT IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, IIT (BHU) Varanasi

AAT 2026 result is available on jeeadv.ac.in. Candidates who have passed the AAT can include B.Arch programmes at the three IITs in their JoSAA choice list. Seat allocation for B.Arch is still based on the candidate’s JEE Advanced 2026 Common Rank List (CRL) rank — a better JEE Advanced rank gives a higher chance of securing a preferred IIT for B.Arch.

Candidates who did not register for AAT or who received a FAIL result cannot opt for B.Arch seats in JoSAA 2026. The AAT is conducted only once per year and registration was possible only within 48 hours after the JEE Advanced result — so timing is critical for future aspirants interested in architecture at the IITs.

JoSAA Counselling 2026

JoSAA — Joint Seat Allocation Authority — manages centralised counselling for admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). JoSAA 2026 counselling started on June 2, 2026 and is currently active. All JEE Advanced 2026 qualifiers must participate in JoSAA to secure an IIT seat. JEE Main qualifiers who did not appear for JEE Advanced can also use JoSAA to apply for NIT, IIIT, and GFTI seats.

How to Complete JoSAA 2026 Registration and Choice Filling

You must complete the following steps before June 11, 2026:

  • Go to josaa.nic.in and click on "Registration / Choice Filling"
  • Log in using your JEE Advanced 2026 roll number and date of birth
  • Upload required documents — Class 10 and 12 mark sheets, category certificate (if applicable), valid photo ID, passport-size photograph, and signature
  • Fill your college and branch preferences in order of priority. You can add as many choices as you want — more choices improve your chances of getting a seat
  • Use Mock Allotment Round 1 (June 8) and Round 2 (June 10) to preview your likely seat based on your current preference list. Revise before June 11 if needed
  • Lock your choice list before June 11, 2026 at 11:59 PM. Choices cannot be changed after locking
  • Pay the seat acceptance fee if a seat is allotted to you in Round 1 (published June 13) to confirm your provisional admission

JoSAA 2026 — Key Rules to Know

  • Seat acceptance fee: Rs 35,000 for General/OBC-NCL candidates; Rs 15,000 for SC/ST/PwD candidates. This is paid online after allotment and adjusts against the first-year fee at the allotted college
  • If you receive a better allotment in a later round (upgrade), you can withdraw from the earlier allotment — the fee adjusts automatically
  • You must physically report to the allotted college with original documents within the reporting window of each round you accept
  • Non-reporting after accepting a seat leads to forfeiture of the seat and the seat acceptance fee

JoSAA seat allotment is based entirely on rank and your preference order. Put the best college-branch combinations at the top and keep filling until you reach the maximum allowed choices. Missing the June 11 deadline means you cannot participate in JoSAA 2026 at all.

JEE Advanced Preparation Tips

JEE Advanced is designed to test deep conceptual understanding and multi-step problem solving under strict time pressure — not just NCERT-level knowledge. Students preparing for JEE Advanced 2027 should use the 2026 paper as a live benchmark for difficulty and question style.

Physics

  • Mechanics and Electricity and Magnetism carry the heaviest weightage across both papers. Master these before moving to optics or modern physics
  • Understand every concept from first principles — formula derivation practice helps in multi-concept problems where you cannot simply recall a memorised result
  • Use H.C. Verma’s Concepts of Physics (both volumes) as your primary resource — the exercises closely mirror JEE Advanced problem types and difficulty
  • Practice numerical problems where two or three different topics combine in a single question — this is the most distinctive feature of JEE Advanced Physics

Chemistry

  • Organic Chemistry requires understanding of reaction mechanisms and electron flow — not just memorising product names
  • Physical Chemistry needs mathematical application. Practice electrochemistry, thermodynamics, and equilibrium numerical problems regularly alongside theory
  • For Inorganic, master periodic trends and coordination compounds — these topics appear reliably every year. Qualitative analysis problems also appear often in Paper 2
  • J.D. Lee is a standard reference for Inorganic beyond NCERT level; for Organic mechanisms, start with NCERT and then move to advanced resources

Mathematics

  • Calculus is the single largest topic. Integration techniques, definite integrals, and differential equations need daily dedicated practice
  • Coordinate geometry problems at JEE Advanced level often require combining algebraic reasoning with geometric insight — practice both approaches for every conic section
  • Solve all JEE Advanced Mathematics papers from 2007 to 2026. The question style has a recognisable pattern across years even when topics vary
  • SL Loney’s Trigonometry and Coordinate Geometry are standard references for practice beyond NCERT

General Strategy

  • Both papers must be completed on the same day over 6 hours total. Build sustained mental stamina with full-length mock tests taken under exam conditions at least twice a week in the last three months of preparation
  • Negative marking is heavy in multiple correct MCQs (-2 for any wrong option). Never guess — attempt only when you are confident enough to rule out wrong options, not just to identify correct ones
  • In 2026, Paper 2 integer-type questions carried -1 for wrong answers. For 2027, stay updated on any pattern changes via the official brochure released by the conducting IIT
  • Solve all previous JEE Advanced papers from 2007 onwards — this builds familiarity with the exam’s distinctive style better than any coaching material alone

AAT 2026 was held on June 4, 2026 and the results have been declared on June 7, 2026 in PASS/FAIL format on jeeadv.ac.in. Candidates who passed AAT can include B.Arch programmes at these three IITs in their JoSAA choice list. Seat allocation for B.Arch is still based on the candidate’s JEE Advanced CRL rank.

Ques. How many IITs participate in JEE Advanced 2026?

Ans. All 23 IITs in India participate in JEE Advanced 2026 and JoSAA counselling. These include the six older IITs — IIT Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur, and Roorkee — as well as 17 newer IITs established from 2008 onwards, including IIT Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Patna, Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar, and others. Around 17,897 seats are available across all 23 IITs.

Ques. What is the JEE Advanced 2026 exam pattern?

Ans. JEE Advanced 2026 has two papers in computer-based mode on the same day. Paper 1 has 48 questions worth 180 marks; Paper 2 has 54 questions worth 180 marks. Both papers test Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics at 60 marks each. Question types include single correct MCQ, multiple correct MCQ, and numerical value questions. Negative marking applies to MCQs; Paper 1 numerical questions have no negative marking while Paper 2 integer-type questions carry -1 for wrong answers.

Ques. How many attempts are allowed in JEE Advanced?

Ans. You can appear for JEE Advanced a maximum of 2 times, and the 2 attempts must be in 2 consecutive years. For JEE Advanced 2026, if you also appeared in 2025, this was your second and final attempt. You must qualify JEE Main separately in the same year to be eligible for JEE Advanced — JEE Main eligibility does not carry forward from a previous year.

Ques. Is there negative marking in JEE Advanced 2026?

Ans. Yes, but the penalty depends on question type. Single correct MCQs: -1 for wrong answer. Multiple correct MCQs: -2 if any wrong option is marked (even if some correct options are also marked). Numerical value questions in Paper 1: no negative marking. Integer-type questions in Paper 2: -1 for wrong answers — this negative marking for Paper 2 integer type was introduced in 2026 and was not present in earlier years.

Ques. What is the difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced?

Ans. JEE Main is conducted by NTA and gives admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. It is also the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced. JEE Advanced is conducted by the IITs and is the only path to IIT admission. JEE Advanced has a more complex paper structure, harder questions with multi-concept problems, and a lower pass rate — about 31.6% in 2026 among those who appeared. Only the top 2,50,000 JEE Main qualifiers become eligible for JEE Advanced each year.

Ques. Who conducts JEE Advanced 2026?

Ans. JEE Advanced 2026 is conducted by IIT Roorkee on behalf of the Joint Admission Board (JAB). The conducting IIT rotates among all 23 IITs each year. IIT Roorkee was responsible for setting the question paper, conducting the exam on May 17, 2026, releasing the answer key, and declaring the result on June 1, 2026. The official website is jeeadv.ac.in.

Ques. How to register for JoSAA 2026 counselling?

Ans. JoSAA 2026 counselling registration is done on josaa.nic.in. All JEE Advanced 2026 qualifiers must register using their JEE Advanced roll number, upload documents (mark sheets, category certificate, ID proof, photo, signature), and fill their college and branch preferences. Choice filling is open until June 11, 2026. JEE Main qualifiers who did not appear for JEE Advanced can also register on JoSAA for NIT, IIIT, and GFTI seats through the same portal.

Ques. What is the JEE Advanced 2026 eligibility criteria?

Ans. To appear for JEE Advanced 2026, a candidate must: (1) rank among the top 2,50,000 in JEE Main 2026 Paper 1, (2) be born on or after October 1, 2001 for General/OBC-NCL/EWS categories or October 1, 1996 for SC/ST/PwD, (3) be appearing in Class 12 for the first time in 2025 or 2026 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, (4) not have been admitted to any IIT through JoSAA in a previous year, and (5) have at most 2 JEE Advanced attempts in 2 consecutive years. The 75% Class 12 marks criterion does not apply for JEE Advanced 2026.
