AAT 2026 Exam Pattern and Syllabus
The AAT 2026 is a single paper of 3 hours. It has around 16 questions and tests your drawing and design skills, not your Physics or Maths. The paper is offline at the IIT zonal centres.
The AAT syllabus covers five main areas:
- Freehand Drawing: Simple drawing of objects, scenes and activities from memory.
- Geometrical Drawing: Drawing of plans, elevations and 3D shapes of objects.
- Three-Dimensional Perception: Understanding of scale, proportion and building forms.
- Imagination and Aesthetic Sensitivity: Creativity, colour sense and design ideas.
- Architectural Awareness: Knowledge of famous buildings, architects and places.
The AAT 2026 is only a qualifying test. You are marked as Pass or Fail, and no marks, percentile or AAT rank is published. Once you pass the AAT, your B.Arch seat is decided strictly on your JEE Advanced 2026 All India Rank during JoSAA counselling.
You must carry your own drawing kit for the AAT. Pencils, erasers, colour pencils and geometry tools are not provided at the centre.

The fee was non-refundable and had to be paid online. The fee for exam centres outside India was higher and was charged in US dollars.
JEE Advanced 2026 Exam Pattern
The JEE Advanced 2026 exam pattern has two papers. Both Paper 1 and Paper 2 are compulsory, and you must appear in both to be considered for the rank list. Each paper is 3 hours long and is held in computer-based mode.
Both papers have three sections, one each for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The question types and the marking scheme change every year and are different in each paper. There is no fixed pattern, so you have to read the on-screen instructions carefully during the exam.
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Mode | Computer Based Test (CBT) |
| Number of Papers | 2 (Paper 1 and Paper 2, both compulsory) |
| Duration | 3 hours per paper (4 hours for PwD candidates with scribe) |
| Subjects | Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics |
| Question Types | MCQ (single correct), MCQ (multiple correct), numerical / integer type |
| Marking Scheme | Includes full, partial and negative marking (varies by section) |
| Medium | English and Hindi |
The total marks are decided by the organising institute each year and are usually around 360. Because the marking scheme keeps changing, you should focus on accuracy. A wrong answer in a single-correct question carries a negative mark, so you should avoid blind guessing.
JEE Advanced 2026 Syllabus
The JEE Advanced 2026 syllabus is based on Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics of Class 11 and Class 12. The syllabus is wider and deeper than JEE Main, and the questions test how well you apply concepts. You should be strong in basics before moving to tough problems.
Physics
The Physics syllabus covers Mechanics, Thermal Physics, Electricity and Magnetism, Optics, and Modern Physics. Topics like Rotational Motion, Electrostatics and Current Electricity carry a high weightage.
Chemistry
The Chemistry syllabus has three parts, Physical, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry. Important topics include Chemical Bonding, Coordination Compounds, Thermodynamics and General Organic Chemistry.
Mathematics
The Mathematics syllabus covers Algebra, Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, Trigonometry, Vectors and Probability. Calculus and Coordinate Geometry usually carry the most marks.
The syllabus also matches the NCERT topics for the most part, but the level of difficulty is higher. You should solve previous year papers to understand how concepts are mixed in a single question.
JEE Advanced 2026 Admit Card
The JEE Advanced 2026 admit card was released on 11 May 2026 and was available till the exam day on 17 May 2026. You could download it from the official portal by logging in with your registration number, date of birth, mobile number and email.
The admit card carried your name, roll number, photograph, exam centre details and reporting time. You had to carry a printed copy of the admit card along with a valid photo ID to the exam centre. Without the admit card, entry to the centre was not allowed.
Now that the exam is over, the admit card is mainly useful as a reference document during JoSAA counselling and document verification. So you should keep it safe along with your scorecard.
JEE Advanced 2026 Answer Key and Response Sheet
The JEE Advanced 2026 response sheet was released on 21 May 2026. It showed the answers you marked in both papers. The provisional answer key came out on 25 May 2026, and you could raise objections against it within the given window.
IIT Roorkee reviewed all the objections and then released the final answer key on 1 June 2026. The result was prepared on the basis of this final answer key. Using the response sheet and the answer key, you could calculate your expected marks even before the result.
The answer key is useful even after the result. You can use it to understand which questions you got wrong and to confirm how your final score was calculated. Both the response sheet and the answer key are available on the candidate portal.
JEE Advanced 2026 Cutoff and Qualifying Marks
The JEE Advanced 2026 cutoff has two parts. The first is the qualifying cutoff, which decides if your name enters the rank list. The second is the admission cutoff, which is the closing rank for each IIT and branch during JoSAA counselling.
To enter the rank list, you must score a minimum percentage in each subject and in total. The category-wise minimum percentages are given below. These percentages stay the same most years, while the actual marks change with the difficulty of the paper.
| Rank List | Minimum % in Each Subject | Minimum % Aggregate |
|---|---|---|
| Common Rank List (CRL) | 10.0% | 35.0% |
| GEN-EWS / OBC-NCL Rank List | 9.0% | 31.5% |
| SC / ST / PwD Rank List | 5.0% | 17.5% |
| Preparatory Course Rank List | 2.5% | 8.75% |
The admission cutoff is different for each IIT and each branch. Top branches like Computer Science at IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi close at very low ranks, often within the top 100. Newer IITs and core branches close at higher ranks, which gives more candidates a chance.
The qualifying cutoff only makes you eligible for the rank list. Your actual seat depends on the JoSAA closing ranks, which are released after each counselling round.
JEE Advanced 2026 Marks vs Rank
The JEE Advanced 2026 marks vs rank analysis helps you guess your rank from your score. The exam is out of 360 marks, and even a small change in marks can move your rank by hundreds. So scoring a few extra marks really matters at the top.
The table below shows an indicative marks vs rank range based on past year trends. The actual ranks depend on the difficulty of the 2026 paper, so use this only as a rough guide.
| Marks (Out of 360) | Expected All India Rank (Approx.) |
|---|---|
| 320 - 360 | 1 - 20 |
| 290 - 320 | 20 - 200 |
| 260 - 290 | 200 - 800 |
| 230 - 260 | 800 - 2,000 |
| 190 - 230 | 2,000 - 5,000 |
| 150 - 190 | 5,000 - 10,000 |
| 110 - 150 | 10,000 - 18,000 |
| 80 - 110 | 18,000 - 30,000 |
This year, the topper Shubham Kumar scored 330 marks for AIR 1. This shows that around 320 marks and above is enough to be in the top 20. For a seat in a top IIT, a rank under 5,000 to 6,000 is usually a safe target.
JoSAA Counselling 2026
The JoSAA counselling 2026 is the single window through which you get a seat in the IITs after JEE Advanced 2026. The registration and choice filling begins on 2 June 2026. The counselling is also common for NITs, IIITs and other government-funded institutes, but IIT seats are filled only through JEE Advanced ranks.
JoSAA 2026 manages admission to 138 institutes for the 2026-27 session. This includes 23 IITs, IISc Bengaluru, 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs and 56 other government-funded technical institutes. The whole process runs through 6 rounds of seat allotment, expected to finish by late July 2026.
The JoSAA process follows the same cycle in every round:
- Registration and Choice Filling: You register and list your preferred institutes and branches in order.
- Seat Allotment: Seats are allotted based on your rank, category and the choices you filled.
- Seat Acceptance and Fee Payment: You accept the seat and pay the seat acceptance fee.
- Document Upload and Reporting: You upload your documents for online verification.
If you qualify the AAT, you also get to add B.Arch choices during JoSAA counselling. So passing the AAT 2026 opens the architecture programmes at IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur and IIT (BHU) Varanasi.
You should fill as many genuine choices as possible in order of preference. Locking too few choices can leave you without a seat in later rounds.

- OBC-NCL: 27% of seats
- SC: 15% of seats
- ST: 7.5% of seats
- GEN-EWS: 10% of seats
- PwD: 5% horizontal reservation within each category
Female candidates also get supernumerary seats of up to 20% extra. These extra seats are added on top of the normal seats, so they do not reduce the seats available for male candidates.
JEE Advanced 2026 Toppers
The JEE Advanced 2026 toppers were announced along with the result on 1 June 2026. Shubham Kumar from the IIT Delhi zone topped the exam with 330 out of 360 marks and secured All India Rank 1. His score shows the high level of accuracy needed to top this exam.
| Rank | Candidate | Marks (Out of 360) |
|---|---|---|
| AIR 1 | Shubham Kumar | 330 |
| AIR 2 | Kabir Chhillar | 329 |
| AIR 3 | Jatin Chahar | 319 |
The top-ranked female candidate is Arohi Deshpande from the IIT Delhi zone. She secured Common Rank List position 77 with 280 marks. The strong show by the top candidates this year again proves that consistency in all three subjects is the key to a top rank.
JEE Advanced 2026 Preparation Tips
The JEE Advanced 2026 preparation needs a smart plan, not just long hours. The exam rewards clear concepts and problem-solving speed. If you are aiming for the next attempt, the tips below can help you build the right approach.
- Build Strong Basics: You should be clear with NCERT and standard concepts before solving tough problems.
- Solve Previous Papers: You should solve the last 10 years of JEE Advanced papers to understand the question style.
- Take Mock Tests: Regular mock tests in CBT mode help you manage time and reduce silly mistakes.
- Focus on Accuracy: Because of negative marking, you should avoid blind guessing and double-check your answers.
- Revise Often: You should keep short notes of formulas and revise them every week.
You should also keep a balance between speed and accuracy. The paper is long, so managing your energy across both papers is just as important as your knowledge. A calm and steady approach on exam day helps you score better.
