Ques. Can I apply to St. Stephen’s College without selecting it in the CSAS preference list?

Ans. No, admission is not possible without selecting a college in CSAS. Even if a student give CUET exam, they must still add the college to the preference list. Ans. No, interview not required for general (non-minority) students. Admission is fully based on the CUET score only for them. M.Sc Physics 174 147

Students also ask

Ques. Can I get St. Stephen’s College with a lower score on the cutoff list for later rounds?

Ans. Sometimes cutoff decreases in later rounds, but not very much in this college. Top courses like English and History mostly remain the same because seats fill fast. Some courses, like Physics or Physical Science, can drop a little. But still, students need a high CUET score; a small drop does not mean easy admission at all.

Ques. Does the cutoff depend only on marks or also on the number of students applying every year?

Ans. Cutoff depends on many things, not only marks. If more students apply and the paper is easy, the cutoff goes higher. If the paper is tough, the cutoff can go lower. Also number of seats and course demand matter a lot. That's why the cutoff changes every year, and students should not rely only on previous data.

Student view on course curriculum

Curriculum is well tailored for the proper understanding of all the concepts and topics included in it, the reference books and the additional readings are very helpful for the students, but if you look at courses like history and political science, the amount of reading required to refer to is a little too much. The curriculum properly prepares us for the next academic step, which is our post-graduation. The areas where I'd suggest improvement would be to provide simple.

Internship opportunity provided by the college

As I mentioned earlier, it is to be noted that placements are mainly for BA Economics honours and a few other BSC courses. We have a placement cell through which we can apply for internships and placements, we can upload our certificates in their online portal, and they'll let us know if we're selected. Just a few days ago, I got an internship opportunity from Eduport, an educational startup from Kerala, but I couldn't accept it as I was physically unwell.

Top company recruiting from the campus

Students become eligible for placements mostly after the 5th semester. Many companies like Deloitte, Wipro, Microsoft, etc, visit the college for placements. However, it is to be noted that placements are mostly offered to students from economics or BSc courses. My plan is to go for a master's, my aim is to become a professor.

Total course fees and provided scholarship

I paid 22,250rs for my first semester. So the annual fees would be around 44,500rs, which is pretty affordable if you compare it with that of the Sonipat colleges. St. Stephen's gives you the same quality education and much greater exposure for a fraction of the fees paid. The fees go significantly lower for PwD students, which makes the college inclusive and accessible. The detailed fee division will be given in the fee receipt. Also SC/ST students can avail scholarships provided by the government.

Annual fest and various activity in the campus

Our annual festival is named Harmony, it is an art and cultural extravaganza. The college library provides tonnes of academic resources for free as long as you're a bona fide student of the college. Every classroom is a smart class with WIFI and a projector. They're air conditioned for comfort. Stephen's is known for it's sports and extra curricular activities, making it one of the best in the university in terms of these. here are lots of societies and clubs run by the students, which opens our doors to various opportunities.
Campus
Campus

Student views on the faculty and exams

The faculty to student's ratio is pretty fair and the faculty are all very approachable. We can mail them and they'll let us know when we can meet them. Sometimes they'll come towards us and ask about our concerns. The best faculties or my favourite ones would be: Dr. Malay Neeraj (Teaches social formations for the first years) Mr. Naveen John Panicker (a guest faculty, he taught me creative writing. He's from the department of English) Dr. Sharmila Ray (another guest faculty, teaches History of USA for the first years)

Admission process and eligibility criteria

I applied to St. Xavier's college (Kolkata), Banaras Hindu University, Pondicherry University, Ferguson College (Pune), and University College (Thiruvananthapuram) alongside St Stephen's College. I got confirmed admission from all these colleges and I enrolled in St. Xavier's before St. Stephen's as there was an unforeseen delay regarding admissions due to the CUET results being delayed.

Night Life

We have two cafés and several lawns for students to hang out. Gym facility, football ground, and courts for basketball and tennis are provided for students for their overall development. The curfew in the college hostel is at 10 PM for both boys and girls. The north campus area is safe for students at night, but always beware of pickpockets.

So I had applied to all colleges in DU, St Xavier's College in Bombay and Ambedkar University Delhi. With some whip of luck I got into JMC, Miranda, Xavier's, AUD and Stephen's. Personally I never imagined I would be getting into Stephen's. The admission process in Stephens during my time had three stages. First one is the cutoff. For my partciular subject the cutoff was 97.8. Then they issue a list of candidates eligible for the interview based on the cutoff. The second stage is the interview where a panel of four or five senior members of the college will rack your brains about different spheres of the subject you have chosen. I had interviews for two subjects History and English. Since I got in English I did not attend the History interview. The final part is the documentation and paying the fees. At this stage it is more of formality except in rare cases where there is an issue with the application or the documentation part.

In science there was not much competition before I got 468 out of 600 and I got the top colleges. I keep St. Stephen's College as the first priority because it has a good alumni network. Ofcourse other college also may have. But one thing that differentiated between my college and the others is that it provides much more exposure in terms of studying and pursuing masters in abroad. And we have seniors connections who are studying in Europe with fully funded scholarships. but at the end it all depends on the student what he want to pursue.

Admission:

I had mainly applied in DU colleges as I wasn't much interested in private universities, or colleges in other states. Mine was the first batch to be recruited with the new process through CUET Exams. The novelty and uncertainity therefore influenced the conventional way of thinking about colleges and related decisions. Nevertheless Stephen's was my top choice due to its highest ranking and prestige all over India. The reputation of this college, its course, its faculty and ofcourse the colourful alumnis made me choose this college and course as my first preference. The extremely high competition for admission in this college was what made me hesitant. I had the Christian minority reservation, yet I was unsure if I could get in, Therefore I had applied to other reputed colleges in DU. I had got admission in Kamala Nehru College in South Campus in my first round, and I was satisfied because the college was also excellent. Then I had applied to Stephen's and JMC with my minority quota, and I got into both of the colleges for the desired courses. However I chose Stephen's over JMC, due to the appeal, reputation, and also the location (in the centre of DU North Campus). History Honours is one of the best and most sought after course in Stephen's with its rich faculty. The admission process had changed with the new NEP and CUET in order. Each desiired undergraduate course has its own eligibility criteria with respect to the subjects selceted in Class XII and the subjects one has to choose as papers for CUET. The details are found in the CUET Samarth website. The cutoff for History hons isnt oublicly available. Selection of Christian minority students had 85% for CUET Score and 15% weightage for interviews. Non minorities have 100% weightage from CUET. Students in history largely had CUET Scores ranging from 800-600 out of 800. The admission process was very smooth in general.

St. Stephen's was my dream college from class 12th, after my boards I full fledged devoted myself for cuet and scored extremely well because of which I am in Stephen's as the cutoff is very high in comparison to other colleges of Delhi University. I applied for a few backup colleges as well and I made my way into them as well as my scores were pretty good in cuet examination but as I got into Stephen's I really didn't bother to look for other colleges. My overall admission procedure was smooth yet straining as I had to appear for Cuet examination only after few months of my boards examination which I felt was quite beneficial as the syllabus was crystal clear hence no extra efforts were put to prepare something different for cuet as the syllabus was the same as 12th class curriculum, as I was already preparing from class 12th hence I had studied my subject in such depth that everything was afresh in my mind, I just have to brush it up. Also as cuet is objective based paper therefore remembering minute details and information is very necessary and important and from being humanities stream the examination and the examiner not only wants to check ur bookish knowledge but also the current knowledge about the country and world hence it is very important to be aware about the current knowledge as well. All these strategies helped me to make my way into what is known as one of the most prestigious institutions of the country that is St. Stephen's

What are the best subjects to study in St. Stephens, Hindu College and Hansraj College?

Arita ChaterjeeB.Com(hons) from Hansraj College, University of Delhi (2016)

The best courses offered by colleges depend on various parameters. Some of these parameters are faculty base, effective working of the department, placement opportunities provided by the institute, etc. I have a few friends from St. Stephens, Hindu College, and Hansraj College.

According to them, here are some of the courses that are quite reputed in these colleges.

  • Hansraj College - B.Com (Hons), Geology (Hons), History (Hons)
  • St. Stephen's College - Economics (Hons), History (Hons), English (Hons)
  • Hindu College - B.Com (Hons), Political Science (Hons), Economics (Hons)

Should I do BA programme from St. Stephens or English honours from JMC?

Sugandhi Roystudied at Kirori Mal College, Delhi University

I have friends from both St. Stephens and JMC. Here are a few of the information that I got from them.

  • St. Stephens is a prestigious college with its own sets of rules and code of conduct. It has a good campus. If you want to explore ideas, places and have a decent campus life then St. Stephens is a great option.
  • JMC is an off-campus college. So, you won’t have access to campus. It is a girl’s college with strict rules.

Now coming to the courses, in English honors, you will learn about a myriad of texts from different countries and different time periods. However, you will have to spend your three years around poetry and prose. You won’t get to experience much diversity when it comes to subjects. For the BA program, however, you can choose all subjects from Social Science. There are many combinations that you can opt for.

So, I will suggest that you choose the program which will keep you interested for the next three years. College life will be similar irrespective of the institute. Also, gone are the days when students with honors degrees were treated superior to the students who pursued programs.

What is the worst thing about St Stephens College Delhi University?

Gaurang Sharmastudied Masters from St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi (2017)

Getting a seat at St. Stephens College is a dream for every student but it is an impossible task. One of the worst things can be bribery and discrimination for admission to this prestigious college. Apart from this, the following can also be some more reasons:

  • The college has strict guidelines for female students and imposes a curfew after 10 PM. There is no restriction for male students and they can have as much fun.
  • St. Stephen’s favors Malayali students and the college administration easily admits them.
  • The food at the mess is neither tasty nor good. You can easily have the food from outlets outside the campus.
  • You cannot issue more than 3 books from the library and have to return them in a week. Whereas, colleges like Ramjas give 6 books for 15 days.
  • The fests at St. Stephen’s College are extremely boring and you will not enjoy them.

Regardless of these disadvantages, St. Stephen’s is incomparable in terms of academics and the crowd.

Which one is more prestigious, a B.A.L.L.B from NLSIU, Bangalore, a B.Tech from IIT or an Arts degree from St. Stephen's College, DU?

Tiyasa SainiStudied Business Economics & Psychology at University of Delhi (2019)

These are three very different fields that can not be compared with each other whatsoever. Each of them is prestigious in itself. They can not be put in an order. Still, here are some basic points worth mentioning.

  • If earning a decent amount of money is your ultimate goal, it is suggested that you go for IIT, as it will provide you with the most straightforward career path.
  • If you aspire to be in a powerful or influential position, you can opt for NLSIU. But this will require immense hard work and practical training.
  • If you want to study in a popular institution and their brand value interests you more, go for IIT.
  • If you are competent enough, you can opt for NLSIU, as it is claimed to be tougher than the IITs as well.

A more important question that you should ask yourself is “What does my interest lie in?” The way you pursue the course will decide its worth then. You should make sure that you flourish in whatever you do and build a good career out of it.

Which is better for a B.Sc (hons.) in chemistry, St. Stephens College or Hindu College? Please answer with reference to fee structures and teacher

Sayantani Barman
Ritik BoseStudied at St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi (2018)

Below given table shows a comparison between the two of the best colleges under Delhi University to pursue B. Sc (Hons.) in Chemistry.

ST. STEPHENS HINDU
NIRF RANKING #1 #3
TOTAL FEES (APPROX.) 1.2 LACS 55K
ACCREDITED NAAC ‘A’ GRADE NAAC ‘A+’ GRADE

Academics:

According to previous year, the cut off for admission to Hindu college for B. Sc (hons.) in Chemistry was 96.66% and in St. Stephen's it was 92%. The faculty contingency in both the colleges is very well reputed, dedicated and felicitated having won many recognitions to their name. It is not justified to distinguish between the teachers as all are almost at par with academic qualifications, achievements but are restricted by curriculum and different teaching patterns. Both the colleges organize national conferences and workshops for the holistic development of the students and to gain industry exposure.

Placement Opportunities:

The key feature which sets Stephen's apart is that when it comes to applying abroad for higher studies or internships or fellowship programmes, a lot of graduates have had the opportunity to do so owing to the scholarships and collaborations with foreign universities like Oxford, Yale and Cambridge. It has a more disciplined and rigorous and calm aura about itself not being as actively a part of the very famous DU fests as compared to other colleges. There are many ongoing research projects funded by SERB and UGC. Top recruiters being Hetero drugs, Emami, Homi Bhaba Centre for Science Education, BCG etc. offering a median salary of around 9LPA.

In the Hindu college, the median salary package for B. Sc in Chemistry at offer was 5LPA and average placement rate was low as most of the graduates sought to opt for higher studies. The top recruiters were DE Shaw, KPMG, IndiaBulls amongst others. Organizations like Empower India, Philip Morris International, Outlook rolled out internship opportunities too.
