St Stephen's College: 1 Answered Question

Should I do BA programme from St. Stephens or English honours from JMC?

Sugandhi Roystudied at Kirori Mal College, Delhi University

I have friends from both St. Stephens and JMC. Here are a few of the information that I got from them.

  • St. Stephens is a prestigious college with its own sets of rules and code of conduct. It has a good campus. If you want to explore ideas, places and have a decent campus life then St. Stephens is a great option.
  • JMC is an off-campus college. So, you won’t have access to campus. It is a girl’s college with strict rules.

Now coming to the courses, in English honors, you will learn about a myriad of texts from different countries and different time periods. However, you will have to spend your three years around poetry and prose. You won’t get to experience much diversity when it comes to subjects. For the BA program, however, you can choose all subjects from Social Science. There are many combinations that you can opt for.

So, I will suggest that you choose the program which will keep you interested for the next three years. College life will be similar irrespective of the institute. Also, gone are the days when students with honors degrees were treated superior to the students who pursued programs.

The fees structure of the college is completely affordable, apart from it from time to time the college provides financial assistance to the students from various departments under different national and international scholarships, Alumni scholarship to provide assistance to young talents. The fees charges are less for the PWD students but for the rest its the same and equivalent. Apart from it sumitomo scholarship , Singapore Stephanian merit cum need scholarship etc to provide assistance to students.

Fees and Financial Aid:

The fees are higher than other Delhi University colleges. It costs about Rs. 40,000 per year for day scholars and Rs. 1,20,000 per year for members in the hostel. There is no scholarship particularly for the fees but might be provided on a case by case basis. In addition to this, there are special scholarships provided by the University and college through the course of the year for students coming from economically weaker sections.

Course Curriculum Overview:

BA Program is an excellent course that gives you the fundamental knowledge of a variety of disciplines like Economics, Political Science, Philosophy, and English. The course is suitable for civil services aspirants, people appearing for other government jobs, aspiring journalists, public policy researchers and even those interested in doing an MBA in marketing or finance. Students from my batch have done internships with companies like JSW(Jindal Steel Works) and CLAWS(Centre for Land Warfare Studies) among other institutions. Students have gone on to join TFI(Teach For India), Gandhi Fellowship, YIF(Young India Fellowship), MBA at Narseemonji, Masters from Sciences Po, etc. Others have joined State Bank of India, Bombay Stock Exchange, PwC, etc.The teacher-student ratio is 1:50 for Political Science and History, 1:30 for Economics, 1:10 for English and Philosophy. Tutorials with teacher-student ratio of 1:10 are held once a week for every subject for clarification of doubts and deeper deliberation on the readings.Passing is not difficult but doing well is important.
