XLRI Jamshedpur: 11 Answered Questions

What percentile do I need to get into XLRI with poor academics (10th- 7.2 CGPA 12th- 62% graduation- 49.33%) and no work experience?

Indrani ChatterjeePGDM from Xavier School of Management (2018)

XLRI, the dream destination for many, might seem difficult to crack, especially if you haven't had a perfect academic record. But here's the exciting part – XLRI examines every aspects of applicants. They look beyond just your grades or XAT percentile. It's challenging, yes, but not impossible! Every year, numerous top students in India aspire to get into XLRI. Moreover, having work experience is a fundamental requirement for admission to XLRI.

XAT score is just one part of the XLRI admission process. To secure your admission, you need to perform exceptionally in several other stages, including:

  • You must have at least 5 years of professional experience in roles such as manager, teacher, or executive on a full-time basis.
  • Aptitude (General Knowledge, Essay, and Behavioural questions)
  • After that based on the XAT score you’ll be called for Group discussion and personal interview.

XAT cutoff is the only criteria for GD and PI calls. I would advise you to search for more business schools. If you have any other abilities or accomplishments, such as in athletics or any other extracurricular activity, you may still be able to get into XLRI despite having a poor academic score. You still have time to apply to XLRI.

What is the usual percentile range scored by the last admit in the HRM program of XLRI, Jamshedpur?

Sapna Malik
Indrani ChatterjeePGDM from Xavier School of Management (2018)

For the Human Resource Management program, the overall cut-off for male engineering applicants is 93 percentile, while it is 91 percentile for female engineering students.

Male applicants with non-engineering backgrounds must have a 90 percentile, while female applicants with non-engineering backgrounds must have an 88 percentile. It's possible that even with a high percentile, you might not be chosen if you have a poor interview performance.

While it's helpful to have some sense of scale, I'd advise shooting for the stars and ignoring percentiles for the time being.

Sanjay ShrivastavPGPM in Information Management, S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) (Graduated 2016)

What are the chances of a fresher to get selected in FMS, XLRI, MDI with less than 60% in 12th?

Sandip Pal
Abhirup ChatterjeePGDM in Human Resources, Xavier School of Management

It will be difficult to get into colleges such as FMS, XLRI, and MDI with less than 60% in 12th. But it’s achievable. FMS assigns 10% weight to 10+2 scores. So, if you manage to score around the 99.5 percentile in CAT, you will have a chance of getting shortlisted. You need to perform well in the GD-PI round as well. XLRI and MDI assign 15% weight to past academics and work experience.

So, try to work on your profile by adding extra-curricular activities. Also, prepare well for entrance tests and the GD-PI round.

What is the minimum percentile that a Non-Christian should have to get into XLRI for MBA through XAT?

Arbaz ShaikhStudied at Xavier School of Management (2010)

XLRI doesn't have any kind of religion-based cut-off nor any reservation on caste-based. As XLRI is one of the most reputed colleges in India, the percentile required for non-christian is the same as for a Christian candidate.

Cut-off depends totally on the performance you have done in your exam. Above 90% is required to appear in GD and PI and after that, you get your seat. No institute has based cut-off based on religion, castes in the world.

In the Indian education system, no one can bias on the behalf of any caste, religion, sex, it all depends on your performance and your outcome will tell your future. Don't think about anything just focus on your studies make a strategy and implement it if you want to crack your exam.

Does XLRI have different cutoffs for males and females?

Dishari BannerjeeStudied at IIM A (2018)

One of my friends is a student of XLRI. It is a very famous business school which is located in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. They offer various management programs like HR, BM, Analytics, PGDM etc.

  • They conducted their own entrance exam XAT which you will need to clear in order to get admission to this college.
  • To be eligible for admission you will have to score at least 96 percentile in the XAT exam.
  • The competition is very high. The sectional cut-off marks for males and females are different but the overall percentile cut-off is the same.

Here are the cut off marks of XLRI for 2022 -

I cleared XLRI hr cutoff and have 94.242 percentile. What are the further steps and my chances of conversion?

Shubhangi ChaudharyPGDM from Indian Institute of Management Kashipur (2018)

Last year my brother tried for conversion, so I think sharing his experience might give you a clear idea.

  • You must prepare well for general questions such as why MBA, why HR, your strengths and weaknesses.
  • GD-PI rounds at XLRI would send a set of questions to the shortlisted candidates. These must be answered carefully because the interview may be based solely on these questions.
  • Also, if you answer them correctly, you have a good chance of presenting yourself to the interviewer in a favorable light.
  • The GD process would be based on very conventional topics.
  • If you have 2+ years of experience, your interview will be based on it.
  • Prepare thoroughly, not only for the technical aspects of your job but also for the functional aspects.
  • Prepare 2–3 of your favorite or most important engineering subjects if you are an engineer (the same goes for other disciplines as well).
  • Keep up with current events and, most importantly, prepare your views on them.

Once the interview shortlists is released, the shortlisted candidates usually form a WhatsApp group to prepare for the GD-PI. Find similar groups on the education network and join them if you get a call.

The Chances of Conversion are possible if you get a call. A good XAT score certainly helps, but before, people have simply cleared the XAT cut-off and made it to the institute. Now you have to stand out among others.

Can a 96 percentile in the CAT get admitted in XLRI or any IIMs?

Sandip Pal
Rashi ShahiMBA from Xavier School of Management (2018)

For XLRI, you will have to appear in XAT. As for IIMs, the selection for admission varies depending on which category you belong to.

  • General Category Male Engineers (GEM): You are most likely to get calls from the new IIMs. It is more or less the same for GEF except for the gender diversity points.
  • General Category Non-Engineers: If you are from Arts background, expect a call from IIM A, B, C, even if you have only above 80% in 10/12/Undergrad. If you are a Commerce student you can expect a call from IIM I/K/S apart from the new IIMs.
  • OBC/NCL Category: As the sectional cutoff is lower, you can expect a call from all IIMs except ABC if you are an engineer. Female and non-engineering students will have gender/academic diversity advantages.
  • SC/ST Category: The required cutoff is fairly low for these two categories. But you will need decent past academics (at least 80%) to be eligible for top IIMs.

But these are only the minimum requirements to get a call for WAT-PI at these institutes. To be selected for admission, you will need to perform well in the WAT-PI round too as the competition will be fierce.
