NEET Topper 2026: Tie-Breaking Rules
If two or more candidates obtain the same total score out of 720, the following rules are applied in this specific order to determine the higher rank:
- Biology Marks First: The candidate with higher marks in Biology (Botany and Zoology combined) is given the higher rank. As the core subject for medical studies, Biology acts as the primary "rank decider."
- Chemistry Marks: If the Biology scores are also identical, the candidate with the higher score in Chemistry is ranked higher.
- Physics Marks: If the tie persists after checking both Biology and Chemistry, the higher score in Physics is considered.
- Overall Accuracy (Negative Marking): If all subject scores are tied, the NTA examines the candidate's precision. The person with a lower ratio of incorrect answers to total attempted questions across the entire paper will be ranked higher.
- Subject-Specific Accuracy: If a tie still remains, the NTA further drills down into accuracy for each subject in the following order:
- Lower ratio of incorrect answers in Biology.
- Lower ratio of incorrect answers in Chemistry.
- Lower ratio of incorrect answers in Physics.
- The Final Resort (Random Selection): In the extremely rare event that all the above metrics are identical, the tie is resolved through a computerised random selection process conducted under the supervision of an independent expert committee.
