New Delhi: The National Testing Agency (NTA) addressed the issue of time loss during the NEET UG 2024 on May 5, 2024. Earlier, a group of candidates raised concerns about this issue which may lead to potential disadvantages for a particular section of students.

The NTA released an official clarification stating that such candidates were awarded grace marks as per the normalization formula based on a previous judgement (Hon'ble Apex Court's judgment dated June 13, 2018). This formula was used to determine the loss of examination time and ensure that affected candidates were fairly compensated with grace marks. Consequently, the scores of such candidates reflected unusual totals like 718 or 719.

NTA NEET

According to the NEET UG 2024 marking scheme, four marks are offered for each correct answer & one mark is deducted for each wrong answer. This leads to the highest possible score of 716. But the NEET UG 2024 scorecards are showing unusual marks like 718 & 719. This issue created confusion among the candidates. The NTA’s step to offer grace marks to the candidates who were affected by the time loss issue on the examination day is one of the contributing factors to having so many toppers this year. In NEET UG 2024, a total of 67 candidates achieved all India rank 1 with a percentile of 99.997129.

What is the Debate on Social Media on NEET UG 2024 Grace Marks for “Loss of Time”?

This issue sparked controversy about the NEET UG 2024 results’ legitimacy on the social media platforms. An “X” user, Krishnendu Ghosh posted “Hope NTA explains this too… if not to normal citizens. How is this acceptable? 719/718 marks? Kaise ho skta h? Kaise ho skta h itne saare rankers same center se? Don't give bakwas explanation.”

While another user, Hardik Choudhary posted, “#NEET fraud ⚠️, How anyone can score 718 marks? It is impossible after 720 you can only score 716 marks. 718 is not possible. This is a scam. If 89 students have scored 720 marks how can he get All India Rank 69? If you have doubt, go to website and enter his roll number.”

Another response stated, “Dear NTA, This is too much, how can it be possible for a student to get 718 or 719 & why didn’t this happen before? Why is it happening for the first time? This has to be answered properly, not like this. Why are you neglecting to answer? Where is the answer for the leak?”

One NEET candidate expressed concerns on social media, “In my centre, we received the paper late by 20 minutes, hence loss of time. So we should receive such grace marks too. How do you know only they had a loss of time when under your posts, lakhs of students mentioned loss of time? Why didn’t this happier last year or years before?”
